"Just a goddamn piece of paper!"

This Realclearpolitics article says "Liberals are stumped by the Constitution" with regards to the Constitutional violations contained in Obamacare.

That's not it at all in my opinion.  Are Liberals generally ignorant of Constitutional Law?  Yes, but that's not the problem.  The problem is that they just don't care about the Constitution.  They don't respect it. (this applies to plenty of "conservatives" as well by the way.  See GWB)

I had a discussion regarding Obamacare some time ago with my Liberal roommate (who fancies himself a "moderate") his ultimate retort towards the end of our discussion was that if something is "the right thing to do for the health and progress of the nation, it should be done even if it violates Constitutional Law."  His contention was that we should not let the Constitution or Constitutional rights impede social progress.

It always irks me that the same people who think that "passing another law" will magically stop violent crime, or creating a "gun-free zone" will keep people with malicious intent out see no contradiction when they claim that the supreme law of the land should be violated in the name of "social progress."  If you have no issue with politicians breaking the law to get what you want what makes you think the average street criminal will respect the new laws you want to foist upon society?

If the Constitution is to be ignored whenever a politician or a majority of Americans feel something is "the right thing to do"  then the Constitution is a worthless relic and you and I have no true rights.  The truly scary thing is how prevalent his viewpoint is among ordinary Americans.

The Constitution is more or less a contract; you can't break a contract just because of a whim, and the Constitution should be treated in the same manner.

The "Just a goddamn piece of paper!" always seems to get laid on George W. Bush.

However, no one has ever been able to find the actual source of the allegation, other than a Capitol Hill Blue story by a whacked out nut job known for writing false stories based on absolutely nothing (now withdrawn as false by the author http://factcheck.org/2007/12/bush-the-constitution-a-goddamned-piece-of-paper/ ). . .

Not one of the supposed sources (the unnamed three senior Republican Congresscritters GWB allegedly yelled this at) has ever come forward.

This "quote" has been floating around da Intarwebzz since 2005, yet not one major Democrat power player like Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, etc., has ever openly used it in campaigning against GWB or his policies.

If it had a shred of validity, do you really think they would had just ignored it?

Tell your liberal roommate that his freedom of speech is an antiquated idea and that national security concerns demand that he STFU. See how much he likes an abridgement or infringement of an enumerated right feels. Maybe then he might respect the Constitution a bit more.

Nah, ya can't fault everyone for being a liberal.

Braden - He'd just bring up some variaton of the "guns are different" argument and claim you can't compare them to the 1st Amendment because they are "instruments of imminent death."
