I just found out that the victim involved in the shooting in New Castle was Dave from Delaware Open Carry whom I've had lunch with before. Reading the thread over at Deloc it sounds like he's Ok. Thank god.
Good luck Dave. You've got my support. Obviously no charges have been filed, but if that changes I'll spare what I can towards a legal fund.

Avoidance Doesn't Always Work
A New Castle resident successfully defended himself with a gun when two men tried to rob him. Unfortunately an article in today's Delaware Online doesn't seem to get the point, saying,
Well no shit! If two men walk up to you and put a gun to your side while you're in the driveway I'm damn sure there's already an enormous risk to your personal safety. Who says you have "less skill" than your attacker?
Also, in this case the guy couldn't have been more than a few feet from the victim, since he apparently had a gun pressed against his side. Even someone with very little skill could defend himself in such a situation. Obviously there are no guarantees in these types of self-defense situations, but average folks have a very good track record of successfully defending themselves.
Furthermore, this guy says we should take steps to avoid being victims. Again, no shit! That's always true, but sometimes bad things happen through no fault of the victim. The problem is that avoidance doesn't always work, and in the event that you're selected as the victim of a violent attack it's best to have a backup plan. Avoidance is a great idea, but it's useless to harp on it after such events have already unfolded.
What this reporter and many like him don't understand is something I find very simple. Self defense works. Of course part of it is luck, as the reporter recognizes, but the other facet is preparedness. Having his gun on him gave this guy an option, and in this case it was the right option. I'd rather have that option than not, and I'm damn sure this guy's glad he had his gun.
I'd love for this reporter to explain to me how any of the bulleted points in his story would have stopped this attack. You can't deny facts, and the fact is that one thing did stop this attack. A bullet.
I'll note that they didn't say anything about the victim having a CCW permit, but I can't tell from the story whether the guy was in public or in his driveway. If he's on his property he might not need a permit. I confess that I've got no clue as to the legality of unlicensed CCW on your own property in Delaware.

I'm also noticing a trend here of folks noticing that we've had a serious up tick in violent crime here in Northern Delaware recently.
"The risks are enormous for the personal safety of victims with less skill at mastering a weapon in fearful situations. The potential for a hail of bullets, as opposed to a bullseye shot, cannot be ignored.
In most cases it's best not to resist. Even better, take steps to avoid being victimized."Well no shit! If two men walk up to you and put a gun to your side while you're in the driveway I'm damn sure there's already an enormous risk to your personal safety. Who says you have "less skill" than your attacker?

We think http://anothergunblog.blogspot.com is written by a man (73%).
The bad. It rates my livejournal as 81% written by a woman. Must have been all the stupid emo BS I wrote in there as a kid when I was actually updating it regularly. Still, that's flat out embarrassing.

"That’s it, folks. There’s no tinfoil, no paranoia, no fear. It’s just a thing I do."
-Laurel on why she carries
RTWT.
In fact, Laurel's post reminds me of an exchange I had with a fellow UD student regarding the VT shooting. We had some back & forth and she then responded that she would never shoot a gun, not even to save her own life. The bolded portion of her response shows the serious logical disconnect that anti-gun folks seem to have. Violence in self-defense was OK, but violent self-defense with a gun was unimaginable.

Go Meleanie!
Looks like Meleanie Hann is suing the sheriff who tried to revoke her permit!
I like this approach. It's ballsy, but I like it. Crap like this won't stop happening until the authorities feel the consequences of their actions.

Dear H&K
You suck and I hate you.
Estonian Police destroying perfectly good combloc pistols as part of an arms deal with H&K.
If only they'd saved a TT-33 and a Makarov for me......
*of course this is just some group of pics posted on a forum, so I can't speak to the accuracy of the information. Either way, it's sad to see perfectly good guns being destroyed.

And inside of it was one of these....... (click the pic to embiggen)
P229R .40S&W / .357 SIG DAK

What looks like a rough frame just below the slide is actually just a bit of excess slide glide. This thing is almost flawless aesthetically. Hardly looks like a sub $500 used gun.

Quote of The Day
"...All it will take are a couple of nutjobs shooting cops through the armor with regular hunting rifles for your gun rights to be in serious jeopardy....Because then they will be labeled as "high-powered sniper rifles". What defense will you mount then? How will you convince a gun banner who hates ALL guns that your guns are somehow less dangerous than a semi-auto that fires a less-powerful, less accurate cartridge than your 7mm Remington Magnum game rifle? "
Armed Canadian
Hunters & sportsman are a huge demographic and we need their support. On the other hand, they also need to support us. (and many do) As with most things when we're talking gun rights the key is education. We need to remember that we're all in this together and avoid alienating one group or another.
Most importantly, as Matt discusses, we need to get hunters/sportsman to see the light and understand the true nature of gun-control in this country. They need to understand that no gun is safe. All guns are fair game, whether they be too big, too small, too quiet or loud etc. We're not dealing with rational people. They raise hell about the danger of "military style weapons." Guess what? Your deer rifle may not look like my AR-15, but you can bet it has military lineage and the anti-rights crowd will lump it in with my AR the 1st chance they get.

New "Movie Guns"
A new Movie Guns post is up over at Legion's Fate. This week it's Underworld, one of my favorite vampire/zombie movies. I've watched this movie many, many times and always enjoy it.
Guns, vampires, werewolves, and the lovely Kate Beckinsale shootin' it up in skin-tight leather. What's not to like?
There's supposed to be an Underworld 3 prequel coming out in 2009, but without Kate Beckinsale in it my bet is it'll flop pretty badly.

National Ammo Day
Is November 19th. That's two days away folks.
I think I've bought enough this month, so no ammo for me on Wednesday. Hell, I bought a 1/2 case of 5.56, 1/2 case of .357SIG, 3 boxes of .40, and a case of 9mm this month. I think I should be good for a little while with that, especially given that I haven't been shooting because of my wrist.
Remember, everytime you buy ammo Bryan Miller gets angry, and let's face it, it's funny to watch him go nuts.

Two Good Things About the Election Being Over
1. Joe Biden is no longer my Senator. Good Riddance!
2. We won't have to hear liberals whine constantly about how Bush is a Dictator/Tyrant/Murderer etc and Karl Rove is his evil genius plotting to take over the world. (Bush = Pinky and Rove = Brain?) Dictators don't generally allow free elections and transitions of power. If Bush is so evil where's the power grab, and how did Obama get elected?

Yeah, Gun Sales Are Up.
I stopped by my FFL's house to pickup my latest "high capacity assault pistol" and he said he's done more business in the last few weeks than he usually does in a year! I'd say that's a good indicator that gun sales are through the roof.
The one problem he's having is he can't get orders filled because manufacturers are out of stock. He's a Sig Dealer and has a bunch of 556's on backorder. Apparently there was a run on them and they disappeared in all of 2 days.
This was Sig number 4 for me and I haven't bought a single gun from him. I feel bad about that, but on the other hand why pay him more if I'm finding good deals? I'd also forgotten the gun I bought had night sights, so that was a nice surprise.
The problem now is that I injured my stronghand wrist in a game of pickup basketball over a month ago and it's still bothering me. I doubt it's going to get any better than it is right now, so I need to just head to the range and see how things work out.

Well That's Interesting...
I'm looking at Sitemeter logs and I'm apparently the #1 google search result for "Cerebral Palsy rape whistle." which brings up this post.
Personally I think one of these would be far more effective than a rape whistle, so long as your Cerebral Palsy does not prevent you from safely firing a gun.

Sight Paint
I've decided to go ahead and finally paint the sights on my P6 because honestly, the black sights are a PITA and I'm too cheap to go buy new contrast sights.
So, is there a specific type of paint I need to use, or can I just buy some off the shelf model paint from AC Moore? I'm thinking I should do a bright white base coat followed by a bright flourescent orange.
Will bright nail polish followed by some kind of clear coat work fine in lieu of actual paint?

Veteran's Day
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of our military veterans and those in active service. To my Opa JR, poppop, and to my grandpa Francis, who I never had the pleasure to meet, Thank you for your service. Words cannot adequately express the gratitude I have for your service, and the service of all those who have sacrificed for this nation.
I think this photo helps make up for my lack of words today. Our veterans have sacrificed for this country and we should honor them not just today, but each and every day.

EBR's!
My friend Falnfenix just bought her 1st AR-15.........and she wrote a post about it. Go congratulate her! Her boyfriend bought one as well.
Oh, and I love the 1st video she posted. It's one of my favorites on the whole "evil scary gun" thing.
Also, I'm shamelessly stealing this link from Xavier. It's an excellent writeup on AR's.

Guns N' Beer
I believe I promised pics of the optics I bought a while back.
As promised. Nothing special of course, just your run of the mill sub $600 AR-15.

And here is the .22 upper. The 512 is mounted way forward for experimental purposes. It's now been moved back near the charging handle.

"I’m not another gun blog. I don’t use common sense all the time, because using common sense is code for I don’t want to have to think really hard when I need to solve a difficult problem. "
-DV/DBB/DTB (man of many ego-inflating names)
Interesting. DV says he doesn't use common sense to solve difficult problems. What the hell does he use then? Hope & Change? Unicorns? Fluffy bunnies?
When I need to solve difficult problem "common sense" is essential. I don't want to go pulling shit out of my ass that has no basis in reality, reason, logic or fact because without those things it's pretty damn unlikely I'm going to develop a practical solution.
You know what happens when people think they can solve problems without common sense? We get moronic "solutions" like gun control that can only be dreamed up when you've engaged in problem solving that involves no rational thought.
Here's Obama on curbing gun violence.
Maybe I'm just a dumb gun nut clinging to my guns, but I don't see how calling for reenacting of previously failed legislation is either "common sense" or "change." I'd say it more clearly qualifies as insanity.

Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.Clearly he understands that urban violence is a "difficult problem," and clearly "common-sense" was nowhere to be found when he crafted this brilliant policy proposal so full of hope & change. Common sense and actually thinking would require enacting a different policy than the one that Clinton's tried, and that his own administration concluded it didn't actually have a positive impact on crime. *(see summary pg. 96).

Obama's "New Kind of Politician."
Not surprisingly (at least not to us rational folks) Barack Hope N' Change Obama has selected Rahm Emanuel as his White House Chief of Staff. Emanuel is a Chicago politician and former member of the Clinton White House.
It would appear that the man is exactly the kind of guy the real Barack Obama wants on his side. Obama, despite his rhetoric, has proven to be your usual Chicago politician. Ignorant, arrogant, intolerant, unwilling to compromise, and downright nasty to those who don't share his worldview. Quelling free speech with the NRA ad fiasco, Obama "Truth Squads," telling his supporters to "get in the face" of fellow Americans etc. etc.
We saw some of the real Barack Obama during the campaign, and now that he's President the choice of Emanuel is true to Obama's nature as a politician. Emmanuel has a reputation as a nasty, uber partisan asshole who's a proponent of Chicago style "dirty politics." He's exactly what Obama wants, a tactless, classless politician that'll do his bidding while allowing Obama to keep his own hands clean. If you're a Democrat maybe you can liken him to Karl Rove?
You are a reflection of those you surround yourself with. Does this sound like someone a man espousing values of hope, change, unity, and tolerance would appoint? Does it sound like the kind of guy you'd appoint if you really believed your BS campaign promises of bipartisanship and "reaching across the aisle with Republicans?"
"At a dinner to celebrate President Clinton's first election victory, Mr Emanuel began to name those who he believed had earned his enmity. As he listed the names of those he saw as traitors, he grabbed a steak knife, stood up and began plunging the knife into the table and shouting "Dead! Dead! Dead!" after each name."
Stay classy Rahm Emmanuel!
As many of us already knew, Barack Obama is a liar, and his idea of change isn't anything of the sort. Obama and Emmanuel must surely know a thing or two about "Liberal Tolerance." Funny to see the parallels between the far left blogosphere's actions vs. words and those of our radical Marxist President.

Sweet Jesus!
Yesterday Ammoman said they were ~5 days behind on orders. Usually if I order a case of ammo from them I've got confirmation and a tracking number the same day. It usually arrives at my house in 2-3 days.
Today Ammoman's site has the following message
"AMMOMAN.COM WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY NEW ORDERS FOR A DAY OR TWO WE ARE 2000 ORDERS BEHIND AND NEED TO CATCH UP WE WILL NOT BE TAKING PHONE OR FAX ORDERS WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ANSWER THE PHONES IT MAY TAKE UP TO 3 DAYS OR MORE TO ANSWER YOUR E-MAILS PLEASE BE PATIENT AND WE WILL BE WORKING SATURDAY AND SUNDAY TO CATCH UP WE WERE GETTING UP TO 800 ORDERS A DAY AND THAT'S JUST TOO MUCH FOR US THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING"
Good lord! Did everyone in America decide to start stockpiling ammo yesterday? I guess it's safe to say no one really believes Obama's BS about respecting the 2nd Amendment.
I wonder what it'll be like on January 19th 2009?

AR's.
Top Gun Supply looks like they've got a few AR-15's still in stock. If you're looking for one I couldn't recommend a better place to buy. I love TGS! (Click back to long-guns to see all manufacturers.)
They also have a 5.45 x 39 S&W M&P 15R for sale which is very tempting, though I sure as hell don't have ~$900 to spend. Sure, I have savings, but that money is in savings for a reason. Still, thoughts of ~$130 cases of ammo are dancing through my head. This election has already caused me to spend far more than I'd originally planned. (though some purchases were just the result of finding deals too good to pass up) I figure I can hold out until Dec/Jan before picking up another lower receiver. I'd buy two if I thought I had the wherewithal, dexterity, and patience to build them myself.
I think I'm good to go as far as AR mags are concerned, since I've got 10+. Again, I could use a few 20 rounders, but I'm not in a huge rush. I also need pistol mags, but again I'm not in a rush and unlike P225 mags, the supply of P228/P229 mags isn't going to all of a sudden dry up.
The one great thing about legislation is that it takes time. If a new AWB or some other draconian restrictions come it won't be in the next few days or weeks. I understand the rush to immediately buy up 10 AR lowers, 100 high capacity mags, and cases upon cases of ammo, but I think it's best to be a bit patient at the moment. Unless you find an awesome deal right now there's no real reason to max out the credit card in the next few days.
Everything you can buy today will still be avaliable a month or two from now unless it's something especially rare or scarce. Buy. Buy a lot, but also remember to chill out and be smart.

Totally Didn't See That Coming...
From Aimsurplus.com
"Due to high order/back order volume we are currently experiencing a slight delay in shipping. Please allow for an additional 4-5 working days for us to process your order. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause"
Faced with an Obama/Biden White House and a Pelosi/Reid Congress folks are panicing and stockpiling all they can now. You can't blame them. I'm doing the same, and my credit card and checking account are hemorrhaging like crazy.
I can't say that I expect an onslaught of federal anti-gun measures to come down the pike right away. I guess that'll all depend on how ambitious, power-hungry, and downright stupid Obama, Biden, and the Dems are. I have almost no faith that they remember 1994 or have any capacity to learn from their mistakes. They are politicians after all, and diehard liberals at that.
I seriously doubt Obama or Biden would hesitate to aggressively help push any anti-gun legislation they can. Why? Obama is from an insulated bastion of anti-gun liberal policies. As a Chicago politician there's never been any risk to him supporting all manner of gun-control laws.
The same can be said for Biden. Yes, Delaware is infinitely more pro-gun than Cook County IL, but Biden is basically a shoe-in for re-election in Delaware regardless and being a flaming anti-gunner isn't going to change that. I honestly believe Biden could get re-elected in Delaware if you put an (R) next to his name.
Honestly, I think there's the possibility of a perfect storm headed our way. If I'm wrong then great. Either way it can't hurt to have a few extra goodies stashed away. Plus it gets the anti's panties in a bunch.
UPDATE - AIM's site now says 10-14 working days delay and even Ammoman is delayed roughly a week. That explains why my case of 5.56 hasn't shipped yet.

Got Guns?
If you don't then I have two things to say.
1. What the hell are you waiting for?
2. Stock up between now and January 2009.
I'll have a post up on Obama's win later. There may be some criticizm of him in it, but I will congratulate him because let's face it, he did win this election decisively and it is a historic event. No matter how much I may dislike him and his policies no one can take this accomplishment away from him, and no one should try to diminish it just because they don't support him.

Liberal Tolerance
It looks like Linoge got a dose of the same kind of liberal "tolerance" shown to me by the Delaware Liberal crowd. He got banned from the Blue Herald website for having the audacity to offer a dissenting opinion and be critical of Barack Hussein Obama. Obviously it's their right to ban him from their private site, but such behavior reflects poorly upon those sites who take such actions against dissent.
Linoge says,
"The administrators of Blue Herald have blocked my IP, simply because I had the nerve to disagree with them - this after they called me (and others like me) names for daring to disagree with a Senator Barack Hussein Obama supporter."
Yup, it seems that reaction is par for the course among the compassionate, understanding & tolerant "progressives" on the left, whether it be the Blue Herald, Delaware Liberal, or the infamous Brady Campaign Blog. "Reasoned Discourse" it is, something you won't see here at Another Gun Blog. I fully believe in free exchange of ideas, and it's kinda the entire point of having a blog that allows comments.

Post of the Day
Duffy has an absolute must read on Barack and Joe the Plumber
(yes, I'm linking to him twice in a row)

Self Defense Works
A scumbag rapist breaks into a woman's home and rapes her. She reports the crime. He returns a few days later and breaks in again, only this time he's greeted with a shotgun blast and dies in the hospital. Good riddance. That's one less scumbag rapist who'll never victimize another woman.
Folks like Barack Obama would rather this woman be unarmed and forced to wait for police. He and his ilk would have us believe that the homeowner being armed is more likely to make the situation worse rather than stop the threat. In the real world however, average citizens protect themselves daily with nothing more than a gun and the will and ability to use it.
Common sense and stories like this prove the anti's wrong time and time again. I'm saddened that this woman had to suffer through the 1st rape before putting Mr. Preyer six feet under. I can think of no better place for home-invading rapists. They cannot be reformed and folks like Obama aren't too keen on keeping them in jail for good.
H/T to Duffy for the link.

Shipping a Handgun
How exactly do I go about shipping a pistol off for work/refinishing? The recipient is an FFL. Do I just box it up, bring it to the nearest UPS hub, have them slap a "Adult Signature Required" label on it and ship it out Next Day Air? I know not to put anything on the outside of the box indicating that it's a firearm, but am I supposed to tell the UPS folks that it's a firearm?
Input from those who have done this before would be greatly appreciated.

Quote of The Day
This one from Barack I'm not a Socialist Obama. Responding to a question about how to get folks to change their lifestyles.
"I think it is important for us to send some price signals to change behavior."
- Barack Obama
Us = The Government, whom Obama apparently thinks should be engaged in price fixing of products sold in this country. I have news for Obama. 3rd world shithole dictatorships engage in that kind of economic meddling all the time and it hasn't worked out for people very well. There's a reason we refer to those countries as "3rd world."
By the way, this is yet another comment that screams socialism from the guy who ardently denies he's a socialist. Then again, he also denies he's anti-gun. Wasn't it one of our Delaware Liberal friends who said "I'm not anti-gun just pro-law?" Yeah, well I guess that's kinda like Obama. He's not "pro-socialism" just "anti-freedom."
H/T to Bruce, who has more.

I've Received a Ringing Endorsement
From Delaware's far left. I must say that if a member of the radical left in this state has the following to say about me then I've done something right. I was also banned from the site at some point in the last month. Unsurprising action from the tolerant "progressive" left.

"mike w leads nothing and is in no position to lead anything. mike w influences nothing and is in no danger of influencing anything. mike w is not credible on anything that I know of and is in no danger of being especially credible.I must say that I'm quite flattered by Cassandra's kind words..... Stay classy Cassandra. Her words speak for themselves without any real comments necessary on my part. Oh, I was also called a "racist"in this thread, but I saw that coming from a mile away. It's the standard meme from folks who have no intellectually substantive arguments. (and lord knows we've seen FAR too much of that this election cycle.) If you dare question "The Messiah" or dare say you won't vote for him it must be racist...
He is a bigoted and uninformed fool and the world is not aligned to treat these folks kindly. Unfortunately, folks like mike w will never have enough self awareness to know how they are complicit in their own issues. I mostly ignore him and I urge everyone else to do the same. When you see The Stupid just think for a second how much energy you’ll waste engaging with him. Because you already know he doesn’t hear you, he doesn’t respect you, and he doesn’t give a damn about your positions on anything."
