A 15 year old Middletown High School student was arrested for carrying 3 large knives in her backpack. She apparently told the school psychologist she wanted to hurt another student, removed the knives from her bookbag for a school administrator, and promptly walked out the school, knife in hand.
Gun, knife, bomb, etc. etc. it doesn't matter. This is exactly how well "weapon-free zones" work in reality. They don't. If she had decided she did want to stab the student she'd had a confrontation with he/she would be dead. If she'd decided to bring a gun and shoot up a classroom kids would be dead.
Only two things stopped her from harming others. Her own intentions and later the use of force by a SRO. Gun / knife control didn't stop her. It doesn't work and never has.

Quote of the day - Lions and sheep
"Americans used to roar like lions for liberty; now we bleat like sheep for security.”

Well maybe not all of us, but I sure as hell feel like I'm surrounded by a bunch of bleating sheep sometimes.

Bring it, Hippie!
Dear OWS hippies,
I know some of you are violent, I know the kind of control you want necessitates violence against those who wont fall into line, but hippie please! You don't bring edged weapons to a gunfight.
"you plan 2 fight against the 99 we lop heads off a few white kids you will fall in line"
Lopping off heads only works if you've disarmed us first. Otherwise I don't think you've thought your cunning plan all the way through.
I wonder how many heads he'll be able to lop off while he's got a bunch of sucking chest wounds?
It's always interesting to see folks like this advocate for the slaughter of those they disagree with, particularly since their ideology is responsible for more death, mass genocide, and overall human suffering than anything else in human history.
H/T to Robb
Also, are these OWS Protests the "new tone of civility" the White House and liberal media were so adamant about claiming we needed during the Tea Party protests? If so then the Left is doing a bang-up job of being civil, tolerant and non-violent.

More OWS Irony
This is just too good not to post. The kitchen staff at the OWS protests are protesting because they feel used and taken advantage of by squatters and freeloaders. Welcome to how the rest of us feel under this Administration, folks! Obama's basic strategy is to spend, spend, spend & bailout while demonizing "the rich" and leaving taxpayers with the bill for his continued Keynesian idiocy.
"They’re angry about working 18-hour days to provide food for “professional homeless” people and ex-cons masquerading as protesters."
So basically they're pissed that they're having to bust their asses to support a bunch of opportunistic bums. That's hilarious, since it's pretty much how the rest of America feels about the leftist policies these protesters support.
"A security volunteer added that the cooks felt “overworked and underappreciated.”
Kind of like American taxpayers who keep being told by Obama and his cronies that we need to "sacrifice," right?
"We need to limit the amount of food we’re putting out” to curb the influx of derelicts, said Rafael Moreno, a kitchen volunteer."
The same is true of government handouts, though I suspect these protesters won't recognize the parallels to the very liberal policies they support. The promise of "free stuff" brings these people out of the woodwork.

Quote of the day - punish evildoers
"To prohibit a citizen from wearing or carrying a war arm is an unwarranted restriction upon the constitutional right to keep and bear arms..... If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of constitutional privilege.”
~Wilson v. State - 1878
Indeed. You don't deprive people of their consitutional rights just because some folks misuse them. Such a simple concept yet one that so many cannot grasp.

Derision of OC'ers
I was shocked, absolutely shocked, when I got to the end of this nasty screed against open carry and found that the author was a college professor. No doubt he's a tolerant, open-minded, enlightened member of liberal academia.
Sometimes I can't help but laugh at the ridiculous caricature of OC'ers that anti-gunners like Mr. O'Brien have built up in their minds. That's part of the reason I love to see awesome women like Nancy & Breda OC'ing, because they present a big, fat, "does not compute" for anti-gunners like this professor.

California Long Gun Carry
Laura has a post up about Open Carry long gun protests in San Diego. Watch the video. Even in San Diego I didn't see anyone go apeshit and run & scream to get away from the peaceful, average armed folks.
Quote of the Day - OWS
"Occupy Wall Street’s Finance Committee has nearly $500,000 in the bank, and donations continue to pour in -- but its reluctance to share the wealth with other protesters is fraying tempers."
- From this NY post article
And for even more delicious hilarity, OWS protesters are complaining about freeloaders.

Quote of the day - history of failure
"Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. In area after area - crime, education, housing, race relations - the situation has gotten worse after the bright new theories were put into operation. The amazing thing is that this history of failure and disaster has neither discouraged the social engineers nor discredited them."
Thomas Sowell - Is Reality Optional?
And yet people continue to believe that "what sounds good" will work this time, if only we have "the right people" to implement it. Oh, and people keep voting for "what sounds good." Just look at major inner cities. You have the same type of people instituting the same basic policies over decades with no real improvements for those living in said areas.

Wilmington Murders
Wilmington has recorded its 16th homicide so far this year. Philadelphia, by contrast has had 264 homicides this year. Keep in mind that Philadelphia has 21 times the population of Wilmington. Yes, that means that the city where I work is once again on track to have a significantly higher homicide rate than Philadelphia.
Is it any wonder that one of the welcome signs coming into the city reads "Wilmington. A place tobe kill someone?"
Politically the city is run by liberal Democrats and Mayor Baker is a member of MAIG.

I trust you but.....
"I know lots of people who don’t like guns, or feel uneasy about them…but they’re fine with ME and guns, and like having ME around because they know as a friend I would do all I could to protect them. That’s fine and awesome….its the people who don’t like guns and think I shouldn’t either that are the problem."
-Weer'd Beer'd
I know plenty of folks who fit into that first category as well. These are people who, even if they don't support my rights, know me as a "good guy" are are thus OK with my carrying.
I know a family friend who is quite weirded out by guns. When I loaned my mother my laptop and she had it while visiting, said friend gasped upon seeing that the background on my computer was a big picture of a Sig P228. Here's a woman who is visibly agitated by a picture of a gun and yet she's OK with my OC'ing in her home, while out walking the dogs etc. She's gotten used to it and even though guns weird her out she's pro-carry.
I find that for the most part any trepidation people might have about my being armed around them has little to do with me. It's the reaction of others (cops specifically) that they are worried about. A friends daughter asked me why I had the gun on my hip like that and not under my shirt. She found it ridiculous that the law said I could carry like that but need a permit to hide it. "Aren't you worried someone will freak out and call the cops?", she asked
My roommate, although not weirded out by guns, is much the same way. He's perfectly OK with my carrying. Hell, I carry around the apartment all the time. It's when you start talking to him that it becomes clear he doesn't feel the same way about society at large. It's a "I trust you but......all those other people are scary and we need to make it harder for them to get guns." This of course conveniently ignores the fact that doing so imposes those same restrictions upon me, but I digress.
Hell, even someone like my father, who is pretty solidly anti-gun, has at times responded favorably to my owning & carrying one. Despite his personal aversion to guns I dare say he was comforted to know that I was carrying the entire way to Ohio last month. Even at my age he worries when his son goes on solo road trips. It's cute.
That's part of why we win. Even people like my dad can soften their views somewhat. Even he will begrudgingly trust me with a gun, despite the fact that he wouldn't trust himself. Even folks like him, while anti-gun, are not politically motivated anti's who will spend time and resources pushing for new gun control measures. There will always be people who just plain don't like guns. While I'd prefer they were firmly on our side, most of them don't care enough to be a real threat to my rights.

Poor, Poor OWS Protesters
Zuccotti Park residents are finally fed up with the BS from these OWS protestors. As one resident put it "They are defecating on our doorsteps."
You know, I'd be pissed off too if a bunch of dirty hippies decided to start squatting in my neighorhood, harassing people on their way to work, and creating filthy, loud, and violent conditions in what was once a nice area. NYC should kick them the hell out, as a few other cities have already done.
Also, in Occupy protests in Melbourne, Australia, police removed buckets full of urine from tents, and occupy protests in Rome turn violent. This is my shocked face.
Laura and Breda have more on the appalling behavior taking place at these protests. Didn't see this kind of stuff at Tea Party protests, and if we did the media would've been all over it.

Zombies!
My little sister joined a community service sorority. They have to do a minimum of 20 hours per semester. As part of her community service at the tail end of this month, she'll be dressing up as a zombie for a haunted house and scaring patrons.
Who knew that being a brain-eating zombie was a service to the community? I guess it depends on whose brains are getting eaten.

Occupy Delaware
From a Occupy Delaware protest
Here's the problem with folks like this. They're NOT saying "I'm rich, tax me." They're saying "I want my taxes raised, so raise them on me and on all those other folks too." Then they act indignant when those "other folks" don't want their taxes raised. This "rich kid for redistribution" is advocating for the redistribution of other peoples' incomes.
It's one thing to protest because you want the government to leave you the hell alone. It's quite another to protest because you want the government to enforce your morals by force, take from those you've decided you don't like, and give you "free" shit.
I think NJT captures that perfectly here.

Oh Noes! A Terrorist!
It seems Todd G. had a little visit from the Feds not too long ago and local cops because some delivery driver had a bad case of PSH.
Jesus! I can remember getting cases of ammo and some mags shipped to my college dorm room. They couldn't ship directly to your room, so it went to the commons building where you had to go pick it up. I can remember picking up large boxes that were clearly ammunition, boxes that had "Remington Arms Co." in big letters on them and no one gave me any crap.
Getting gun stuff shipped to my college dorm probably wasn't the smartest thing ever, but it was the most convenient. Maybe I was just lucky?

Stupidity at my Alma Mater
The University of Delaware has developed a new "Campus Shooter PSA"
"The 20-minute PSA encourages students to adopt a survival mindset incorporating awareness, preparation and rehearsal of protection tactics. It also includes tips and examples of what to do in case a shooter situation arises, including strategies for escape, hiding and taking out the assailant."
What's the first rule of a gunfight? Bring a gun. What's the best way of "taking out the assailant?" With a gun. I think we all know that encouraging CCW on campus among students is not among the things the University recommends. In fact, UD prohibits the carrying of all weapons, including guns.
I find the quotes from University students especially troubling. Their heads seem to be firmly planted in the sand.
This from Senior Allan Arishi
"I might consider looking at it, but I'm not sure," "I don't think a lot of people are walking around with guns."
Sure their are Allan. Not too many good guys with guns, since the University sees fit to disarm them, but there's certainly violent criminals on campus with guns and other weapons. I was on UD's campus this past weekend. Were I a bad guy intent on harming people I could have concealed a few pistols, walked all over campus, into lecture halls, been let into dorms etc. and no rules or regulations would've stopped me. Hell, an old friend of mine managed to do it pretty easily. Obviously the law and UD's prohibition on guns didn't stop him from carrying.
If you want to know how easy it'd be for a violent criminal or a campus shooter to do harm, that's it. Have a gun, walk right through utopian "gun free zone" forcefield surrounding campus, start shooting unarmed students.
I know there were problems with both Townies and with violent criminals from Wilmington preying on college kids in Newark because it's a target-rich environment. I had a hallmate freshman year who was robbed by two career criminals from Wilmington. These guys had long, violent pasts and they put him in the hospital without use of a gun.
When I say these kids have their heads in the sand I am not kidding. Here's a piece from the very same Student paper about an armed robbery on Cleveland Ave. You can actually go on the web and get a calendar view of crimes reported by UD public safety with details. Violent crime happens in Newark. Anyone who reads The UD Review regularly knows this.
It seems as if Liberal academia wants to do anything and everything to protect and empower students against violent crime except, you know, actually empowering them. They will suggest everything but that which is most needed and insist on groupthink and treating adults as children. Obviously I haven't seen the video, but I am almost positive it doesn't include positive defensive tactics nor suggest gun ownership and CCW as a viable defensive option.

Quote of the day - mass movements
"The quality of ideas seems to play a minor role in mass movement leadership. What counts is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard of the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world. "
-Eric Hoffer
Hoffer's got that right. If the quality of ideas played a significant role then history wouldn't be rife with instances of Leftists coming to power and subsequently committing atrocities against the people because their ideas necessitated doing so.

Those violent, unruly, uncivil Tea Party protestors
Just look at those violent, unruly, right-wing Tea Partiers, shitting on cars, making a mess of the protest sites, charging the police and assaulting security guards who try to keep them from storming a museum.
Wait!? You mean these weren't right-wing Tea Partiers, they were Leftists? Inconceivable.
Oh, and I don't recall anyone having to pay Tea Party protestors to show up or a black man not being able to speak at a Tea Party protest. Yet somehow the Tea Party is racist, uncivil, even outright violent. Funny, because it would seem that everything the liberal media has said about Tea Party protests is actually true with regards to protests on the Left.

I have seen the future
and I'm scared too.
I thought things were bad enough when I was a kid and mom wouldn't let me buy a BB gun. It's disturbing how bad things are these days. Don't coddle your kids, and don't let the State do it for you.
Also, if there's one hard and fast truth of being a kid it's this. Kids will find a way of doing ridiculously stupid, dangerous, and totally awesome things for fun. Teach them right from wrong, help them when they need it, and let em' live life. If your kids aren't finding potentially hazardous things to do outside then they aren't being kids.

Today, October 18th, is No Beard Day. Shave it off Weer'd!
What are big brothers for...
if not to be a bad influence on their younger siblings? My parents are not too keen on my little sister being a beer conneseuir. They think it's unlady-like. Her ex-boyfriend was the one that got her to like good beer. Me? I'm just an enabler. It seems that's something I'm good at :)
Our birthday's are in the same month. I buy her beer, she buys me beer. That's the way it's been for the past few years. There's also a Dogfish Head beer tasting event going on next month in a sooper sekret location. We'll be there!
And no, I don't mind putting terrible pictures of me on the internet.

University of Delaware security
The UK model of crime prevention.
This was on Academy st. near Pearson Hall.

Ah liberals of academia. They believe inanimate objects both cause crime AND prevent crime... Or maybe the sign is meant not as a crime deterrent but as a notification of Orwellian activities? Who knows.
Yes, I can legally OC around the University. No, I was not carrying on the sunny Saturday afternoon when this pic was taken.
There were also girls in bikini's playing volleyball. No, I did not take pictures of that, even though it's an odd thing to see in October.

Quote of the day - Socialism
"They cannot do the same. A socialist hellhole requires everyone to buy into the system. Individuals, even just a handful, will dismantle everything. Thus, their ‘peaceful’ society is based on the outright murder of anyone who doesn’t conform. That’s not peace nor has it ever been about peace. It’s all about controlling others."
- Robb Allen
Robb is right. Leftists, progressives, collectivists, socialists, whatever you want to call them are not peaceful. Their utopia is predicated upon the ability to force you and I to conform to their utopian ideals. If this cannot be done peacefully (and it cannot) then it will be done by force, as has been the case with Leftists throughout history. The history of the left is filled with disarmament, murder and genocide, all in the name of achieving "utopia." Anyone who tries to convince you that Leftists are peaceful is full of it.
Scratch a Leftist and you'll find violence, or at least acceptance of and the advocating of violence for political means. Their goals cannot be achieved without force.

A mental disorder
You often hear the phrase "liberalism is a mental disorder." While I don't entirely disagree with the statement I do think it's a crass overgeneralization.
Sometimes however, I see things that make me think "this is the embodiment of that phrase."
This is one of those times. MSNBC's Ed Schultz says Republican Presidental candidate Herman Cain is pandering to white, republican racists. Ah yes, an intelligent black man espouses set of values and beliefs that are not in lockstep with typical liberal ideology, therefore he must be "pandering to white Republicans out there who don't like black folks"
He's also magically decided that the term "Break" is somehow racist, and brought on some uber liberal talking heads to explain to us mere mortals why the phrase "it will break him" is racist.
As for whether racism is responsible for unemployment, violent crime, etc. in the black community, I don't see how anyone could honestly look at history and claim that it is. To make such a claim one must abandon logic entirely.
Could you imagine the uproar if some talking head in 2008 had claimed Barack Obama was pandering to white racists?
*For the record I'm not a big Herman Cain fan.

Local PSH
Oh my god! A MAK-90 Sporter Assault Rifle and 7.62x39 Armor Piercing Rounds! Oh the horror!
"Officers from the Operation Safe Streets then searched the vehicle and recovered a MAK-90 Sporter assault rifle containing armor piercing 7.62 mm rounds and another box of ammunition containing 9mm rounds."
Surely we need to ban these evil, evil guns and evil armor piercing rounds! Someone could get hurt!
Of course the suspect was a prohibited person. I'm sure you're all shocked at that little revelation.

CBC is Racist
The Congressional Black Caucus openly admits they're treating Obama different solely because of his race. That's racist, yo!
“If (former President) Bill Clinton had been in the White House and had failed to address this problem, we probably would be marching on the White House,” “There is a less-volatile reaction in the CBC because nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president.”
In other words, the only reason the CBC won't criticize Obama and "march on the White House" is because the President is black. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be ashamed of these bums.
Hey, at least it's nice to see racists plainly admit their racism. It's refreshing, especially when those who traditionally cry "racism" out themselves as the racists.
Also, the CBC has a "civility caucus?" Coulda fooled me given the recent statements of its members. Referencing lynchings when talking about political opponents doesn't sound very civil to me, but then what's considered "civil" for the CBC is a completely different standard than what's "civil" for opponents of liberalism.

Friday Earworm
A song from my childhood. It's bananas and apples, apples and bananas!
Quote of the Day - Worry about ordinary citizens
"I understand that and that weighs toward allowing guns. Agreed. But think of other situations, in which there's no one who comes in with criminal intent, planning a massacre or whatever. It's just a bunch of people who get each other wound up and they get crazy and somebody gets mad and it escalates suddenly. I'm afraid of people in that situation taking out guns. "
- Ann Althouse, responding to a comment stating that "gun free zones" are merely target rich environments which will disarm good guys but not deter someone intent on killing.
Ah, Althouse resorts to the tired, old, "if there are guns around people will get in arguments, get mad, pull em' out and start shooting." Show me ANY statistical proof that this is a problem among those who CCW, or OC for that matter. It's one of those screeds anti-gunners have been bleating about for decades, yet it doesn't happen.
Furthermore, the kind of situation Althouse imagines could be used as justification for banning guns anywhere, since such situations could conceivably occur anywhere and at anytime. Should my right to carry be denied anytime I invoke my right of assembly?
Look, if people are going to get worked up and resort to outright physical violence against oneanother then you have a people problem, not a weapon problem. I've been in a small number of situations where through no fault of my own I had a raging, angry lunatic in my face, screaming at me, fist raised threatening to hit me. I was concealing a firearm. Despite those actions, and despite being very angry myself I at no time felt compelled to respond in kind, escalate the situation, or pull my firearm.
Give a bunch of emotional, leftist, adult children with self-control issues and narcissistic tendencies all firearms and get them in a large group and you might have some problems. Take 200 people like the guy in my example above, who fly off the handle into a rage at a mere perceived slight or threat to their authoritah and you might have a problem. Most folks like that are anti-gun and tend not to be the type who have CCW's or OC. That said, with folks like that in large groups you have a potential violence problem whether they have guns or pointy sticks, and as Van Hollen pointed out, those folks could just as simply CCW illegally sans permit.
Hell, I'm pretty sure us gunbloggers are more than capable of getting each other wound up and "getting crazy" and yet somehow when a bunch of us get together there's not bloodshed. I've ridden in a rental car with Weer'd and Jay G. for christsakes. That much crazy, that much rage, and yet no one got shot. Get Breda & Laura around and there's likely to be much giggling, snorting, and maybe some good, clean hobobashing, but no whipping out of guns for nefarious purposes.

Oh No! A gun in the snack aisle
Run for your lives!
I wonder, how would this guy react if he was walking around Rehoboth Beach, DE and he saw two men or two women kissing.
He says we shouldn't do things that are "outrageous and irrational" and "anti-social" and proclaims that OC'ing in the snack aisle "smacks of paranoia."
Yes, the man who reacts with "OMG! He's got a GUN!!" upon seeing someone OC'ing but otherwise just shopping and minding their own business is the one calling the OC'er paranoid. Ah, don't you just love projection?
Outrageous, irrational, anti-social, paranoid, all because a fellow citizen exercises his rights in a manner he finds disapproving. His position sounds virtually indistinguishable from a typical anti-gunner complaining about Glocks, AK's, or evil hollowpoint bullets.
Sometimes we are our own worst enemies when it comes to gun owners like this.

Give me free stuff
Give me free shit. Pay my tuition! Why? Because I want it. Oh, and if I don't get what I want I'll protest and whine like a spoiled little brat. This is Socialism embodied and completely unsurprising given just who make up the bulk of these "Occupy ____" protestors.
It's also ridiculously ironic, given how much money corporations give to scholarship programs every year. (not to mention all the folks they employ) How many people would not be able to go to college were it not for "the rich?" He might want to try complaining to his university about tuition. If they're anything like my Alma Mater they just raise tuition like crazy every single year no matter what the economy is doing. That's not Wall Street's fault.
You know what? I want a free house. Nothing fancy, a small, simple place in Fairfax off of 202 would do. I think I'll go to an Occupy Delaware protest to complain that none of the rich bankers in my state have bought me a house..... Oh, and a lifetime supply of bacon & Dogfish Head. I want it, so give it to me!
Where is the "Obama is gonna pay my rent" woman? She'd fit right in!

Unpossible shooting
Eight people killed in a shooting in California, and the murderer was wearing body armor. A lot of good all of the gun control in #1 Brady ranked California did. Sure, the State helped make sure they were defenseless, but that's about it.

Quote of the day - Gang of men
"The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods."
- Henry Louis Menken
Bastiat described it as legal plunder. Legal plunder by gangs who rule by force and take by force what isn't theirs to take.

Irksome
"Pro-gun" folks who are really anti-gunners are the worst kind of folks to have on your side. I'd rather have an enemy that's at least somewhat honest about their disdain for my rights than someone like Ann Althouse. People who own guns, or think guns are cool, but think we need all manner of restrictions on "other people" are exactly the sort I find reprehensible. It's a smarmy, elistist, "guns for me but not for thee" attitude.
Imagine if she'd said, " I'm pro-women's suffrage, but a woman belongs in the kitchen. I worry about what might happen if she spends her time in the voting booth instead."

America! He found it!
Today a sauced up Christopher Columbus got lost leaving Spain, ended up in America and proceeded to kill off an indigenous population. Bang up job there Chris! May we all be so fortunate in our incompetence. I mean hell, it's not everyday you get an entire day named after you for such a colossal fuckup.
The rich should pay their fair share
We constantly hear President Obama repeat this classic class warfare line. I'm not going to discuss the ridiculousness of such a statement, or just who determines "fair share" but I am going to refer you to something Bob S. posted.
Obama's tax returns for 2009 and 2010
Here's 2010
"Obama reported $1,795,614 of total income, which consists mostly of his salary as president ($395,188) and proceeds from the sale of his books ($1,382,889). Obama also itemized his deductions, reporting deductions for state income taxes, property taxes, mortgage interest and charity. The Obamas paid federal income taxes of $416,734, roughly 23% of their total income. Obama also contributed to the maximum to a pre-tax retirement plan based his self-employed book proceeds."
The Obama's paid roughly 33.3% in federal income taxes in 2009. That dropped to roughly 23.3% in 2010. What happened to "the rich need to pay their fair share?" What happened to "we all need to share in the sacrifice"? If the country is in such dire straits that we all have to sacrifice then why did the "sacrifice" of his own family drop by 10%?

They want cake
My fellow American's are unreal! They want that which they cannot have. That's the problem with massive entitlement programs. They breed dependency and a sense of "gimme, gimme, gimme" entitlement. Imagine how much better off the U.S. economy would be if you could keep 8% more of your earnings each year and your employer could keep the 8% he pays out of your payroll tax?
Social security is nothing but a legalized ponzi scheme. It was legalized theft instituted by a power hungry Socialist in the White House. Old follks who've paid in all their lives now feel entitled to get something back, while young folks feel cheated, knowing damn well they're not going to see returns in old age.
The question is, how do you dismantle such a system without pissing off large voter blocks? How do you do it without totally screwing one group of Americans? No one wants to do what should be done, what needs to be done, because doing so would be political suicide.

Find your place at the back of the bus
How nice to see the Leftist Occupy Wall Street protestors being openly sexist and racist. You're a white man, eh? Move your ass to the back of the bus.....err line.
I guess to Liberals some animals are more equal than others, and the pigmentation of one's skin is more important than what he might have to say. Ah, the open, tolerant, progressive Left, making decisions and judging people based on character rather than immutable, inherent characteristics. Clearly we've transcended race, just like all these liberal Obama supporters told us we would! Dr. King would be so proud!....
Imagine the uproar in the MSM if white men were deliberately given speaking preference over women & racial minorites at Tea Party rally. If that would be unacceptable then why not this? Why the double standard?

Quote of the day - violent leftists protest
"What they did is they counted. They actually had a countdown — 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 — they grouped together, they joined arms and they charged the police. They attacked the police. They wanted to get into Wall Street, they wanted to occupy Wall Street."
- NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly on the Occupy Wall Street protests the Left is having right now.
How long did I have to hear every talking head on the news exclaim how violent the Tea Party protestors were, when in fact there was no actual violence?
Also, you have to love the picture they used of the protestor with the sign reading, "I could lose my job for having a voice." If he has a job why is he there instead of working? Also, I could lose my job for "having a voice" too. Free speech is just that, but that doesn't mean my speech can't end up having a negative impact on my employment.

Why I support campus carry
I tend to ground my arguments against gun control on the Constitution, facts, and basic logic, since the positions of anti-gunners fail on those merits alone. That said, the obvious human component that goes along with the anti-gun crowds denial of rights should not be overlooked.
That denial of rights, and the creation of arbitrary, feel-good bullshit like "gun-free zones" causes immediate harm to those who would otherwise retain a means of self protection. That is why stories like this one make me so angry. I'm nearly as angry with gun control folks as I am with the actual criminals. They have blood on their hands in cases like this.
Were it not for their BS restrictions Amanda Collins wouldn't have been disarmed and at the mercy of a violent rapist that night. What's more, another young woman, Brianna Denison, might very well still be alive today if Ms. Collins had not been denied the means to defend herself. Instead one young woman is dead and another has had to suffer through the kind of violent ordeal that no woman should ever have to. This is the world anti-gunners want for us, for all of us.
As Ms. Collins said,
"I don't understand why (the state) trusts good, responsible people to be able to have their firearm across the street, and as soon as they cross an arbitrary line, they somehow lose all reason and ability to be able to be competent with that responsibility. It makes no sense to me at all."
It makes no sense, but then it's not meant to. We're not meant to understand. For the anti's it's about keeping those icky guns out of as many places as possible, and if that means they have to be bigoted, stomp on rights, or imperil the lives of students like Collins then so be it.
I often wonder what gun control supporters would say if they were face to face with someone like Amanda. I doubt they'd say anything, being too scared or too cowardly to defend their position.

Re-education, beheading and the violent Left
"I first would allow the guilty bankers to pay, you know, the ability to pay back anything over $100 million [of] personal wealth because I believe in a maximum wage of $100 million. And if they are unable to live on that amount of that amount then they should, you know, go to the reeducation camps and if that doesn't help, then being beheaded," Barr said with a straight face
Hmm, so Barr hates capitalism and personal property. She thinks guilty bankers should be "allowed" to pay back anything they earn above her arbitrarily set wealth cap. She then claims that "guilty bankers"* should be sent to "re-education camps" and, failing that, beheaded.
Oh boy! Could you imagine if someone even loosely affiliated with conservatives or the Tea Party had said anything similar about any liberal group? When members of the political left call for the violent death of those they don't agree with it's just no big deal. I suppose that might be because they advocate violence against their political opponents with such regularity.
*I.E. evil, evil, capitalists!

Steve Jobs
After hearing the news of Steve Jobs' passing I decided to listen to his Stanford Commencement speech (on my iphone!) Then, instead of blogging it I took his words to heart, got up off of my ass, and did something constructive.
Steve is right, time is limited and there's so much more you could be doing besides sitting around, iPhone in hand, writing stuff on the internet. This is going to sound trivial, but I have to say that going for a 2 mile run and then spending an hour in the gym was a significantly better use of my time than what I would have done.
So, instead of posting the quote I was going to put up last night, I'll just refer you to Breda, who posted what I was going to.
Rest in peace Steve. Your dedication, drive, and contribution to the world will never be forgotten.

Quote of the day - slush fund
"The DoE isn’t operating a stimulus program. It’s running a slush fund for Democratic donors."
Ed Morrisey via HotAir.
It certainly looks that way doesn't it? Solyndra gets a fast-tracked loan while their major private investor is a Democratic / Obama donor. Now we see a host of other "green" loans going to companies whose executives directly contributed funds to President Obama and top-level Congressional Democrats.
These "green" government loans aren't being based on tangibles like financial sustainability, they're being handed out based on who gave the most "green" to Democrats. They're pay-offs to Democratic donors. Isn't that exactly the kind of thing Obama said wouldn't happen in his Administration?

I am so sick of Race
So Rick Perry occasionally leases a plot of land that was once known as "Niggerhead" and had the word written on a rock. Apparently to some this is proof that he's "racist" or, if you ask black racists like Samuel L. Jackson, proof that the entire Tea Party is racist.
I was going to write a long post* about all of the recent race issues and claims of "racism" running rampant in the media and political dialogue these days, but I'm honestly just sick and tired of hearing about it. I'm sick and tired of everything being racially charged. I'm sick and tired of "racism" being used as a political bludgeon by the Left. More than anything I'm disappointed that in this new age of our first black President this country can't have anything even resembling an honest, open discussion on race or any race-based issue.
Is this what Martin Luther King would have wanted? A hyperpolarization of racial issues and outright dismissal of the novel idea that we should look at our fellow Americans based upon their character and not their skin color.
Looking at the political dialogue it seems to me that this country is more racially divided and racially sensitive than we were before Obama's post-racial age. I see wild accusations of racism and uncle-tomism being thrown around. I see people immediately being offended, crying "racism" and failing to intelligently evaluate statements on their merits. I see race and racism consistently being used as a political tool. What I don't see are any attempts to have calm, rational discussions on race in this country. More than anything that just makes me sad and not particularly hopeful for better race relations in America moving forward.
Race doesn't matter, or at least it shouldn't matter. We insist on making it matter, on unnecessarily inflating it into something it is not, and we place too much emphasis on racial identity. As long as we continue to do that we will never get past race and realize Dr. King's vision for this country.
And for the record, I wouldn't vote for Obama or any politician like him, whether they were white, black, purple or rainbow colored.
*and would ya look at that, this post turned out fairly long in its own right.

We are winning
First Wisconsin goes from having no CCW provision to being a shall-issue state, now the city of Green Bay decides not to ban guns from city buildings (Go Packers!)
City Alderman Theisman had it right when he said,
"We have people that have gun phobias, that’s all we have here.”
Indeed, and they're massively outnumbered by pro-gun folks, even in Wisconsin.

Quote of the day - Liberal beliefs
"There is no better illustration of the liberal belief in a benevolent government than their constant attack on individual freedoms and self-protection, particularly regarding firearms.
In liberalworld guns are not necessary because government is good, omnipresent, and protects you from harm. Until reality shows up, that is. And then the problem is a killer simply misunderstood, bullied as a child, or someother such nonsense revolving around a lack of personal responsibility for their actions."
- A commenter on a PSH'ing article that will be the subject of another post
I'm not even sure many anti-gun liberals really believe the lines they use. All but the most ardent anti's will, if pressed, conclude that guns are good and can save lives in some situations, but they'll deny that reality in place of their "guns are bad" belief system. Surely even anti's realize that a cop can't be everywhere, yet I constantly hear that it's best to just have the cops come save you.
That's the problem though, their beliefs don't line up with reality and thus their policies constantly fail when put up against those realities. Perhaps it's nothing more than a level of cognitive dissonance which I'm simply unable to comprehend?

Quote of the day - Free thinkers
"Children who know how to think for themselves spoil the harmony of the collective society which is coming, where everyone is interdependent."
- John Dewey - the father of the modern education system
I actually was going to post this one a few days ago, but then I ran across Kevin's post and saw that he'd used it. Given that Dewey was a Socialist who espoused views like those exemplified in the quote above, is it any wonder that our public education system turns out so many unthinking "useful idiots?"
Of course children who can think independently spoil "collective societies." Fierce individualists are an anathema to collectivists because they are difficult to control and they impede "progress." They have both the intellectual capacity for intelligent dissent and an understanding of the importance of being able to back that up with force. That makes them dangerous.
Individuals who could think for themselves threatened to "spoil the harmony" of Mao, Pol Pot & Stalin's collective, utopian societies too. Brainwashed masses are far, far easier to control.....and to execute.

Like a sieve
I had a thought in my mind for a post this morning and now I can't for the life of me remember what I wanted to write about. D'oh.
Sometimes I wonder if it's possible to use -1% of my brain.

Can we stop with the Palin hate please? Picking on someone's daughter at a bar because you don't agree with the politics of her mother is ridiculous, but then I can't say I'm surprised.
Also, a 47 year old dude hurling that kind of vitriol towards a young woman at a bar is beyond classless. I suppose Palin Derangement Syndrome took over what was left of his brain and he just couldn't help himself.

Old and New - Lab edition
Zack is getting a little older these days, and while his best bud and psuedo-mom has gone up to doggie heaven, he hasn't skipped a beat. He still does all of his favorite things, tries to keep up with the young pups, and sings along with the family during "Happy Birthday."
Even more important, he's on a bit of an exercise routine and is finally starting to slim down. His old collars now hang off of him, though he's still got weight to lose.
That said, "trying to keep up" sometimes results in my having to massage his legs and help him with the stairs. I'm hoping that continued weight loss will help quite a bit with that.
Maybe he should lay off the Dogfish Head.... Quit coming over to my apartment and sneaking off with my stash!

Grandpa Dubya
Was an NRA member. I never knew my grandpa. He passed away at 59, years before I was born. This past weekend however I was giving my dad something for safekeeping and he had me put it with his dad's old stuff.
This is what I found in that old cigar box. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Grandpa was a WWII and Korean War vet and I know he owned at least two guns, his army issued 1911 and a shotgun of some sort, though no one seems to have any idea what might have happened to them.
Made in Attleboro, Mass. Imagine that!

Quote of the day - Chicks with guns
"I was so surprised by the variety and breadth and diversity of these women,”.... “There are so many stereotypes about guns, mostly derived from popular culture, but the reality is so much more complex and varied than you can imagine.”
- Lindsey McCrum - Author of Chicks With Guns
One of the great things about becoming a gun owner, or in McCrum's case, interacting with gun owners, is that it forces you to reevaluate stereotypes and prejudices. I don't know how many times someone has found out I own guns and their reaction was "wow!, really? I would never have expected that!" because in their mind I'm not what they picture as a "typical gun owner."

The Left is despicable
The Left, by way of Media Matters, has taken to outright attacking Mike Vanderboegh because he blew the lid off of a massive gunrunning scandal by the Obama Administration.
Conveniently, they dismiss his coverage of Obama's "Fast & Furious" scandal as "conspiracy theories" and instead use his past associations to engage in character assassination. This is the political left in this country. They can't attack Vanderboegh's message on it's merits, they can't call into question his reporting of the facts, and they sure as hell aren't going to actually cover Obama's Watergate, so they try to smear Vanderboegh to avoid talking about the scandal that's staring them in the face.
When the Left hates you and attacks you it means you're doing something right. Keep on giving em' hell Mike!

Random thought on our penis compensators
The anti's are right, guns are obviously penis compensators! Why else would we use the term "Magnum" to describe calibers? It's ingenious! throw magnum on the end, wear it like a hat and you can make the folks with .22 WMR and .32 H&R Magnum feel adequate. :P
