and I'm scared too.
I thought things were bad enough when I was a kid and mom wouldn't let me buy a BB gun. It's disturbing how bad things are these days. Don't coddle your kids, and don't let the State do it for you.
Also, if there's one hard and fast truth of being a kid it's this. Kids will find a way of doing ridiculously stupid, dangerous, and totally awesome things for fun. Teach them right from wrong, help them when they need it, and let em' live life. If your kids aren't finding potentially hazardous things to do outside then they aren't being kids.
