I had a dream last night. In it I was open carrying a broken Taurus. A Taurus! What the hell?!

Quote of the day - Scapegoats
"Every movement that seeks to enslave a country, every dictatorship or potential dictatorship, needs some minority group as a scapegoat which it can blame for the nation's troubles and use as a justification of its own demands for dictatorial powers. In Soviet Russia, the scapegoat was the bourgeoisie; in Nazi Germany, it was the Jewish people; in America, it is the businessmen."
- Ayn Rand - Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal (1966)
Rand wrote that 45 years ago and look at what we see today, business being attacked consistently by the political elite as means of both gaining more power and of deflecting blame off of themselves.

Kick Some Ass
How many people wanna kick some ass? I do, I do.
See? This is the danger of pulling out a random mix CD to listen to on the ride into work. Now I'm gonna have this song stuck in my head all morning. Oh well, I guess it's better than Lambchop or Barney.

Is it the guns or is it people?
The guns are the problem, not sick people like this teenager, right? I mean people like this guy are no danger to anyone if we ban all guns, right?
"Police found evidence that Williams fatally beat a family cat with a flashlight and set it on fire at a remote cul-de-sac, where they found the charred remains of a cat collar. A witness reported seeing a burned cat carcass in the same location earlier, the Prosecutor's Office said. Documents said Williams admitted to killing the cat and said he tried to kill the animal with his bare hands, but it was taking too long so he bludgeoned it to death. Williams told police he put the cat’s body in his car for a few days before burning the body."
There are sick, violent, evil, deranged people in the world. That is exactly why citizens retaining the right (and means) of defending themselves is a moral imperative. If someone like this guy attacked you do you really think you could "reason" with him or "just give him what he wants?" I'd say that's highly unlikely. You can't combat crazy and violent with reason, but multiple jacketed hollowpoints are a universal language that even crazy understands.
Also, I don't even want to think about what I'd do if I saw a man trying to kill my dog with his bare hands.

Man
It's really weird having both of my parents now officially retired. I'm so used to meeting mom, dad, or both for lunch in Wilmington at least a few times a month.
I guess it's both a good and a bad thing. The good thing? I'll get to see them more often. The bad? I'll get to see them more often. So far I think they're enjoying themselves, and they're taking Zack on long walks everyday so he'll lose some of his fattitude.
Mom said last week that she wants me to bring her to the range again soon and a friend of hers wants to tag along. I'd like to see her buy her own gun or at least permanently borrow one of mine.

The race card
You knew some idiot liberal was going to play it with regards to the debt ceiling debates. It is the tool of the intellectually vapid. It's no surprise then that Sheila Jackson-Lee, a racist woman with an astounding lack of intellect would be the one to play that card.
With people like her in Congress is it any surprise the country is screwed?

Klutz and a gun
I'm at Purebread Deli over the weekend, grabbing a bite to eat with my sister because it is just too damn hot to go shooting as I'd planned, and I'm open carrying the 1911 in its Talon rig. As usual no one ran out of the store like a headless chicken screaming "HE'S GOT A GUN!" Anyway, I go to refill both of our soda's, fill mine, put it to my right, fill my sis's, put it to my left, and then promptly turn and proceed to elbow the soda all over the floor, counter, and my 1911.
I think I was about a million times more worried about the fact that, "oh my god, people just saw me do that, what a dumbass!" than I was about the fact that I am now standing in the store patting down myself and my carry rig with a rag. No, neither the lady who brought me a rag nor the other two store employees said anything about the gun. People rarely do and that's fine by me.
Why am I writing this? Because I thought my embarrassment might amuse you.

Exploiting tragedy
Right on cue the liberal moonbats here in Delaware are blooddancing in the wake of the Norwegian tragedy and conjuring up the "right-wing extremist / terrorist" boogeyman. It's good for a laugh. They want SO badly for that boogeyman to be real, they thirst for bloodshed that would confirm their beliefs.
And of course American Tea party or even Libertarian "right wing extremists" simply havent been violent nor have they committed acts of terrorism, no matter how badly folks like Jason or the rest of the Liberals and liberal MSM wishes they were. It is, of course, projection. It is the left who are violent. It is the left who calls for the death of their political opponents. They're simply ascribing their own words and beliefs upon those they see as the "enemy." It's what the left does.
I feel for the Norwegian people, I really do. That said, the truth remains. People who want to kill will find a way, no matter what the gun laws are. It can happen anywhere. Even in a homogenous, generally non-violent culture there will be evil men. If those evil men intend to kill innocent people they will find a way and will only be stopped by force. It's an inconvenient truth, but a truth nonetheless.

Beer & Butts!
I don't mean to be an ass, but when you're asking $15 for one bottle of beer you're full of it. That's more than double what I paid at the brewery.
On the other hand, a nice, smokin' butt is always a good thing, especially when I know Allah says the Jihadists can't have any.
In all seriousness the food is quite good. Nice portion sizes and an excellent beer selection. They even had Dogfish Head 75 minute on tap the other day, but when I went to order it they were all out. :( I've been wanting to try the 75 Minute for a while now.

Check for zombie anti-bodies
Man wakes up after 21 hours in morgue fridge! Holy crap! Is he really alive or just undead? This is why you carry folks, because you never know when there might be a zombie in the morgue fridge. Zoinks!
We're all felons
We just don't know it yet. Case in point, Florida state law makes anyone who has ever shot at an indoor range in FL a felon.
No worries Robb, I'm sure there's an exemption buried somewhere in the state statutes for those not wearing pants!
I'm sure a good portion of the folks on my blogroll have committed a felony at some point in their lives without even realizing it, and we're talking about folks who are far more law-abiding than the general population.
Lawmakers are stupid, and their full-time job is to make law. As a result we the citizenry are entangled in a mess of moronic, unintelligible laws that no person could possibly know or understand.

Quote of the day - CFPB
"the most powerful regulatory agency that's ever been put together"
- Head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce commenting on Obama's newly created Federal agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Yep, because a brand new Federal bureaucracy is exactly what we need when this country is mired in an amount of debt unheard of in U.S. history. Yes, another agency full of government workers and political appointees and which will continue to grow and receive perpetual budget increases at the expense of the American taxpayer. Worse yet, the CFPB does not appear to be hampered by any government oversight.
A new bureaucracy means one more agency that must, by nature, continue to expand it's power and scope as justification for increased budgets and funding. Before long they'll have a budget that's 10 times what it is today. Hell, they'll probably have their own police powers and law-enforcement branch and will be buying short-barreled breaching shotguns on the taxpayer dime to "protect" consumers.
This is liberalism in a nutshell folks. More government power, more government regulation, more bureaucracy and government spending = A good thing. Why? Because it means more control over individuals.
Aside from NASA, numerous federal agencies have seen major budget increases since Obama took office. Just look at the Dept. of Education. Hell, the "Competing and Winning in the World Economy" budget for FY2012 (PDF Warning!) is asking for $10.6 Billion to create an "interoperable 4G wireless network for public safety." Yes, they want almost $11 billion for the government to create a 4G wireless network. The plea of necessity? The ever popular "public safety" plea.

This is a joke, right?
I mean, it has to be a joke. Michelle Obama couldn't possibly be on this list unless the author was joking.

Criminals & Violent Encounters
Some of you may already know this, but the FBI has conducted studies about criminals and violent encounters with law enforcement. It is titled "Violent Encounters: A Study of Felonious Assaults on Our Nations Law Enforcement Officers." Much of what is contained in this study directly contradicts the lies spouted by anti-gun groups and by anti-gun politicians like President Obama and AG Holder. Much of it reflects that which the pro-gun, pro-rights crowd has been saying for years.
You really should read the whole thing, however several things stuck out at me from chapter 4 of the study. I'll bullet them below.
* None of the offenders regularly carried their handguns in a holster
* Offenders employed knives to kill members of the general public more than they used rifles and shotguns combined.
* Of the 33 handguns used to assault officers in the current study, 32 were obtained illegally
Links to study are here
So, from point number 1 we know that these folks are not OC'ers nor CCW holders. From number 2 we know that not only is the weapon used largely irrelevant to public safety, but that "Assault weapon bans" are completely and utterly useless. Hell, based on the findings perhaps we need "common sense knife control" instead of gun control. From number 3 we know that, surprise, surprise, violent criminals aren't getting guns legally.
Rest assured, when you hear bigots like Jack Markell or ANY chief of police tell you that some gun control measure is needed for "trooper safety" they are lying to you. The kind of asshole criminals who will shoot at cops don't give a lick about all of the strict gun control laws they're breaking.*
*Straight from page 10 in chapter 4 you have offenders explaining two simple things that anti-gunners refuse to acknowledge. One, that it is trivially easy for criminals to get guns on the streets (as easy as getting drugs one offender said) Two, and I quote "Fuck gun laws. I never gave a shit about the gun laws that are on the books."
La La La
This song is catchy as hell, on the radio quite a bit, and I can't get it out of my head. Damn earworm. La La La.
If only there were a law....
....against carrying a handgun on school property without a Delaware CCDW permit. Oh wait, there is a law against that, so how did this 15 year old boy get tackled and robbed at gunpoint on elementary school property?
See? Gun control works!....

Harry Potter Geeks
My sister is one of them. You know you're a geek when you do this to protect your cake. Hint. A gun is better protection than some silly spell, sis. ;)

Officer Daniel Harless
Here's my prediction. The rage-a-holic, crazy man with a gun threatening to kill a fellow citizen / CCW holders will not end up being charged with any crime. Internal affairs will likely end up firing him and perhaps imposing some kind of meaningless punishment on him. He will not serve jail time. In fact, how much do you want to bet he ends up on some SWAT team for any of the myriad of Federal agencies that have one of their own these days?
Funny, us CCW holders are always seen as the ones who are potentially dangerous, angry, violent, volatile and just itching to shoot someone, yet the crazy man with a gun in this encounter was the cop. Us OC'ers are viewed as dangerous because we don't have a uniform and badge that puts people at ease. I'd feel more at ease around a group of 50 people in my county randomly picked from the phone book than I would around Officer Harless or someone like him.
I'll post my opinions of this video and the fallout later, when I've had the opportunity to watch it with the audio on. For now I'll just say that this the worst conduct by an officer during a CCW traffic stop that I've ever seen. Officer Harless was so off his goddamn rocker I'm surprised he didn't just pull his duty weapon and shoot the guy, or beat him half to death for no reason.

Ban Dumbells
One of the more gruesome murders in Delaware history was committed by Charles Cohen in 1988 in my hometown. In November of 1988 Cohen brutally murdered both of his parents. Anti-gunners would have us believe that guns, not violent people, are the key component to society's violent crime problem. The Charles Cohen case was a pefect example of just how wrong the gun control advocates are.
"Cohen was 23 when he used a 10-pound dumbbell to repeatedly bludgeon his father, Martin Cohen, into unconsciousness." Afterward, he slit the 58-year-old's throat.
"And then I stabbed him because he was still breathing,"..."I stabbed him until I was sure he was dead."
Next came his mother,
"It didn't take as many strikes to kill her because she was, you know, frail,"
Some people are violent animals. They don't need guns to prey upon people. The only way society can be safe from them is if such animals are locked up or, barring that, average citizens retain the means to stop such heinous crimes from occurring..... with the proper application of hot lead.
The book about the Cohen murders, Fallen Son, was actually quite good. It's worth a read.

Quote of the day - Winning platform
"If an openly gay candidate ran for president on a pro-gun, low-taxes, get-the-government-out-of-my-face platform, I’d not only vote for them, I’d chip in to help redecorate the White House."
- Tam
In the case Tam is referencing the lady is bisexual, but the point remains unchanged.
The major things care about with regards to a politician are as follows. Do you believe in and will you defend my Constitutional rights? Will you curtail the size, scope and power of government and keep it the hell out of my business? (this includes low taxes of course) Are you pro-gun? Do you respect our servicemen and women? Do you have any personal integrity whatsoever?
I don't care one bit whether you like girls, guys, like to lick both the pink lolipop and munch the carpet, or have lifesized, anatomically correct blowup dolls of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson in your bed at night. What you do in the bedroom and who you do it with is none of my concern. Keep your nose out of my bedroom and I'll keep mine out of yours.

A Word on summer tires
I have a set of Hankook RS-2's, which sadly, are not on my car at the moment due to the distributor and wheel manufacturer never having anything in stock within the specs I need. These are max performance summer tires, one step below R-compound tires. The key word here is summer, which is why I found this review rather amusing, or rather, this part of the review.
If you're driving on max performance summer tires in 35-50 degree temps you're going to see a significant drop in grip, which is going to be especially pronounced in rain. Driving on RS-2's in Oregon at the end of October is a bad idea. Driving hard on them in the rain is a bad idea in such conditions, as they're optimzed for dry grip. There's a reason they tell you not to drive on summer tires in temps below 50 degrees.

Quote of the day - Commendable self-defense
“In these instances of justifiable homicide it may be observed that the slayer is in no kind of fault whatsoever, not even in the minutest degree; and is therefore to be totally acquitted and discharged, with commendation rather than blame.”
-Sir William Blackstone - Commentaries on the Laws of England
Plenty of bleeding hearts today would be horrified by Blackstone's words. Plenty of them are shocked when I express happiness or gratitude about the fact that an honest citizen put some violent predator six feet under. They find my callousness about the loss of life abhorrent. The way I see it, if you're living life by initiating deadly force against others you're playing Russian Roulette of sorts with your own life. If you run into an armed victim who has one in the chamber and fights back, hey, you chose poorly and the odds have finally caught up with you. Such is life. Good riddance.
If someone tries to kill or seriously harm you through no fault of your own stopping / killing your attacker is not just an appropriate response to an attack on your life, it is a net gain for society. The recidivism rate of a room temperature violent criminal with a sucking chest wound is 0%.

Starting the Delaware CCDW process
So over this past weekend I got a call from a friend of mine asking if I wanted to go take the dogs out for a walk at Middle Run. I met up at her house, headed to her parents to grab her dog and then head out with her and her mom.
As we're driving I'm thinking "What the hell woman, I thought we were going to Middle Run?" Turns out she wanted to go walking at Middle Run on the other side of RT. 72, which happens to be smack in the middle of a State Park. Since I can't OC in State Park's I had to unholster, unload, and stow the gun in the trunk of the car.
I'm sick of dealing with that kind of crap (not to mention the school zone issue) so I'm starting the application process for my Delaware CCDW permit. Here's a quick rundown of what hoops I'll have to jump through.
1. Publish my intent to apply in the newspaper with my full name and address. (~$80)
2. Get fingerprinted at the State Police. It's by appointment only, Tuesday & Thursday only, 12-6:30. (cost unknown)
3. Passport photos (~$10)
4. Have 5 reference questionnaires filled out by residents of my county.
5. Have application notarized and pay $65 filing fee.
After I do all of that and submit my application it goes to the State AG's office to be reviewed by a DOJ "investigator," then has to get signed off on by Attorney General Biden and by the Superior Court Judge who handles CCDW permits. Assuming that goes through without any problems I'll receive a letter of non-denial from the AG's office, meaning I can now take an approved Delaware CCDW course. (~$200) Once I've sent in notarized proof of training they'll mail me a permit.
The application is interesting in that it asks if you hold any other CCW permits and if you've ever been convicted of an alcohol related offense. It also asks for the name, address & phone number of your employer. It says to be VERY specific when listing the reason you are applying for a permit, yet there's a "restrictions" section for the AG's office to fill out. I'm a bit worried that anything too specific, especially in regards to locations, times, places, could likely earn me a restricted permit.
Oh, and since Delaware is "May Issue" you can go through the entire process and then end up getting called in for a "personal interview" or be denied outright.
Someone explain to me how a permitting process that amounts to the cost of a new gun (~$400) is anything other than an infringement of my rights? It sure seems like a great way to keep a single mom living in a bad area of Wilmington from being able to defend herself outside of her home.
*I'm a bit short on cash right now and have a few major expenses coming up, so I'm just getting things in order and starting the process. I probably won't actually have the application in until sometime after my birthday. Such is life.

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

They'll just take your gun and use it against you
We hear all the time from anti-gunners that you shouldn't bother having a gun for self-defense because criminals will just take it from you and use it against you. Funny thing, because it panned out that way in this home invasion........for the criminal.
That said, if some armed man comes through your window at 4:50 AM it'd be a good idea to have a better means of self-defense than a frying pan. I'm glad this woman had the will to fight back and that she and her roommates are safe.
This case reminds me of my poppop, who several decades ago fought off two home invaders (one armed, one not) with nothing but a baseball bat and a cast iron skillet.

Justice not served
A 19 year old thug and his buddies commit a home-invasion robbery of a 56 year old man with Cerebral Palsy. The victim is shot with a stun gun, beaten with a hammer and stabbed repeatedly. The four degenerate scumbags then leave, dispose of evidence and go to a party.
Their sentences? 15 years and 14 years so far for two of the dirtbags. That's less than I might get for the victimless crimes of simply owning a suppressor or a rifle with a barrel that's an inch too short.
Those with disabilities are some of the most vulnerable in society. Predators prey upon them because they are weak (or seen as such) Three young, able bodied men don't need guns to cause grevious bodily harm to an elderly man with CP, all they need is willingness and a predatory mindset.
There are predators among us. Attempting to disarm them, even if successful, does not change their nature. They do not value your life. They care only about those tangible goods which they can extract from you. You are expendable. When they're salivating over the fact that they've chosen an ideal "weak and feeble" victim, leave them instead running scared, with a heavy load in their pants to slow them down.
Brunson, the suspected ringleader, told investigators that he'd chosen the man because he was weak and feeble. He also admitted that after the attack he thought about going back to "finish him off."
I can honestly say that I wouldn't be opposed to a scenario where Mr. Brunson returned to "finish him off" only to be greeted with .45 hollowpoints to the chest. As the title of Kevin Baker's 2004 post states "It's most important that all potential victims be as dangerous as they can." No other tool makes that a reality like the personal firearm, especially for those with physical shortcomings.

I need this
Why? Because it's quacktastic!
Hell, I need a whole bunch of T-shirts. I think I wear short sleeve polo shirts about 90% of the time.

Women Against Gun Control
Apparently they're a pro-gun group and have a website. Cool. It's always great to see pro-gun women. That said, they need the pantless wonder to do a redesign of their webpage.
Quote of the day - Islamic jihadist asses
"You boys can keep your virgins. Give me hot old women in high heels with asses that forgot to get old."
- Charles Bukowski
Bukowski was obviously talking to Islamic jihadists who hate America when he wrote that. I'll bet those jihadists hate big butts too.

Walther PK380
I handled a Walther PK380 at the Charlotte NRA convention and thought "Y'know, I kinda wanta one of these guns" Before you say "what?!" and chastize me I'll say that I understand the desire is bereft of all logic. There's simply no compelling reason for me to actually buy one of these guns.
Are there things about the Walther PK380 that I find appealing? Sure, otherwise I wouldn't want one. Still, Walther turned what should have been a slam dunk in the .380 market into something that leaves you scratching your head. It's small, ergonomic, fits the hand well, and would work well as a CCW piece, and is priced right, but they totally fubared what could've been a good thing. It is also probably the easiest gun to rack the slide on of any gun I've ever handled, a huge plus for people with limited grip/hand strength.
Seriously. To design a DA/SA gun without any kind of Decock function is just absurd IMO. In order to decock the PK380 you have to load the gun, flip the safety on, then pull the trigger on a loaded gun! The PK380 safety is nothing more than a hammer block which rolls forward when the thumb safety is in the "on" position, physically blocking the hammer from striking the firing pin. It does not disengage the trigger mechanism like the safety on say, a Bersa Thunder. Well the hammer block and the safety lever are made of MIM, and folks are snapping them into pieces.
Now, what happens when someone does this and the safety block breaks but it is not readily apparent (I.E. a bunch of broken pieces don't fall out of the gun) Now the next time an owner decocks the gun the hammer strikes the firing pin and the gun fires. Still, it just dumbfounds me that you would design a gun which is DA/SA, presumably meant to be carried hammer down on a loaded chamber, yet design it without a decocker.

I won't even get into the fact that you need a proprietary key in order to field strip the gun. Sigh.
Canadian Confiscation
If I continue to repeatedly tell the government to "fuck off" they're not going to reason with me. They're not going to send a man in a suit and tie my door and politely ask for my guns. No, at some point in my interaction with them they will send armed federal agents to break into my home, forcefully arrest me, and seize my firearms. That's if they don't kill me in the process.
The truth of the matter is this. At a fundamental level every involuntary interaction that occurs between individual citizens and the government carries with it the implicit condition of coercive force.
There's nothing "voluntary" about this. The government has retroactively made a piece of private property illegal and told owners they have to hand the property over. Offering $1400 doesn't change the fact that the government is confiscating private property without the consent of those who own said property.
Kudos to these 15 brave gun owners. In the end though I suspect they were ordered to relinquish the weapons and did so. The system is rigged.

Advice from an idiot
A Nobel Prize winning idiot, but an idiot nonetheless. Here we have Paul Krugman complaining about the fact that Obama isn't acting liberal enough and isn't doing enough to ruin this country. Krugman's solution it appears is to "SPEND! SPEND! SPEND!" no matter what ails the country and no matter what the obvious and inevitable consequences may be.
And of course liberals like Krugman want to raise taxes to get us out of this mess. Obama wants $1 Trillion in new taxes on top of all the new taxes passed under Obamacare. What happened last time we tried that during a major recession? Hmm. The revenue act of 1932 raised the top marginal tax bracket from 25 to 63% as well as raised the estate tax and corporate taxes. They were then raised further by a myriad of revenue acts throughout the 1930's and early 1940's raising all kinds of taxes throughout FDR's "New Deal" and "2nd New Deal." These included tax hikes on individuals, several corporate tax hikes, surtaxes, and excise taxes on a number of consumer products. Despite this tax revenues did not increase substantially for the entirety of the 1930's.
None of that matters to Keyensians like Krugman, or to most liberals for that matter. They don't even consider that history shows us you can't just raise taxes to increase revenue. Furthermore, they just say "times are different. You can't compare today's economy to the 1930's." It's not a matter of sound economic policy for them, nor is it a matter of looking at the numbers and thinking of rational solutions. No. Liberals (and the Obama Administration) are doing what they always do, engaging in ideological zealotry that fits the definition of "insanity " to a "T."

4 rules illustrated
Over at Robert M's blog.
I find myself doing that with all kinds of things these days, particularly spray bottles. It'll cause non-gunnies to look at you a little weird, but oh well.

Quote of the day - Keynes
"Lenin is said to have declared that the best way to destroy the capitalist system was to debauch the currency. By a continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens. By this method they not only confiscate, but they confiscate arbitrarily"
-John Maynard Keynes - The Economic Consequences of the Peace (1919)
Lenin was right, and through the application of Keynesian "voodoo" economics we are seeing just how accurate Lenin was.

Impossible!
This couldn't possibly have happened at the University of Delaware. I mean students can't carry guns (or any other weapons) and there's a gun free zone forcefield around the campus that keeps bad people with guns out, right?
Quote of the day - blunt
“My position is that anybody who's in favor of gun control is a fucking moron."
- Jackie Mason
I don't entirely agree. Someone can be simply ignorant of the facts. However, if they've been made aware of the facts and are still in favor of gun control then I can agree with the above statement.

Evil is omnipresent
An 8 year old boy got lost walking home in NYC, asked a man for directions and wound up kidnapped and murdered, found in pieces in the man's freezer.
I hate these stories not just for the horrifying violence and loss of innocent life, but for the words of community members, which are always the same.
"Many of the mothers gathered there said the streets are safe enough for a child Leiby's age to walk home alone."
"This is a no-crime area," said State Assemblyman Dov Hikind
"Safe enough" obviously wasn't, nor was this a "no-crime area." This predatory animal proved that those statements are no more than an illusion, as evidenced by his heinous crime.

Open Carry hurts the cause....
Oh wait, except when it doesn't. Nancy OC's to the YMCA and as a result there's now a newbie who wants to learn to shoot. This is how we win! Great job Nancy!
Socialized medicine = slavery
"The strikers tried an ultimatum; they even threatened to stop emergency hospital service. That was it. The government angrily announced that it would start drafting physicians. Once in uniform, the doctors would work when and where they were told to."
- TIME Magazine article Belgium: Physician, See Thyself- April 17, 1964
The doctors were protesting socialized medicine and the response of the government was to force them to practice. why did the government draft physicians into the military? To stop the strike and to keep them practicing medicine in Belgium, as they were fleeing the country in droves.
If the government guarantees "free" healthcare as a "right" to be provided by the government then the providers become slaves. A free healthcare utopia where doctors get drafted into the military to enslave them in the practice of medicine. Sounds like freedom to me. Give the government power over you and they will use it to deny choice and quash individual liberties. Tell me again why anyone would want to give them more control over our healthcare, given that history is ripe with examples of the peril of doing just that?

Thoughts from Mom
While at the beach a few weeks ago I mentioned to Mom that Laura & Chris had been able to CCW while they were visiting. When I explained that they were able to carry in Delaware on a Utah Non-Resident permit she said "you have a Utah permit, so why can't you use it to carry in Delaware?."
I explained in layman's terms the idiotic complexities of reciprocity and residency requirements for CCW. Mom expressed disbelief that, having gone through the identical process Laura & Chris did they could CCW here and I couldn't, despite my being a Delaware resident.
As she put it,
"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It makes no sense."
Yes mom. Is gun control. Is stupid. It's not supposed to make sense. It's simply supposed to make it as difficult as possible to exercise your rights.

Tolerant liberals support banning books
It's interesting to see that not only did Chicagoans support bannning books, they wanted books by conservative and libertarian authors banned. Sarah Palin, unsurprisingly, received the most votes in favor of having her book banned.
I find the entire idea of banning books disgusting because it means the banning of ideas. Then again, if you want your failed viewpoint / ideology to be the dominant one then I can see how you might support book banning.

In need of a smackdown
The jackbooted thugs in the Wilmington police department are in dire need of a smackdown. You should read DELOC member Jager's account of how the WPD has treated him for the terrible non-crime of openly carrying a pistol. There's so much wrong with the situation that it pisses me off just reading it again. He was illegally detained, had his gun stolen and still has not gotten it returned to him.
He is currently suing the WPD, as he well should. I wish him the best of luck. Open Carry is pretty simple here in Delaware. Unless you live in Dover it is legal without any permit to carry so long as you're not a prohibited person. The WPD should damn well know that OC is legal in the city of Wilmington. (and I suspect they do)

Quote of the day - Bias
"It's obvious what happened: big-government bias. To much of the establishment media, a preference for limited government is a dangerous idea. Ergo, its supporters must be dangerous, too. But liberals don't find a preference for big government threatening, so they view its supporters as non-threatening as well."
-A. Barton Hinkle - Writing for Reason magazine
The liberal bias of the leftist media means they will excuse and whitewash the actions of leftists while doing all they can to denigrate anyone who doesn't share leftist ideals. It has been this way as long as I can remember. Media coverage of the Tea Party protests was the perfect example of this. Tea partiers were attacked by the media and portrayed in a violent light regardless of their actual actions. When leftists then exhibited the exact kind of behavior the media had been desperately trying to pin on the "right-wing" Tea Partiers, it was either excused away, downplayed or simply not covered at all.
That's the thing with hardcore leftists. If you threaten their ideological bubble they view it not just as an attack on their ideals, but as an attack on them. Being emotionally driven and generally irrational, they respond with an emotional reponse to this "perceived" personal attack and out comes the vitriol and the violence.
I can't really blame the left. Liberals want to control every aspect of your life. As such, those who espouse a preference for limited government, individual rights and personal autonomy ARE viewed as threatening at a more personal level.

This is Freedom?!
Are you really free when the state can tell you what you may or may not plant in your own yard? Our founding father's would be disgusted at the State's blatant disregard for private property rights in this day and age.
My Poppop recently cut down all the trees in his front yard because he was tired of raking leaves. It doesn't look very nice, but it's a heck of a lot easier for him. Should the government be able to come in and force him to plant trees in his front yard?
It's not like this woman put up a huge statue of a monkey skeet, skeeting on a naked woman's face. No, she decided to grow her own vegetables on her own private property! She planted something more useful than grass. Oh the horror! Seriously folks, we are talking about nothing more onerous than a woman planting a damn vegetable garden, and the State is coming after her for it. Hell, if "suitable" = "common" then a huge statue of a dick in her front yard would be suitable, since half the population has one.
"Code enforcement gave her a warning, then a ticket and now she's been charged with a misdemeanor."
Make no mistake. Interaction with government is inherently hostile, and they will always, without fail, use the coercive power of the state against individuals. They expect you to back down and cowtow, and when you don't they retaliate. That's the nature of the overbearing, petty tyrants we have in government today.
Kudos to Mrs. Bass for not backing down, saying,
"I could sell out and save my own self and just not have them bother me anymore, but then there's no telling what they're going to harass the next person about."
Most people fold. When someone doesn't the government tries to railroad them as they are this lady. Can't have free individuals getting all uppity, thinking they have rights, right?

Quote of the day - No wonder they want you disarmed
I know you're all probably bored of my pointing out the violent left on this blog, but it needs to be done. The spotlight should shine on their bigotry and their calls for violence, particularly given that they're gun control advocates.
UBU's logic fails as usual however. She fails to account for the fact that us Conservatives (I.E. non-leftists) are already armed in far greater numbers than Liberals. I do agree with her on one point though, I think we would see a more violent world if all liberals were armed. Why? Not because of guns, but because of the propensity for violence exhibited by those on the left. (both currently and historically)
She also fails to realize one simple truth. We are not scared of the left.
Back to reality
German property rights vs. multinational socialism
Germany, being the strongest economy among EU nations, is being asked to shoulder the burden of bailing out the failed Socialist state of Greece.
What's happening in Greece is the inevitable consequence of the failed ideology that is Socialism, which makes the comparison to Communist East Germany all the more appropriate.
Thankfully some in Germany are saying "not so fast!" and raising a Constitutional challenge to these bailouts. Good. What the Europeans are doing is insanity. It's mulitnational Socialism. They're transferring the economic wealth of productive, relatively healthy EU nations to failed socialist hellholes. That should work out about as well as the innumerable "bailouts" have towards jumpstarting the U.S. economy (I.E. not at all)
Notice that those defending the bailouts are using the same BS rhetoric Obama used for our bailouts. They're claiming "Everything will be far, far worse unless we do something!" I suspect the Constitutional challenge will fail and what little is left of national sovereignty in Europe will be eroded further to please the EU.
Greece isn't the only problem either. Ireland and Spain are in dire straits as well. Portugal, already the recipient of one IMF / EU* bailout, has now seen its bond rating downgraded to "junk" status. As we've seen in the U.S., the bailouts aren't working. All they're doing is delaying the inevitable while engaging in massive income redistribution as well as the transfer of suffering. If Socialists want to run their countries into the ground I say let them. Long live capitalism and liberty!
*Also, the head of the IMF makes over $500,000 / yr. Yup, that's Socialism for you.

Economic Immunity
The University of Delaware is raising tuition again, this time by 7%. Why is it that these liberal academic institutions act like they are divorced from the economic climate and recessions?
It's crazy to think that tuition has increased 30+% since I graduated.

Good times
You know what's great about being an uncle? Your nephews are excited every time they get to see you and they think you're the coolest person ever.*
Hell, the other day at Mcdonald's they were convinced I was strong enough to literally pick up the table despite it being bolted to the wall and floor. They fight over who gets to hold my hand when we cross the street, who gets to sit next to me in the car etc. etc. It's really quite amusing. The best part of being an uncle? If they get on your nerves you can just hand them off to Mom or Dad.
*I wonder how much longer I'll be able to fool them into believing that.

Step One - Define the problem
If you're going to push for a legislative "fix" for a problem the first step should be to identify said problem, right? Towards that end you should be able to provide evidence that there's actually a problem in need of fixing. If there's not then logic would tell you there's no need for legislation.
Apparently the Delaware legislature doesn't get this. Delaware just passed SB29, making it illegal for Delaware gun owners to carry a firearm while "under the influence." The original bill was awful (I won't get into the specifics since that version didn't pass. It would've made it illegal for me to have a beer or two on the deck at the beach house while my gun was stored elsewhere in the house!), and while the version that passed isn't the worst anti-gun legislation you might see it is still more gun control that is totally unnecessary.
Where is the evidence of problem? Were Delaware's CCDW holders suddenly getting all liquored up, pulling their carry pieces and shooting people? No, and neither were OC'ers. Even if they were doing so such actions are already illegal, making this bill completely useless. This was, to put it bluntly, a solution to a problem that didn't exist. People who would go get hammered and carry a gun in public are going to do it anyway, whether this new law was passed or not. (and even then that's arguably far less dangerous than DUI) Those who go through the time and considerable expense needed to get a CCDW don't tend to get hammered and then go carry. Even assuming they did, concealed means concealed, so how would an officer know they were carrying?
Another thing that bothers me about this bill is that it gives law enforcement probable cause to stop any OC'er he sees leaving an establishment that sells / serves alcohol. Any law that gives the police extra means and incentive to harass lawful open carry in this state is a bad thing. Let's say a cop sees me carry out of Iron Hill Brewery and sees me stumble a bit, or maybe thinks I'm overly jovial that can now be used as suspicion I've committed a crime. Before this bill there was no PC to stop me or detain me. Now I could be stopped under suspicion of carrying "under the influence" due to nothing more than a CP induced limp / gait and poor balance.
The legislation states that anyone convicted under the new law will have their CCDW revoked and cannot get another for a period of 5 years. In reality anyone convicted under the new law will never be able to get a CCDW in this state without considerable political connections. Delaware is a "May Issue" state. They can deny your permit application for any reason they feel like. They've also made conviction for subsequent offenses a felony. Great, just what we need, more felonies for malum prohibitum crimes.
As Unc would say, "Gun Control. It's what you do instead of something."

Sign of the times
I'm on my lunch break looking over the OMB's budget report (PDF WARNING) for fiscal year 2011. (geeky I know...) It contains, among other things, some neat little tables regarding government revenue and expenditures. I've noticed a few things of interest that require a more lengthy post where I'll try not to bore you too much with the numbers. Actually, if it bores you then oh well. It's important!
Here's one big thing that sticks out like a sore thumb and really puts our current debt crisis into perspective.
Table 15.3 on page 352 is "Total Government Expenditures as Percentages of GDP: 1948-2009"
Total government outlays in 2009, Obama's 1st year in office, were 24.7 % of GDP. Looking at the numbers you'll quickly notice that in 2009, Federal spending as a percentage of GDP was higher than it's been in 63 years.
Also, for those "Bush ruined our economy" folks, Table 15.1 shows us that as a percentage of GDP, federal government receipts (money the government took in) were higher in every year of Bush's two terms than they were during Obama's first year in office. (yes, even with those "evil" Bush tax cuts)
So, we see that over Bush's entire time in office tax revenues were higher than Obama's first year AND government spending was lower than Obama's first year. Given that simple observation is it any wonder why we're in a debt crisis?!
Always look at the facts people! They'll usually show you that politicians, especially liberal Democrats, are full of shit.

PSH in Wisconsin
Wisconsin recently became the 49th state to allow some form of CCW, and predictably the anti's are trotting out all of the usual "the sky is falling!" antics. Y'know, they've been spewing the same disproven bullshit for about as long as I've been alive.
It's sad, the anti's protestations are so contrived and unoriginal that I can guess what's going to be said before even reading the article. Clint Eastwood / Wild West reference? Check. The gun will just be taken away from you by criminals and used against you? Check. Average citizens are just too stupid / untrained to effectively use a gun in self defense? Check. The cops won't be able to tell the good guys from the bad guys? Check. Carrying a gun won't save you anyway, so don't bother? Check. Of course, said gun transforms into a magical lifesaving device when in the hands of a cop, naturally.
I particularly liked this bit by Mr. Kane,
"For cops, a concealed carry law turns every traffic stop, public event or encounter with an angry civilian into a nerve-racking test to figure out who might be packing heat and who isn't."
Bullshit. Every cop goes into a traffic stop with a certain level of apprehension. Any person they pull over could have a gun on them and be ready and willing to use it. This is true in DC, where no one can legally carry a loaded gun in the car, and it's true in KY, where legal gun owners can keep their piece in the glovebox. That "nerve-racking test" existed before CCW, and it will exist after CCW. open carry notwithstanding, if a cop encounters someone in public he has no idea whether that person is armed, CCW permit or not.
What do you call someone who repeats the same thing over and over again ad nauseum while being proven wrong each and everytime? I'd call them a moron. As usual we will see that none of Mr. Kane's fearmongering comes true. It never does, and yet anti-gun bigots like Mr. Kane will never stop the fearmongering. Peddling fear and lies is all they have.

4 Years
It's hard to believe, but I've been employed at The Firm for 4 years as of yesterday. Throughout several rounds of layoffs and the massive turnover we have here I have somehow managed to survive and keep my head about me.

Late-Night Open Carry
I just had a 20 minute conversation with an old man on the steps outside of my apartment while taking out the trash.
He was diagnosed with cancer last year at age 56 and had his lymph nodes removed. We talked about the grieving & the mental / emotional process he went through, about surgeries, and most importantly the benefits of a positive attitude during recovery.
Turns out the old man went to Leach School, a preschool for kids with disabilities. I went there as a kid. He also spent time at my hospital, A.I Hospital after being hit by a car when he was young. Small world, and Delaware's a small state.
At no point during my chat with this stranger did he say a word about the Sig P229R OC'd on my left hip. This surprised me given that it was on the side nearest him and right at eye level since he was sitting.
He immediately noticed my limp, which is what began the conversation. there was no reaction whatsoever to the gun, not even a stare or glance. I wish everytime OC'ing had such total non-reactions to the gun.

Inside the anti-gun mind
This article by Dr. Sarah Thompson makes my Sad But Predictable post look like childs play. It's a long read, but essential information in my opinion. You won't be disappointed.
Given some of my personal experiences with vehemently anti-gun folks I think the title, "Raging Against Self-Defense" is unbelievably appropriate. Looking at some of the people I know who are extremely anti-gun, rage (or at a minimum, lack of emotional control) is a common trait.
I'll use my father as an example. I love the man, but the truth of the matter is that he's a narcissist and always has been. He exhibits all of the classic traits of narcissistic rage. If you're familiar with narcissistic rage you know that such a person probably shouldn't own and carry a firearm. You'll note that "shouldn't" does not mean "the government should prohibit." There are plenty of folks I don't necessarily trust with a firearm who are nonetheless legally able to own one. Rights are rights, they don't change or disappear based upon how I "feel" about a particular person exercising them. I can see eyes glazing over and the blank stare as liberals read that last sentence, as it doesn't compute for them.
Some people simply have a short emotional trigger, whereas others are far more rational and emotionally even keel. Personally, I do not want people with poor impulse and emotional control to be carrying firearms. Again, my feelings are not sufficient reason to deny anyone their rights. People with narcissistic rage do not respond to situations in the same way that you or I would. They will often act like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum, and it will often be in reaction to something simple and innocuous. The entire situation will then leave you scratching your head and going "what?! WTF just happened?!" Dealing with a narcissist is in many ways a lot like dealing with an unruly, petulant child (sounds like many anti-gunners you know, right?)
Luckily it just so happens that this is a self-correcting problem, since in my experience narcissists and those with narcissistic rage (see President Obama for a good example) tend to be solidly anti-gun and wouldn't want to carry one anyway.
Thompson's piece is one of the best views into the anti-gun psyche that I've ever read. In order to combat the anti-gun mindset we must first understand it. We must also, as Thompson explains, understand that there are different types of anti-gunners and some are simply too far gone and/or too close-minded to be reached.

"Give them what they want"
How many times do you hear someone say you should just cooperate with violent thugs and give them what they want? Bullshit. Degenerates who will grab an elderly woman and use her as a human shield have NO respect for the lives of others. Animals with that level of moral bankruptcy should be treated as such by those they intend to harm.

Quick thought on the debt
The current debt talks are discussing cutting roughly $2 trillion from the debt, which currently sits at about $14 trillion, over the next decade. That $200 billion / yr. cut represents a cumulative cut of about 14% off of the current total debt. The Democrats are scoffing at the prospect of cutting that meager amount.
Interest payments on the debt as of 2010 were roughly $200 billion annually. That means even if we get the deficit reduction deal the Republicans want (and Democrats oppose) the cuts won't even cover the current interest on the debt. How are we supposed to start paying down the debt and remain solvent if the supposed cuts and "fixes" won't even cover our interest payments?
Now, consider this rosy scenario. Interest rates are at historic lows thanks to the Feds and the recession. What happens to the debt when those rates go up naturally? What happens to the debt when the Feds decide to raise rates to combat the inflation that results from Obama's spending orgy? That $2 trillion in cuts we've squabbling over? Say goodbye to that when interest rates rise.
Anyone reading this who has a nominal level of intelligence knows what'll happen to the debt if drastic spending cuts aren't made and interest rates rise. Anyone with basic intelligence knows you can't simply raise taxes to fix this. The hole Bush, Obama and liberals in Congress have put us in is just too deep.
It's the spending, stupid! Yet if you listen to CNN and the MSM it's all "ZOMG! We're going to default because of those evil Republicans. There's little talk of the consequences of our current spending orgy.

Sigh
So, so many liberals I've encountered are filled with hatred, prone to violence, overly emotional, and exhibit an astounding distrust and contempt for their fellow citizens.*
*I'm not saying all are like this, but in my personal experience hard core leftists are just plain nasty people.
Given my experiences, both in real life and online I'm not the least bit surprised to see young liberals treating Glenn Beck so badly. I mean C'mon people, Beck is just a political commentator, an entertainer. I can actually understand viewing some politicians with contempt. Hell, I find Obama contemptible given the lack of respect he has for my constitutional rights.
I consider many liberal viewpoints logically and factually wrong, not to mention destructive to this country and to personal liberty. As a result I don't respect many of those viewpoints. That said, I don't hate every liberal nor do I hold any ill will towards someone simply because they like Keith Olbermann or watch MSNBC. I find our President contemptible and I don't respect him, but I don't hate him with the outright vitriol that you see leftists exhibit towards those not like them.

Independence Day
On this day in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was approved by Congress.
Despite the risk of great personal loss, fifty six men signed the Declaration, affirming our freedom from England.
Celebrate today. Have fun, be safe, and remember what today is all about. Remember the sacrifices our founders made, and for the love of god call it "Independence Day" please!
Many of these affluent men would later lose their homes, families, and their personal wealth. All of them were actively hunted down by the British, some paying with their lives, others narrowly escaping.
They knew the enormous risk they were taking, yet each man had the courage to stand on principle in support of individual liberty and a free nation. May we never forget what they sacrificed for future generations. May we never squander our freedoms in the face of tyranny.

Quote of the day - Narcissism
"His philosophy on leadership is “Do as I say, not as I do” and those of us who have brains knows that makes for a very poor leader."
-Baron Barnett on Obama
I couldn't agree with this more, but then Obama is a perfect example of your classic narcissist. "Do as I say, not as I do" is a basic trait of narcissists. They don't take kindly to others (especially those who are "inferior") illustrating the gulf between their words and actions.

Quote of the day - Orwell
"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
- George Orwell
Unless of course you "disrespect" the wrong cop. Don't even get me started on that story or what should've happened to said officer. If someone other than an LEO had done something similar to a handicapped kid he'd be sitting in jail right now and there'd be public outrage.
As a side note, "quote of the day" is nice because it requires almost no effort on my part to post.

Ignorance is bliss
Sometimes I wish I wasn't informed. Sometimes I think it'd be easier to be one of those mindless morons who doesn't know what's going on, watches MSNBC, trusts politicians at face value and thinks the government is their friend. If I was I wouldn't hear about things like the story Alan links to., and if I did I could just deny reality like a good little liberal.
Sadly abuses like this are reality. The government is, quite literally, coming after people who have done no wrong and destroying their lives. Make no mistake about it, if you are an individualist who wants to live free and "off the grid" you are the enemy in the eyes of the government. There's nothing government hates more than free, happy individuals who are free of the shackles of government dependency......so they destroy lives, forcing those very people to become dependent upon government.
The government will 100% support deadbeat bums like this with my tax dollars, yet they'll actively hunt down and squash the freedom of those who aren't freeloaders and who burden no one. Government is force. Wild, unthinking, irrational, unabated, and above all else, destructive. This is what happens when it grows and is not reigned in, as the Nuisance Abatement Teams so aptly demonstrate.
