Fighting Knife Crime With Facebook

The Brits are doing it. Apparently in the country formerly known as Great Britain you can own knives, but may only keep them in your home. So, in their infinite wisdom the British authorities are using Facebook to go after wankers who have pictures of themselves holding weapons in public places.

Talk about an incredible waste of police resources. What will the progressive Brits do next? Ban blacksmithing?

Baby Steps

I can't believe I completely neglected to mention this.

My mom held one of my Sigs over the weekend. In fact, she knew I was heading to the range with my brother and asked to see what I had. This is the 1st time she's ever held a gun other than on a police range with a cop within arms length of her. Interestingly, she seems a bit unnerved that none of my guns have safeties

Anticipation

My P228 slide will be back from CCR next week!

Awww, Be Nice to the Children

Robb has the audacity to comment on an anti-gunners blog post, so she throws a temper tantrum and pulls the post. Jesus, how do such thin-skinned people even survive in the world? Hell I leave anonymous commenting on for this blog and have gotten some unbelievably nasty comments.

Silly child. Doesn't she know that a blog is essentially worthless if you don't allow comments? I've seen my share fair of liberals moderating comments to quell dissent, but I've never seen someone scrub an entire post because of a comment. This is funny.

I feel like this is the kind of woman who'd seriously call me a "doodyhead."

Update - It appears that both mine and Robb's links to her post have disappeared from her webpage.

.357 SIG Huh?

I went to the range today. Sadly my dad didn't join my brother and I. He went golfing since the weather was so nice. That's OK though, I'll get him to the range one of these days. We shot at Targetmaster in PA and shot a P229R DAK, P229, and P6.

If I didn't shoot the .357 SIG and my P6 back to back I could have mistaken the SIG for 9mm. Recoil isn't objectionably harsh. It's more of a quick rearward snap and then it's over with. Yes, it was more than the 9mm when I compared them, but I was expecting more.

My brother and I may have gotten our P229 mags mixed up, which is bad since his have been beat to hell during training with the DSP (he's been training new recruits all this week.) It's not really a big deal, I just need to be sure I buy a couple brand new .40/.357 SIG mags just to be sure.

He shot my P229R DAK, and I shot his duty gun, a DA/SA P229. To be honest the long DAK trigger gets tiresome after a while so it was a nice change of pace to shoot his P229. All 3 guns were 100% reliable, as I've come to expect from Sig.

I did have one "oops" moment. We'd pretty well used up the target and were shooting at the corners. I was shooting at the top right corner and hit the target carrier once. I switched to the bottom after that just to be sure I didn't do it again. Talk about feeling like a dumbass.

We did a bit of shooting from 15 and 20 yards out, and I was frankly surprised I hit anything at all, since I've never shot beyond 7-10 yards before today.

I need to shoot more. A lot more.

Quote of The Day - Obama Edition

"America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. "

-President Barack H. Obama - Inaugural Address - Jan 20, 2009

This is a wonderful passage from his speech, and I agree with it wholeheartedly. That said, nothing he's said or done in the past gives me any confidence whatsoever that he'll remain faithful to our founding documents.

This is a man who doesn't consider the 2nd Amendment an individual right and who clearly abhors the very notion that we all have a natural right to self defense. This is a man, a Constitutional Law professor, who claims the Constitution "grants" rights. (see Tam's take on that bit) He's not much better on the 1st Amendment, where he tried to shut down his political dissent. His actions on that front clearly conflict with the ideals of our founding fathers.

As it stands I've seen little to nothing that leads me to believe President Obama has even read our founding documents, much less that he understands them. So, while I agree with the sentiment espoused by his quote I'll remain pessimistic about the prospect of this country reverting back to the ideals of our founders. Rather I believe we'll move full speed ahead towards Euro style socialism (at a faster pace than we have the past 8 years, under so-called "conservatives")

I sincerely hope that I'm wrong.

Question.....

Are you filled with Hope and Change yet?

Obama is my President

I may not like Obama, but he won the election and he's the President for the next few years. This is a historic day and I wish him and his family the best.

That said, he's' promised the American people the world this election cycle. Tonight I'll have a beer and hope that he's a typical politician and breaks all those promises. Not only will that be good from a policy standpoint, but it'll be fun to watch all the diehard liberal idealist scream "but, but, but..... he's "The One" as he disappoints them.

Also of note - my sister is marching with the AI high school band at the inauguration today. Cold day to be out doing that.

Range Time

My friend Falnfenix has a range report up at her blog Go read!

Now she just needs to get those AR's built so she can head out to Elk Neck.

I took the day off today. It's the 1st time since the blog bash, but sadly the range is closed today since it's a state holiday.

Obama A Bitter Clinger

“I’m still clinging to my BlackBerry,” Mr. Obama said Wednesday in an interview with CNBC and The New York Times. “They’re going to pry it out of my hands.”

Keep on clinging Barack.  You cling to your blackberry and I'll keep buying guns, particularly the ones you say don't belong in my hands.

Quote of The Day

"Resistance to sudden violence, for the preservation not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property, is an indisputable right of nature which I have never surrendered to the public by the compact of society, and which perhaps, I could not surrender if I would."

  - John Adams - Boston Gazette, Sept. 5, 1763

-It's sad to think that so many Americans have forgotten that such a fundamental law of nature should at all times trump the law of man.

Shooting At William Penn High School

A student was shot in the parking lot of William Penn High School despite the fact that,

1. This is a "Gun-Free Zone" per both State and Federal law. How could there possibly be a shooting in a gun-free zone?

2. police officers were already at the scene, yet someone was still shot and the shooter was not apprehended.

Nevertheless, our schools will continue to remain "Gun-Free Zones." After all, we must think of the chidren.

*I drive past William Penn on my trips to the shooting range.

Quote of the Day

"Freedom: it's a tough sell, unless it's your own. "

-Steve Newton of Delaware Libertarian in an excellent post about sports betting, online poker, and the nanny state that must "protect us from ourselves."

As someone who played quite a few real money tourneys on Pokerstars and dabbled in a bit of online sports betting I fully support such "vices." I'll also support freedom of choice in other activities some may consider vices, because when you cut away all the bullshit rationalizations you're really left with only one central issue. Should people be able to do as they wish with their own money? (their own bodies etc. etc.?) The answer of course is yes.

Just because it may not be my cup of tea doesn't mean I should wish to prevent them from doing as they please.

On another note, I find Jason's assertion that sports betting and the lotto are a "regressive tax" on the poor to be baffling. Sports betting and lottery tickets are 100% voluntary expenditures, thus they cannot be considered a tax. Taxation carries with it the implicit threat of force as a means to compel payment. Using your money for entertainment does not have any coercive government force attached. It may be true that the poor spend a disproportionate amount of their earning on sports betting or the lotto, but that's their choice. Freedom of choice means that rich or poor, we're all free to make choices about how to spend our money. That means you're free to lose money at poker, I'm free to lose money at the strip joint, and Bob's free to lose money playing the Powerball.

New Years Resolutions

Step # 1 - Buy new running shoes

Step # 2 - Stock up on Advil

Shoes should be here next week and then I can start hitting the old XC courses. My goal is to get back to where I used to be, running ~20 miles per week and maybe one hill workout per month. I'm hoping that running on mostly trails vs. pavement will keep me injury free.

My other resolutions are as follows.

- Get to the range on a regular basis - This is going to require a commitment to waking up early.

- Bring a few newbies to the range - This probably won't happen till it gets warmer, at least into the 40's and 50's.

Looking at my resolution from last year I can't say I'm too disappointed. I did gain weight, though not the 10-20 pounds I'd hoped. Still, any weight gain is good for me, since it sometimes feels damn near impossible.

Well That Worked Well.

Back in March I said I was done buying guns in 2008. Since then I've bought a .22 upper, a P228, and a P229R.

I averaged a new gun every 2 months last year. I'll put money on that not being the case this year.

Happy New Year everyone!
