Don't Piss Us Off

NSSF is reporting that the Obama administration, through the EPA, is seeking to ban lead ammunition. Is Obama really this goddamn stupid? Why would you do something guaranteed to piss off virtually every gun owner in the country just a few months before the elections? We may be somewhat marginalized in a few states, but gun owners are a large contingent in most of the country. It's not wise to piss us off right before election time, especially in an election where Democrats are likely to see heavy losses.

It seems to me that many of Obama's policies are a result of both sheer incompetence and malice. He's an elitist, arrogant academic who's far out of touch with most of America. I think that accounts, at least in part, for the systemic incompetence we're seeing from his administration.

Let's face it, a ban on lead ammo would cripple the firearms industry and the shooting sports. If Obama thinks that millions of gun owners are going to stand for that he is sorely mistaken. The Administration, and Democrats in general are already facing a huge backlash, which makes this tone-deaf proposal all the more puzzling. I suspect many Dems are cursing the Administration under their breath and will immediately try to distance themselves from Obama. Republicans should seize on this and use it as extra ammo in campaign ads from now till November.

To give you an idea of just what banning lead would do to ammo prices, let's take a look at Ammoman. Lead-Free frangible 9mm is almost twice the price of traditional lead FMJ 9mm. The increase would be worse for those not buying in bulk. Could you afford to shoot if ammo prices doubled or tripled overnight and stayed there? If 9mm range ammo ran $25 per box or more or a case of lead free .40 S&W cost $600 or $700. Is there any defensive ammo that doesn't contain lead?

Guns chambered in oddball calibers or old military calibers would become worthless wall ornaments. How many ammo companies would tool up to produce lead-free ammo in 8mm Steyr, 7.5 French, or 6.5 Arisaka?

I wish I could say that Obama couldn't possibly be stupid enough to even consider this, but at this point further asshattery from his administration seems like a foregone conclusion. Obama has managed to turn virtually every situation into a boondoggle. He makes me pine for George Bush, who was a big government statist and an embarrassment. Hell, Bill Clinton looks shockingly competent, moderate, even honest by comparison.

Some folks would do well to remember that their are millions of rounds of lead ammo in civilian hands at the moment. There's only one way it's getting turned in, and I don't think anyone wants to see that. Molon Labe. Oh, and what Tam said.

H/T to Sebastian

And of course there's a reason why we make our ammo out of lead. Not only is it cheap (Tho there's lots of mild-steel core ammo out there because steel can be cheaper still) but it is both soft and heavy, making it very good at conserving energy in flight, but also at expanding in terminal ballistics. Gold would work well too, but it wouldn't be affordable.

I have some copper FMJ .357 Magnum cartridges, they're nice because I don't have to worry about the jacket separating on impact, but meanwhile the bullets are VERY light because of the size and mass constraints.

Of course we all know next up will be an "Armor Piercing Ban" where they will ban steel and solid copper or brass ammo. Then you can have as many guns as you want, but loading them with anything but blanks will be a crime.

We'll kill them all before that happens.
