Quote of The Day - Obama Edition

"America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. "

-President Barack H. Obama - Inaugural Address - Jan 20, 2009

This is a wonderful passage from his speech, and I agree with it wholeheartedly. That said, nothing he's said or done in the past gives me any confidence whatsoever that he'll remain faithful to our founding documents.

This is a man who doesn't consider the 2nd Amendment an individual right and who clearly abhors the very notion that we all have a natural right to self defense. This is a man, a Constitutional Law professor, who claims the Constitution "grants" rights. (see Tam's take on that bit) He's not much better on the 1st Amendment, where he tried to shut down his political dissent. His actions on that front clearly conflict with the ideals of our founding fathers.

As it stands I've seen little to nothing that leads me to believe President Obama has even read our founding documents, much less that he understands them. So, while I agree with the sentiment espoused by his quote I'll remain pessimistic about the prospect of this country reverting back to the ideals of our founders. Rather I believe we'll move full speed ahead towards Euro style socialism (at a faster pace than we have the past 8 years, under so-called "conservatives")

I sincerely hope that I'm wrong.

Of course not. He has no respect for the Second Amendment, so I don't understand why anyone would think he'd really have any respect for the rest of the Bill of Rights, or the Constitution, for that matter.

Since you are such a defender of the Bill of Rights do you not also care the George Bush did away with the 5th amendment of due process for those people in Gitmo? In fact, the fifth, sixth and seven amendments (3 of the 10) were all voided by good old Georgey.

I find that foreseeing the end of days makes you come off as a negative ninny... and a hyperbolic one at that. If Obama ever does do something rash then I will happily say uncle. However, the chances of it are very slim. So I like my odds.

Hear, hear. Obama has already carried over his desires to abridge, infringe, and restrict the Second Amendment from his campaign website, to his President-Elect website, and now to his Presidential website. To try to pass that off as a non-priority is farsical, at best.

What is amusing is that quote directly falls in line with my new mantra: "The President is not America, and America is not the President." I wonder how many "new" citizens in America (i.e. those people who were always citizens, but somehow consider themselves to be more citizens now) actually would agree with that...

J-Chrome - Typical argument. I never said GWB was a great defender of the Constitution, only that our "great leader" Barack Hussein Obama is just as bad if not worse.

"If Obama ever does do something rash then I will happily say uncle. "

Like say, threatening to pull broadcast licenses of broadcasters who play political ads he doesn't like? Or claiming that DC has a "Right" to keep it's handgun ban? Or perhaps his insistence that the 2nd Amendment is not an individual right?

Should I go on?

I'm guessing you also believe that since Obama is the president now the streets will be filled with unicorns pissing rainbows and shitting newborn black lab puppies. More than a few of us on the right do indeed not see W. as an ardent defender of the Constitution. What is it with you lefties and that particular straw man anyway?

Yeah it's as if those on the left can't discuss Obama on his merits (or lack thereof) alone. Instead they have to deflect from the issue being discussed and instead say. "But....BUSH IS TEH EVIL!!"

We're discussing Obama here Chrome. If you wan't to bring GWB into it that's fine with me, but you'll need to work him into a logical argument.

Good point. Truth stands the test of time.

I saw a video recently about the British trying to get thier gun rights back and it really ticked me off. I created an online petition for it if you are interested in signing it too. It affirms our second amendment rights and will be delivered to Congress once it reaches 3.1 million signatures. I believe we may not be represented well enough under the new administration and this is a great way to communicate your opinion to our goverment. If you get a chance, could you sign it or pass it around?

Everything that he's said and done in the past gives me confidence that he's a complete con-artist, and will not remain faithful to our founding documents but will make every effort to damage our constitution besides.
