"My take on this situation is quite simple: I support carry. If you want to openly carry, knock yourself out. If you want to concealed carry, have at it. If you want to wear a yarmukle, break out the bobby pins. If you want a rosary about your neck, that certainly makes it easy to get to."
- Linoge
That's basically my take on open carry as well. I take it as a pro-choice issue. Carry however the hell you want. I do subscribe to the "don't be an asshole" line of thinking, but that applies to most things (CCW too) not just open carry

Chile Earthquake
I spoke to my grandpa earlier this afternoon. He has been unable to get in touch with anyone via phone. We sent out a few e-mails but have yet to hear back. I hope my relatives in Santiago are all safe.

Gettin' Sworda Crazy Out There!
Saysuncle has the latest sword violence.
Something must be done to protect our nations children from this terrible threat! After all, swords are inherently dangerous & violent and we can't have crazy parents getting drunk and running through their kids schools while carrying them.
Would you want someone next to you in the pew, working in your kid's school or next to you eating wings at the local sports bar while carrying a sword? Don't you have a right to know who around you might be concealing a sword underneath their raincoat?
Please! Think of the children. Donate now and help us keep your streets sword-free!
Sincerely,
Joe Blow - The Blow Campaign to Prevent Sword Violence

Quote of the Day - Character
I delete comments from people who are shitheads and mike w. is one of those.
-Democommie
The character of anti-gunners, specifically anti-gun bloggers generally leaves much to be desired. Democommie is no exception. I consider it a compliment to be given such praise by these kinds of people. It means that I'm on the correct side of the issue and am doing something right.
Bob S. discusses some of the stupid here. I won't unless this guy says something particularly noteworthy that warrants further discussion, which I think is unlikely.

Apparently I am Human
This week marks the 1st time in roughly 2 years & 7 months that I've called out sick from work.
Wow, that means I haven't been sick enough to miss work since before I started this blog.
*Well, aside from one Friday in Summer 07' where I missed half the day due to drunkeness.
I hope this means it'll be another 2+ years before I get sick again.

Starbucks Appreciation Day
Starbucks Appreciation Day is Sunday February 21st. If you're a coffee fan go support Starbucks for their decision not to cave to anti-gun pressure and engage in discrimination. Personally I don't like anything at Starbucks, though I'd drink Brew-Haha lattes daily if I could afford it.
I'm going to make a suggestion for those of you planning to hit up Starbucks on the 21st, and it falls in line with what Breda said here. Don't bother the baristas. Their job is hard enough, they have to get up early and deal with people all day long. Most of them don't really want to chat with you about gun rights, politics, your kids projectile vomit, or what you had for lunch. I'm not saying we shouldn't engage people, only that sometimes best course of action is more targeted activism.
I've worked at jobs where I had to serve customers all day, and while at times I didn't necessarily mind chit-chat and small talk I can't say I enjoyed it either. The last thing I wanted to do when things were busy and we had a line halfway through the parking lot was have a superfluous discussion with a customer. I want to get everyone served so I can have a bit of downtime before the next rush where I'll have to run around a mile a minute again. It's a slightly different situation if the place is dead, but even then I have things to get done that I couldn't do while there was a rush of customers.
Furthermore, the barista really has no relation to Starbucks Corporate. Unless said barista is a fellow gunnie it's more than likely they're going to be unaware of Starbucks decision to allow people open carrying guns to patronize their establishments. There's really not much benefit to bringing this up directly with your barista, although if you annoy them enough you're likely to get subpar service.
Obviously I'm not saying you shouldn't mention it to the baristas. That's entirely up to you if you choose to do so, but I really think we should focus our praise towards the right people. Ask for the store manager and tell him why you've decided to give him your business. Write to Starbucks Corporate or e-mail them. Those are the folks who told the Brady Campaign to stuff it and they're the ones we need to be sure and thank.
UPDATE - Read Stingray's take here. Hilarious and yet there's quite a bit of truth to it.

9BPLE
Cheaper Than Dirt has Federal 9BPLE for sale. $19.58 per box. I really like this load and have several hundred rounds of it on hand for my P6's. It's good, has a long, impressive real-world track record and is relatively inexpensive compared to most 9mm defensive loads.
That said, I used to buy it for ~$13.50 per box.

Dissent is Only Patriotic....
....when Liberals are out of power. Funny, during 8 years of Bush it was "Dissent is Patriotic." Now that Liberals control the White House and Congress that has changed to "Dissent Aids Terrorism"
"Politically motivated criticism and unfounded fear-mongering only serve the goals of al-Qaeda."
-John Brennan - Deputy National Security Advisor
Funny, during the campaign any criticism of Obama was deemed "racist," Now that he's President he can pull the "terrorism card" and keep the well-worn race card in his hip pocket as backup. I'm guessing Brennan's statement only applies to politically motivated criticism levied at the Obama Administration, but not criticism and fearmongering promulgated by the administration itself.
In other news, since when does Sarah Palin writing notes on her hand qualify as news? Obama reads from a fucking teleprompter, yet somehow CNN devotes an entire segment to Palin's hand notes.

Leftist Speak
1st Amendment - Right you enjoy as an individual, but lose when you group together with other individuals to form a Corporation.
2nd Amendment - Right you enjoy only when you join a collective group of citizens, which magically disappears when members of said group act as individuals.
Hint to leftists - Your logic does not compute. A corporation is merely a group of individuals formed to further a mutual interest. Much like a militia, it doesn't magically appear out of thin air and cannot exist without individuals.

I'm the only one still out of the loop
It seems as though everyone in the gun blogging world watches Firefly, even Jay I've also had non-gunnie friends tell me how awesome it is. I haven't seen a single episode of the series nor have I seen the movie.
I guess I'll see if there's online episodes somewhere to watch before I plunk down any cash.

Snow!
We got absolutely hammered here in Northern Delaware. We've got somewhere near 30 inches here, definitely over 2 feet already. The snow seems to have stopped falling for right now, so I'm hoping this means it's over.
Here's the accumulation on the outside table as of 8:30 AM this morning. We have significantly more than this now.

I've got about 2/3 of the driveway done and am hoping to be finished by later tonight. My dad shouldn't shovel at all with his heart condition, but he's stubborn and refuses to listen to me. It's amazing how much harder this is when you don't have 4 or 5 people shoveling with you.
So for now I'm stuck here, snowed in and enjoying some beer and movies. Why is it that we've gotten most of this crappy white stuff on weekends? It seems as if every time I'm free to go to the range we get snow.

Hardware Solution to a Software Problem
In Britain, the Government has developed a shatterproof pub glass. Why? They want to lower healthcare costs by creating a pint glass that can't be broken and used as a weapon.
"There are about 87,000 alcohol-related glass attacks each year, with many resulting in hospital visits, Home Secretary Alan Johnson said."
Think about that for a second. Violent attacks with glassware are enough of an issue that they have to ban glass and come up with a shatterproof alternative. They banned glass pints because drinkers were breaking them and assaulting one another with them. Also, given what we know of the UK that 87,000 figure is most likely vastly understated.
Hmmm, that sounds like a country with a serious cultural problem, one where wanton, predatory violence is a culturally acceptable norm. Here in America we can carry guns & knives into bars and yet we don't see that kind of violence. Hell, I carry a knife virtually everywhere and have often carried a Sig into bars.
Any society that adopts predatory violence as an acceptable behavioral norm while criminalizing protective violence is one that is destined for failure. We see it in the UK and we see it in inner city America. Once that cultural shift has occurred everyone who accepts and acts upon that new behavioral norm is dangerous. When predatory violence is the acceptable, even preferred means of interpersonal interaction no amount of hardware fixes are going to revive the fatally damaged software.
It's the culture stupid! (and it's not the drinking) The Brits have identified the wrong problem and they keep throwing bandaids on it while ignoring the puss-filled, festering wound that's staring them in the face.
Britain gets more and more insane daily. I wouldn't even mention it, except that the Liberals in this country espouse the same viewpoints and the same "solutions" while failing to acknowledge the failure of those solutions across the pond.
Via Bruce, who describes the problem as,
"the runaway nanny state culture of a government that treats its subjects like children incapable of making their own behavioral choices, and then feigns surprise when they act as, well, children incapable of making their own behavioral choices."
Those in power act like idiotic children. Why should they expect their subjects to act any more responsibly?

Another Ban Goes Down in DE
The Caesar Rodney Institute blog has the news
The housing authority for the city of Newark has withdrawn its gun ban. Now we've just got to get the housing authorities in Wilmington, Dover & the DSHA to withdrawal their bans as well. If they have any sense they'll fold in short order just like Newark.
I don't have time to write much on this at the moment, so more thoughts later. I will say that if we really want to send a message and get this kind of behavior to stop we need to start prosecuting the officials who are implementing and enforcing these unconstitutional bans.
Of course there'll be snowflakes in hell before that happens. Sebastian points out that all it takes to topple these housing gun bans is a letter threatening legal action. It works because post-Heller the bigots know they will lose in court.
