VIP is good

Free food and good beer! It's all about who you know. Knowing the manager so you can get into the VIP pre-opening is good.

I'm not a big steak fan, but after this I just might be!

Crap

So I cleaned and lubed up four pistols, loaded mags, gave my sister the safety briefing and headed to the range with her & mom.

We make the long drive only to find the rifle & pistol range closed for the next. 3 weeks for renovations.

Oh well. They were excited too. My baby sis immediately decided the 1911 was the gun she wanted to shoot as well.

An old device

MIT researchers develop an apparatus that makes you feel like you're 75 years old. (I honestly don't see how this in any way simulates arthritis, FWIW)

"Braces and bands mimic joint stiffness and muscular fatigue. Leg straps create slower leg movements, and helmet attachments give the wearer an age-induced curved spine. Yellow eyeglasses make it difficult to read small print...."

Hmm, that all sounds familiar, which begs the question, what's it going to be like when I actually am 75 years old?  Dad and I often joke that I'd better hope for some revolutionary advancements in joint repair / replacement technology, but we're really only half joking.

Still, I kind of want to wear one of these things for a day, just to see what it's like.

More guns

Less crime.  It's happening again.  Inconceivable!

The FBI reports a record number of NICS checks at the tail end of 2011 in a year where violent crime continues to drop nationwide.

BP9CC's for sale

Looks like Bersa BP9CC's are now in stock.  Interesting little gun, but I don't exactly need another pistol right now.

Shared sacrifice.

I guess a $4 million, 17 day Hawaii vacation on the taxpayer dime is what "shared sacrifice" looks like to President Obama.

This asshole plays class warfare, demonizes capitalism and business, talks about the rich needing to "pay their fair share" while we, the taxpayers, fund his lavish Christmas vacation.

Not a damn thing

Pistol packin' grandmas.  Don't mess with them.

Quote of the day - Jeff Cooper

“The will to survive is not as important as the will to prevail… the answer to criminal aggression is retaliation.”

- Col. Jeff Cooper

Or you could just give them what they want, blame society for their criminal ways, and beg for mercy.

Sir Mix-A-Lot

Would totally have come up with this T-shirt had Facebook been around when he hit it big.

I "like" it!

Balls

An Igloolik hunter with balls fights off attacking polar bear with a hammer, giving his buddy time to load his rifle and shoot the bear and her cubs.

Also, keep your damn guns loaded when you're in polar bear country!  You've gotta love morons in the comments complaining that they shot the bears.  You do what's needed to survive, and I'm willing to bet they ate the meat too.

Quote of the day - Interpretation

"The rules of left-PC dictate that it's how someone interprets words and actions that are of paramount import. The interpretation may have absolutely no basis in reality, but this doesn't matter."

- Hube - Discussing "Diversity" BS from the University of Delaware

The truly scary thing about Hube's quote is that it's true.  When words are evaluated on such a basis words lose all objective meaning. (which is mighty convenient for leftists and their failed ideology)

Also, the University of Delaware now has a "Center for the Study of Diversity?"  What the hell?!  That's what their ridiculous tuition increases are funding?  Of course this is par for the course for UD...

Did you know?

It is now apparently socially acceptable for a group of college students to throw a party and have no more beer on hand than a few (3) Bud Light's and maybe a half dozen year old Bud Light Lime's.

I mean hell, everyone knows that even if you're a poor college student you bum 8 bucks off someone and get a case of National Bohemian or Beast, right?  Kids these days...... sigh.

Signed,

The resident old guy.

Quote of the day - Collectivism

Collectivism is not inherently democratic, but gives to a tyrannical minority such powers as the Spanish Inquisitor never dreamed of. ”

In case you were wondering

The reason for this post?  I'm going back to school starting January 9th at a nearby law school.  It's 24 credits to get my certification, which I'm planning on doing over 3 semesters.

I've never done this whole "work full time, go to school at night" thing, and I haven't cracked a textbook since 2008, so I'm a little nervous.  Still, when The Firm steps in and says they'll reimburse me 100% if I'd like to go back to school I'd have to be crazy not to take them up on it.

Also, no school loans.  I have more than enough in savings to cover tuition, since I was planning on doing this even before work pulled me aside and offered to pay.

I'll still be blogging somewhat regularly until then, but after January 9th expect the free ice cream machine to be on the fritz here.  You may get some sweets occasionally, but don't get your hopes up.

Just get a gun

The anti's say our guns are just penis enhancements or penis compensators.  Obviously that means this poor guy should've just bought a 1911 instead of letting a "woman" "doctor"  inject his trouser monkey with silicone.

Seriously?  How small does your member have to be for you to be desperate enough to have a "woman" who looks like that stick a goddamn needle in your junk?!  I am in awe.

Change

The Obama Administration OK's holding American citizens indefinitely as "suspected terrorists" The Leftist MSM will be up in arms about this in 3...2....1... ok, you can stop laughing now.

Oh, and this little nugget just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

"The bill now gives the President the immediate power to issue a waiver of the military custody requirement, instead of the Defense Secretary, and gives the President discretion in implementing these new provisions."

Yeah, let's give the President even more power!  Awesome idea!  No wonder Obama supports it.  He's a power hungry Marxist who loves FDR, and lord knows FDR would've been a huge supporter of such a provision.

Consider this in the context of just who are "suspected terrorists" according to the Obama Administration

"There are laws on the books now that characterise who might be a terrorist: someone missing fingers on their hands is a suspect according to the department of justice. Someone who has guns, someone who has ammunition that is weatherproofed, someone who has more than seven days of food in their house can be considered a potential terrorist"

Have an accident while working the deli counter as a teenager?  You might be a terrorist.  Own guns and a bunch of ammo in ammo cans?  Terrorist!  Have a box of MRE's in your kitchen closet like my roommate and I? Terrorist!

Imagine the uproar on the left over this if we had a President McCain or President Palin right now.  This is why you don't give the President these powers in the first place folks!

A Girl And Her Gun

Go read this.  The whole thing.

Though my experience does not mirror hers, both the Cornered Cat and Lima's youtube channel were some of the first things I came across when I was an ignorant, neophyte gun owner.  They were a tremendous help to me.  I'm glad to see that those two ladies helped this woman turn a traumatic experience into something positive.

If even one person has read something here that has had a positive impact on their life and helped them grow and move in the right direction, then it's all worth it.  Keep in mind that when you blog you might be more of a positive influence than you know.

That's one of the greatest things about the gunnie community and the online gunblogging community in particular. They are incredibly accommodating, respectful, kind, and willing to help.  Hell, you can go to a blogshoot, shake hands with someone you've never met, and they'll graciously sit you down behind one of their rifles and help you out when you ask.  My experience was the rule, not the exception.

Go into her archives and read too.  The experiences of a neophyte gunnie are always an interesting read, and her blog does not disappoint.

Lines

Yes, this is the PA / DE line running through the middle of a neighborhood I was in while walking Zachary.

Step over that line and I can conceal. Step back and throwing on a jacket makes me a felon. Pure idiocy.

4 years

Another Gun Blog turns 4 today.  I started this blog on December 10, 2007 and received a total of 7 comments that month.

Amazingly, some of those commenters, like Weer'd and Breda, are still reading my scribblings.  They must be gluttons for punishment. :)

If all goes well I may be leaving the blogging world for at least a little while, so to those two, and to the rest of you who have read Another Gun Blog over the past four years, thank you!

Quote of the day - Plundering

Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else."

- Frédéric Bastiat

Even back in 1850, Bastiat did a masterful job of explaining "legal plunder" but try and explain it to your average American (or a liberal) and watch their eyes gloss over.

Also, I had someone tell me the other day that if we went back to Clinton-era federal spending we might still have been downgraded by S&P.  Laughable and unreal.

CDNN P225 mags

CDNN is having a sale on P225 / P6 magazines.  $29.99 each.  They're also doing a $5 flat rate shipping special.  I just bought a couple, as I haven't seen new P225 mags that cheap in a long time.

I also bought some Metalform 1911 mags.  We'll see if they work in the Dan Wesson.  If not, well they're under $10 so I'm not out much and I can always give them to other folks with 1911's.

Single Stack Bersa

As Jay notes, it looks like Bersa has come out with a single stack 9mm pistol for concealed carry.  21.5 ounces, a hair under 6.5 inches long and 5 inches tall and under an inch wide.  While not tiny, those stats put it at about the same size as a Bersa Thunder 380 only significantly thinner.

It's funny, I think of my smallest autoloader, a Sig P6 as svelte, but compared to most single stack CCW pieces on the market these days it's big and clunky, especially for something that carries 8+1 rounds of 9mm.

Laura, I'm looking at you!

Guns on my campus

A former UD student attempts suicide on campus right in front of the Library.  He's rushed to the hospital and survives. Had he decided to walk into the library and take a bunch of people out with him he could have done so easily.  I'm sure students, faculty, and administrators consider the library a "safe place" just like they'd consider Breda's gun-free library a "safe place."

How could this be!? How could it possibly happen? I mean just listen to University spokeswoman Meredith Chapman,

"Weapons are not permitted on the university campus."

Tell that to my floormate Freshman year, who ended up in the hospital after he was robbed on Main Street by two men, one of whom was armed with a knife. (career criminals btw)  Obviously they didn't respect the University's "weapons free zone" status.

Everytime I read something gun related in college papers I wish these kids would be more aware of the realities surrounding them.  Hell, It'd be nice if I could get through to my sister and her housemates, who live nearby where this happened and yet plenty of times I've been able to drob by and walk right in their unlocked front door.

Freshman Rachel Robbins had this to say,

"It's weird that somebody came onto campus with a gun," "It kind of made me think that anybody could be doing anything on our campus."

Well yes Rachel.  Anyone CAN do anything on UD's campus.  There's nothing weird about it.  Smoking weed and drinking underage are both illegal and against University policy, yet both activities were rampant when I was there a few years ago.

In fact, I could legally walk right past the library where that photo was taken while carrying a gun.  I could, if I so chose, carry a concealed firearm illegally all over campus, into dorms, lecture halls, and the library.  The only thing stopping me is my respect for the law and my choice not do so.  People can and do carry guns and other weapons on campus regularly, just as easily as this man did.  If you don't realize this it's because you're not paying attention and don't look at police reports.
Hell, if Rachel even bothered to read her own student paper, including what happened to one of it's editors, she'd see that criminals DO come onto campus* with firearms and use them to commit crimes in a target-rich environment.

*Oh look, the victim is harmed after complying.  Also, anyone notice the one thing most of the criminals in these stories had in common?

Seriously folks, a quick google search will show you violent crimes happen all over UD's campus.  The University administration would have you believe that their gun free, weapon-free campus is a "safe place" and they'll do whatever they can to keep up that image even though it's fantasy.

Infamy

Today is the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  I'd have to look at my poppop's selective service card, but I'm pretty sure he joined the USAF just shortly after the attack.  To this day he still doesn't like the Japs.

Here are some pictures from that day via Life Magazine which I'd never seen before.

Beretta Nano

Another review of the little Beretta Nano, over at Sigforum.

Chicks with pocket guns

Via e-mail this morning, a review of the Beretta Nano from Destinee.  Interesting little gun, and it's very slim.  I'll admit I don't have much use for such guns without my DE CCDW, and I'm not a fan of Glock type trigger safeties at all.

The only thing missing from the video is that with all those wardrobe changes she didn't change into a librarian outfit.

Also, looking at her other videos it is very refreshing to see her actually keeping her finger off of the damn bang switch.

Why Firearms?

What other weapon can a middle aged store clerk pick up, having never used one before, and effectively stop an armed robber who already has his gun out?

Granted, the store clerk did a few things wrong, like firing a warning shot into the floor.  That said, a man who had never fired a gun before had one when he needed it and was able to stop an attack without any prior training or practice.

Yes or no?

To refinish or not to refinish?

This gun.

Gun-shaped bottle openers?

Seriously?  I'm really not a fan of stupid gun-themed novelty items.  Besides, it should be shaped like something more classy, say a 1911, if I'm going to be opening Burton Baton with it.

Phrase of the day

"Shockwave Propagation Through the Female Posterior"

- Alan

Discussing the effects of recoil on the female posterior when shooting rifles from the prone position.  Clearly this is a subject that requires more research, and remember, bigger is better.  Anyone have a Barrett?  I'm kidding of course!

In honor of my new iPhone 4GS

Let me introduce you to "Shit That Siri Says"  I laughed out loud.

Now, you might think a new phone would mean more blogging, but every time I would sit down to blog I find myself doing other things these days.  There's going to be a lot less posting here at Another Gun Blog shortly, but I'll hold off on discussing that further until I know for sure, lest I jinx myself.

Also, this phone takes great pictures compared to the 8gb. 3G I was using.  Combine that with the tools in the new Instagram app and you get cool pictures, even from someone who isn't a photo guy.

On an unrelated note, you know you've got a well-behaved chocolate lab when he will sit next to you, off-leash and not move * while you snap a picture of the pond.

This post had more written but blogger ate it and I'm too lazy to re-type.  Insert words here about how I carried the Dan Wesson at a busy park, a happy couple took a liking to Zachary & played fetch with him, and not a single person had any reaction whatsoever to the big, shiny hunk of steel on my hip. That is the norm. Seriously folks, if you're hesitant about open carrying, don't be.

Soldiers' Angels Fundraiser

Linoge is running a fundraiser for Soldiers' Angels.  Donate to them for a chance to win all kinds of cool prizes, including The Best Belt from Michael and a custom holster from Dennis at Dragon Leatherworks.

Again, here's the donation link for Soldiers' Angels.

Quote of the day - Two plus two equals?

"In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it."

- George Orwell

Indeed.  Just look at anti-gunners.  Their positions necessitate that what is, is not.  And it's not just anti-gunners.  Look at CNN, MSNBC etc. etc. today parrotting the "unemployment drops from 9 to 8.6%!" line. You would think something great happened.

What their rosy headlines fail to mention is that the rate dropped because some 315,000 people left the labor force. That is, they stopped looking for work.  Just think, if we can get a million more American's to stop looking for a job maybe the liberal media can claim unemployment has dropped to 7% under Obama!  A Keynesian success!
