So much of what is wrong with American society is a result of peoples need to deny others freedom based upon a lack of trust in their own behavior, character, and convictions. Though many will steadfastly deny it, they do not trust themselves with freedom, so they seek to deny it to others.

I would modify that quote to say "False morality.." since most of the lefties want to be able to do anything they choose, it is just the great unwashed masses that must be controlled.
A moral person expects no more from anyone else than they expect from themselves and do not try to control, but instead lead by their own example and if you wish to follow, so be it.
Only the left has to compel you to do what they want while they sit by and watch, such as the whole "Gee I don't pay enough in taxes, the government should raise it on all of us."
