Ah yes, this is our colorblind, post-racial, Obama America
Some leftist hack in Phoenix noticed that, oh no, many of the lifeguards at pools used by minorities were in fact a lighter skin tone than the kids using the pool.
That's a huge problem! Because in 2013 the thing we should really be worried about is the skin color of the person charged with saving kids from drowning.
"On a recruiting effort there over the winter, the city's Melissa Boyle tells students she's not looking for strong swimmers."
"We will work with you in your swimming abilities"
Yeah, that sounds like a splendid idea! Let's recruit people who cannot perform or have difficulty performing the ONE thing every lifeguard has to be able to do. Let's not hire on whether the person can perform the job well (or at all) but on what color their skin is. I mean I would much rather have a bunch of incompetent people around who are charged with saving my life, but I don't want the icky competent ones because they don't look like me!
Man, if a kid dies because of this Boyle is opening up a huge liability issue. But hey, why should merit ever mean anything in America when we can race bait and play identity politics?
"The kids in the pool are all either Hispanic or black or whatever, and every lifeguard is white,""and we don't like that. The kids don't relate"
Oh yes, because it's obviously of the utmost importance that kids be able to relate to their lifeguard, but whether that lifeguard is a strong swimmer or not is of little consequence. Also, the inference here is that the kids just can't relate to the lifeguards because they're different races?! That's just so flatly racist in it's own right, and as someone who lives with a black man whom I consider a friend, that kind of attitude just rubs me the wrong way. It assumes automatically that "relatability" revolves around skin color. Pretty disgusting if you ask me.
This is like recruiting overweight, fat, bald men to star in women's lingerie commercials because you want to be politically correct and not appear "sexist."

Maybe the Beverly Hills Police Department should not hire African-Americans or Hispanics, since the rich, white residents in that city would not be able to relate to them.
Hmm, I wonder how many life guards have hearing or vision disabilities ?
Maybe they need to step up and hire a few. After all, diversity is more important then functionally being able to do the job apparently.
I never understood the need for affirmative action in the year 2013. As a minority myself, I cannot comprehend why people feel the need to get a "break" from the system, nor do I understand all these people who feel that without affirmative action minorities would just fall through the cracks. Work hard, get an education and be smart. This will not eliminate discrimination but it will help a lot. People will always discriminate. Even ugly people of get discriminated, just a fact. If you fall under any of those categories, just work harder. Sorry life's not fair. Social engineering does not work. We Americans are supposed to be tough, rugged individuals. Good Grief!
