It's Hard To Think Of The World As A Good Place
Having a child with Cerebral Palsy can be difficult. I am an extremely mild case and yet my condition put a lot of extra stress on my parents. Many children with CP are severly disabled, and are partially, if not fully dependent upon someone else to take care of their basic needs everyday. If a parent can't handle the added difficulty and responsibility of caring for a child with CP, then they need to put him/her up for adoption. That's true of parents with disabled children in general.
Stories like this make it hard for me to look at all people as intrinsically good. How can parents do this to their children? And how in the hell did no one, including CPS, bring this to the attention of law enforcement before the child died? Isn't that the entire purpose of CPS (or in this case DHS workers?)
Disgusted is the only word I can think of to describe how I feel at the moment, and that doesn't even begin to be an adequate description.

Big Brown Truck
Nevermind - Talked to Spike's and they said the bolt/extractor is functioning normally and should be good to go once I'm actually on the range with it.
Anyway, the rifle pictured is a Spike's Tactical ST-22 upper with 27 round Black Dog Machine Co. mags. The upper has a carbine length YHM rail, YHM flip-up front & GG&G flip-up rear BUIS. Spike's .22 bolt is also nickel coated which, aside from looking cool, should make cleaning easier.
I'm going to try and put a few boxes through it at the range this weekend, but we'll see if I make it. I need to stop at the hardware store 1st tomorrow so I can buy the allen wrench I need to install the rear sight.
Spikes Tactical ST-22 on DPMS lower.
What Liberal Media Bias?
Let me ask something about this whole situation. If Michelle & Barack Obama had a child that they'd adopted from Sudan can anyone honestly tell me that the media wouldn't be all over it? They would jump at the opportunity to do primetime pieces gushing with lavish praise for the selfless humanitarian acts of the Obama's. Barack would parade that kid out for the world to see as a shining example of the good "hope & change" The Messiah can bring about, and he would tell the rest of America that they need to do the same.
The McCains? They haven't used this for political capital at all. To me that shows integrity and humility, and I respect them for it. Why has the mainstream media, who LOVE sensational stories, not reported on something like this?
This can really all be summed up with one thought. Actions speak louder than words. Obama promises people the world, but McCain actually gave hope and life in a better world to an orphaned little girl in a 3rd world country. He and his wife gave her a loving family, and a better life in the greatest country in the world. What greater gift could you give a child?

Taking On An Obama Fangirl
"The way it is now, people can choose what they believe, and then exercise their free agency accordingly. Your method relies on coercion, force, or bribery, to make others fall into line with your choices.
So which one of us is the fascist now, Katie?"
A liberal a fascist? How can that be? After all Obama and his supporters propose things like "mandatory volunteering" for the "common good." I've written before about liberals and their coercive use of force, yet somehow they spin such coercion as a good thing.

Still Spewing The Same Old Crap
"The decision contradicts nearly 70 years of precedent linking that right to the amendment's reference to "a well-regulated militia."
In a sense, the decision states the obvious. Few could argue that Americans own 250 million guns so they can be ready to join a militia."
Really? The court didn't say that the right was completely unrelated to the militia. In fact, Scalia went into great detail about the right and it's connection to " a well-regulated militia." The article states,
"Few could argue that Americans own 250 million guns so they can be ready to join a militia."
Actually, the SCOTUS opinion contradicts the above claim. Scalia went into detail describing how the two phrases fit together. The Court absolutely said it was a right connected to militia service, because individual ownership was necessary to the continued existence of "a well-regulated militia." All the court said was that it was, first and foremost, and individual right, and that the right encompassed more than just the means to keep & bear arms in an unorganized civilian militia. And of course, if there's no implicit right to keep & bear arms for individual self-defense what good is a right to keep arms in defense of the State?
Also, could the press please quit the tired "Heller overturned 70 years of precedent" argument? That so called "precedent" in Miller is non-existent. The Miller ruling made no determination whatsoever as to whether the 2nd Amendment was an individual right or a "collective right" of state militias. The text of the majority decision actually supports the individual rights view, as I've touched on before, yet people continue to cling to Miller in total ignorance. Bitter clingers maybe?

Not Fun
In other news, PMC 9mm shoots fine but smells terrible, and Winchester Wildcat .22lr is dirty, smoky as hell, and still occasionally chokes up my Bersa. Thankfully I think I only have a box or two of the stuff left.
My target? meh, it looked a lot like it did the last time I went shooting, which is a bit disappointing. I'm also happy to report that the P228 ran perfectly fine this time out.
Also, out of sheer curiosity I fired off a .22lr round without hearing protection. I won't be doing that again. I've heard people say you don't need ears when shooting a .22 They must be crazy.

Sister Is Asking About Self-Defense Tools
I'm thinking I may need to bring him to the range and see how it goes. I know if I were living near Philly I'd want to carry, but then again I'm a gun nut...
I looked up PA knife laws and didn't see any blade length limitations like we have here in Delaware. Are there any weird, obscure knife laws to be aware of? Is Philly OK? (It's funny I ask that, because I've carried my benchmade in Philly before and thought nothing of it till I got home.)
I'm also thinking I need to stress that my sister have something when she go to visit, even if it's just some Fox Labs pepper spray. She's about Breda's size, and quite frankly I worry. I am her older brother, so I guess it's my job to worry.
UPDATE - Looks like Sebastian has already covered PA knife laws, and I commented on his post. It also seems a pocketknife is illegal to carry in Philly. I'm sorry but that's goddamn ridiculous.
Getting Called Into The Bosses Office....
Apparently it was time for performance evals and I got rave reviews. Who knew? It also applies retroactively to the entire month of July.
Funny thing is, she told me I scored a 4.64 / 5 which is apparently really good, but now I'm wondering what I've done wrong to not have scored higher.

The Race Issue
I fail to see how giving someone a leg up based solely on their skin color is any less racist than denying them opportunities based on that same criteria. Those deserving of help are deserving of help. Period. Why the hell should race matter?

Another Armed Civilian Thwarts Terrorists
"A pedestrian recorded a video of the violence using his cellphone. The short movie shows the construction vehicle approaching him before a civilian runs up to the driver and begins shooting. The vehicle's shovel then falls to the ground and a policeman arrives, shooting the driver again."
Once again, an armed civilian saves lives, and arrives on the scene before the police.

5.45 S&W AR-15
1. Will it be reliable with steel-cased ammo? Wolf, Barnaul, and corrosive milsurp are the only 5.45x39 ammo sources I can think of and I doubt anyone's going to come out with 5.45 brass-cased ammo. That would likely eliminate a great deal of the cost savings over 5.56 anyway.
2. Corrosive Ammo? - I really wouldn't want to run corrosive milsurp 5.45 through the AR's gas system. I imagine cleaning would be a real bitch.
3.Will S&W sell just the 5.45 follower or will you have to buy expensive mags?
This seems very promising if it's reliable with steel-cased ammo and is priced right. I'm surprised I just heard about it now, since they apparently released the info back in March. If it works well this would pay for itself within a few thousand rounds, although if it's popular it'll likely drive the price of 5.45 up immediately.

This Has To Be A Joke........Right?
Here's the money quote. You'll understand once you click on the link.
"The rising cost of food means their money gets them about a third fewer bags of groceries — $100 used to buy about 12 bags of groceries, but now it's more like seven or eight. So they cut back on expensive items like meat, and they don't buy extras like ice cream anymore."
Somehow I don't think they should be buying any "extras" nor much meat. Beans, rice and water are cheap. Poor children in Africa are starving, but these poor heffers can't afford ice cream anymore. How will they ever survive?
"Nunez, 40, has never worked and has no high school degree.....she and her daughter, Angelica Hernandez, survive on a $637 Social Security check and $102 in food stamps."
40 years old, she's NEVER WORKED and she has the audacity to bitch about her inability to make ends meet? "I just can't get a job" is BULLSHIT. If she's that age and has never worked it's because she's a lazy lard-ass who'd rather live off of the government. Her 19 year old daughter is no better. I understand some people are naturally big, but DAMN! Can't afford gas and a car? (I saw no mention of car insurance.....how typical.) Can't walk to work? Ever heard of a bicycle? There's got to be a bus stop somewhere nearby.
Holy shit! Check out the graphic discussing their budget. They pay only $100/month in rent because it's subsidized housing! What the hell!? None of them earn any income, yet they still have spending money at the end of each month......and they're complaining?
I can't even comment anymore. This just pisses me off. Was this article supposed to evoke sympathy? Well it didn't. I must be a heartless asshole.

Fight For Your Right To Be Taxed!
Apparently Deval Patrick is having a hissy-fit at the thought of doing away with the State's 5.3% sales tax, calling elimination of the tax a "potential disaster." Yeah, it's a potential disaster alright, for the big-government liberals of Massachusettes.
It gets better though,
"Patrick, holding a public meeting of his cabinet at the Bangs Community Center in Amherst, listened as Northampton Mayor Mary Clare Higgins called for the public to rally against a ballot question that would eliminate the state’s 5.3 percent income tax."
The Mayor wants Massachusettes residents to rally against the elimination of a direct tax on them? How dumb do these politicians think their constitutents are? What citizen is going to enthusiastically support taxation that applies to everyone in the state. Even far left folks only support taxes for "the other people" meaning all the "evil rich capitalists."
Jesus, it's like Mass. politicians are running around screaming "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" at the idea of actually lowering taxes. It will "cripple the budget" and there will be "no schools, roads, or public safety." They even put this disaster of insane proportion on the level of Sudan, saying that country has no taxes. Well yeah, Sudan doesn't have much of anything, no government, no taxes, no food, water or security, but lots of starvation, disease, and genocide. I'm sure if they just had taxes everything would be blissfully wonderful for the Sudanese.
Where do they find such imbeciles? And how in the hell do they get elected?
By the way..... DELAWARE has no sales tax! (THE HORROR! I know...) We seem to be doing just fine down here. Someone should let these idiots know about little old Delaware.

Anyone care to explain how this happens?
Gas Guzzlers
Nope. I managed a grand total of 18.5 MPG my last fill up. When I tone down my driving I can get maybe 20/gal, but I've also gotten as low as 15/16 MPG.
In 20K miles my brakes & front tires are both almost shot, but that's because these are the roads I drive for my daily commute. I have some awesome pictures at home, so these crappy ones will have to do for now. God it's fun!

A Happy 5th Birthday
In explaining the mutual devotion they both share Brigid says,
"But dogs are more than animals. They teach us about unbridled living in the moment and following your heart. They teach us to appreciate the simple things..... in the last five years, he has also pointed me to the things that matter in life. Loyalty, devotion; and love without judgment or strings attached."
I couldn't agree more. A dog is the greatest companion a person could ever ask for. They have an uncanny ability to bring out the best in their owners. I love my Zack and don't know what I'd do without him. And yes, I do talk to him sometimes.

Not A Good Way To Start Off A New Shooter
Anyway, she brought home some brass and her target as souvenirs and I had the target on my bedroom door for a few years. That target has been gone for years now, and I'd misplaced the brass until just recently. Here's what I found. A +P+ .38 casing. No wonder it wasn't a particularly pleasant experience.
Mom doesn't know much about what she shot (I've asked) although I do know she shot a DA revolver and that "the trigger was really hard to pull." She also shot an AK-47 and an unknown rifle. We actually have pictures of this somewhere. In one shot you can see her shooting the rifle during recoil with the gun having actually jumped out of her hands. Clearly whatever they had her shoot was not a .22

More on Pfc. Dwyer and Delaware Liberal
Members of the U.S. military, past and present, are men (and women) who sacrifice and put their lives on the line while the rest of us enjoy our freedoms and live safe, content lives. These men volunteered to serve their country. I think their actions speak quite loudly and it is our duty as Americans to treat them with respect when they return home. Hate Bush, hate the war, but DO NOT hate the men and women who provide your security. They cannot choose the manner and circumstances of the conflict in which they're serving. They serve, they try their best to do what's right, look out for the men next to them, and make it home alive.
What right do you have to speak ill of a man who served his country with honor and genuinely did what he could to help the Iraqi people? You have NO RIGHT to call him a "pussy" for being unable to deal with the horrors of war. Pfc. Dwyer was a medic. In that capacity he likely saw some of the worst that war has to offer. No one comes away emotionally and mentally unscathed from on the ground combat in a war zone. You say Dwyer should have just sucked it up and dealt with it. Ok, tell that to rape and abuse victims you despicable piece of shit. There are things that the human psyche has trouble coping with and everyone reacts differently. Unless you were in his shoes and saw what he saw you can't possibly know what inner demons he was dealing with.
I know someone who recently came back from Iraq. He was a medic. When he came back I thanked him for his service and told him I was glad he made it back OK. It wasn't my place to ask much else, since I'm not in a position to understand what he saw while there.
My grandfather served several tours in WWII as an infantry soldier in both Europe and the Pacific. My grandma said he had night terrors for years. Was my grandpa a "pussy" because he carried emotional baggage from seeing the men he served with die right beside him day after day? My grandmother grew up in Germany during WWII. She saw and experienced things that no American could ever know and her father was killed in the war. Should she just suck it up and pretend those things never happened? Of course not. Such things leave scars that sometimes our young men and women can't deal with. The least we can do is show some support and respect for those who have gone through hell and back. We owe them that much.
Building the Ammo Stash

The ABC's of Me
The ABCs of Me
Accent: I don't think there's a "hockessin" accent or a northern Delaware accent, so I guess I'm accentless.
Breakfast or no breakfast: Breakfast is almost always a bowl of Life cereal, a glass of milk, and if I have it a glass of no pulp OJ. When I was younger I skipped breakfast a lot or just ate microwaved brown sugar cinnamon pop tarts.
Chore I don’t care for: Umm all of them? I thought the word "chore" automatically implied having to do something I don't care for.
Dog or Cat: Dog. I'm allergic to cats and they're not much fun. Neither are small dogs. Dogs really are man's best friend, except when they let off deadly, silent farts and then leave the room.
Essential Electronics: Computer - I don't know what I'd do without the internet. And my watch. I really don't like not knowing what time it is.
Favorite Cologne: Abercrombie Fierce. The ladies seem to like it so that's what I wear.
Gold or Silver: Gold
Handbag I carry most often: It's called a wallet. Seriously. How much could you possibly need to carry around with you on a daily basis?
Insomnia: Yup, I have that. I think it's a holdover from college
Job Title: Law Clerk - Otherwise known as "office lackey" or "paper pusher"
Kids: I'd require a woman for those, preferably one who's not an emotional nutcase. (God - are you listening?) Oh and really I'd love em' if they'd just pop out fully potty-trained. Baby shit is vile stuff.
Living Arrangements: Suck - my dad = emotional nutcase of the male variety. Drama, Drama, Drama. And he's an anti-gunner. I'm outta here as soon as I can find a more solid job.
Naughtiest Childhood Behavior: Always bugging my sister. She cried easily and I found that quite amusing. In so many pictures she's crying and I'm laughing.
Most Admirable Trait: I don't know, you tell me. I suppose I'm a nice person, at least that's what most people say.Overnight hospital stays: Several. I took em in stride, even when the morphine spinal tap ran out or I couldn't stop puking my guts out. At least people are trying to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Oh and occasionally you'll get a hot nurse too, which is nice.
Phobias: Heights. Oh, and ending up alone later in life.
Quote: "Reason obeys itself; Ignorance submits to what is dictated to it." - Thomas Paine
Reason to smile: Beauty. There are so many beautiful things in the world and so many beautiful people. Stupidity too. Stupid people are funny and they make me smile.
Siblings: 4. half brother, half sister, and two younger sisters. We may not always get along, but they're all pretty cool people.
Time I wake up: 7AM on weekdays. Usually around 9 on weekends. I slept in this weekend though.
Unusual Talent or Skill: I can crack my knuckles just by making a fist. I've never seen anyone else do it and it freaks people out.
Vegetable I Refuse to Eat: Cauliflower. That stuff is gross. Oh, and beets too.
Worst Habit: Procrastination / lack of motivation / fucking shit up. (It's usually some combination of those three)
X-rays: Right foot and ankle several times, both legs, face - both before and after my jaw surgery.
Yummy Stuff: Kate Beckinsale, Scarlett Johannson....mmm. Did you mean food? Pasta, and homemade rice pudding for dessert.

Happy Independence Day QQTD
- Judge Learned Hand

Never forget what our founders fought and died for. They gave up lives of affluence to fight for what they believed in, no matter the costs. As John Stuart Mill once said,
“A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”
These men were better men. They were patriots, men of principle and action, (no matter what liberal professors say about them) and we owe them an enduring debt of gratitude. May we never forget what they sacrificed for us and for future generations of Americans.

A Thought on EBR's
In Heller the majority wrote,
"The District’s total ban on handgun possession in the home amounts to a prohibition on an entire class of “arms” that Americans overwhelmingly choose for the lawful purpose of self-defense. Under any of the standards of scrutiny the Court has applied to enumerated constitutional rights, this prohibition—in the place where the importance of the lawful defense of self, family, and property is most acute—would fail constitutional muster."
Aren't "assault weapons" an entire class of "arms" under the 2nd Amendment, even if the term "assault weapon" is a legislative creation with no set definition?
More important is the following passage from the Heller majority,
"The traditional militia was formed from a pool of men bringing arms “in common use at the time” for lawful purposes like self-defense. “In the colonial and revolutionary war era, [small-arms] weapons used by militiamen and weapons used in defense of person and home were one and the same.” We therefore read Miller to say only that the Second Amendment does not protect those weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes.
The Court is clearly saying that weapons "in common use" (particularly those used for individual/home defense) constitute protected arms under the 2nd Amendment. Later in the opinion the Court says that the prohibition of "dangerous and unusual" weapons would be permissible, however this statement comes in the context of their discussion of weapons "in common use" as being protected. I've heard some say that AWB's may pass Constitutional muster because such weapons are "dangerous and unusual" but I fail to see how a weapon can be both "unusual" and "in common use" simultaneously.
So the most pertinent questions are,
1. Are the "arms" banned under a Federal AWB currently "in common use" among the civilian population?
2. Are they commonly used for self-defense and defense of the home?
Assault Weapons bans are so expansive and encompass so many different types of weapons I think it's difficult to determine whether each banned weapon listed is "in common use." The AR-15 however, is banned under every AWB I've ever seen. It's a difficult sell to say that AR's are "unusual" or not "in common use." For one, almost every police agency issues AR's to their patrol officers. They're also commonly used by civilians participating in CMP training (as is the M1 Garand which is also often considered a banned "assault weapon." CMP directly impacts the training and arming of "the militia." I would hope this point might resonate with the dissenters in Heller, although I'm not sure any logic would resonate with Stevens or Breyer given the audacity of their dissenting opinions. They seemed to have their minds made up irrespective of logic and facts and were running in logical circles in a vain attempt to justify their personal prejudices.
In addition, Joe Poyer, author of "The M16/AR-15 Rifles - A Shooter's And Collector's Guide" had this to say about the AR-15 platform.
"The AR15 rifle, has been manufactured in the hundreds of thousands by more than a dozen different companies. It is the current National Match Service Rifle and the most popular target match rifle in use today."
I think that in the event we see pro-gun advocates challenge the constitutionality of either federal or state/local level AWB's, the popularity and widespread civilian use of the AR-15 could be the key to striking down laws banning such weapons. Also, although I don't have a quotable source handy I'm fairly sure AR's are extremely popular for home-defense as well. The AR-15 has obvious self-defense and militia applications. I believe that like handgun bans, AWB's banning AR's would be unconstitutional under the reasoning set forth in Heller. I hope to be proven right in the near future.

Dirty Stuff
It could be worse though, I could be shooting lacquer coated Wolf. Why do people buy Wolf pistol ammo when you can get Blazer Aluminum for virtually the same price?
Constitutionality of Federal Gun-Free School Zone Act
The current law can be found here and here is the pertinent part of the law from the Delaware AG's website.
Under current law you cannot carry in a "school zone" (within 1000ft. of a school) unless you have a CCW permit issued from the state in which the school resides. Open carrying? You'll have to stay out of "school zones" at all times or risk becoming a felon unless you also have that state's CCW permit. Carrying concealed in PA on a Utah CCW? watch out for school zones.
Just how are you supposed to know whether you're within 1000 ft. of a school, especially if carrying in an unfamiliar area? (I.E. out of state) Even in Newark, I'm not 100% sure where the 1000ft. radius around Newark High School extends to. Also, the law contains the phrase,
"that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone"
This means you'd be better off not ever reading the law in question nor acquiring knowledge of where the schools are in the area(s) in which you will be carrying. Ignorance is innocence.
Someone I know may have at times thrown his/her guns in an unlocked range bag to go shooting at Ommelanden and driven right past William Penn High School, thus passing through a prohibited "gun-free school zone."
In light of Heller I think this law could end up being challenged at some point down the line and ruled unconstitutional.

A Must Read Post on Obama and Fascism
Liberals like to call Bush "evil" but he's never had the unwavering adoration of anyone. Obama does, and that, combined with his socialist policies and naivety is a recipe for potential disaster. Things can change for the worse in an instant, and people ripe for a mass movement don't always get the "change" they were hoping for...... or maybe they do? Maybe they deserve to get it good and hard.
Just read the linked post. My commentary is pretty much unnecessary, since Armed & Dangerous says it far better than I could hope to.
h/t to Rusty for the link
FBI Director Mueller's Remarks on Heller
Here's yet another government agent, who assuredly has an armed security detail, effectively telling us peasants that "guns r' bad m'kay?"
Campus safety could be jeopardized? How so exactly? Almost all of them are "gun free zones" anyway, and that particular campus safety policy has clearly been a smashing success in recent years.
Also, the article is wrong on a few points. Heller did not uphold the Constitutionality of licensing. It simply didn't address that issue because D.C.'s licensing law wasn't challenged by Mr. Heller.
Mueller, a former marine in Vietnam, says,
"I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."
Oh really!? I suppose Mueller will be calling for all FBI agents to turn in their weapons since they're more likely to cause harm to their carriers? I suppose he'd have preferred to be unarmed during his service in Vietnam?
Mueller hopes college campuses will be gun-free. Come on Director Mueller, jump on Obamarama's "Hope & Change" bandwagon and travel to a wonderful world where all you have to do is "hope" for something and it will be so. I suppose Obama and the President don't need bodyguards anymore either. They can just hope that no one will hurt them. In fact, all anyone needs is a little more "hope," a little more "change" and maybe some unwavering faith in "The Messiah" and the world can be a better place for us all.
