We know that the Indiana Supreme Court recently ruled that citizens have no right to resist unlawful police entry into their homes. Here in Delaware citizens have no right to forcibly resist an arrest, even it it is unlawful.
From Delaware code section 464 - Justification - Use of force in self-protection
"(d) The use of force is not justifiable under this section to resist an arrest which the defendant knows or should know is being made by a peace officer, whether or not the arrest is lawful."
That said, sometimes the police aren't who they say they are, and will kidnap you and tie you up at gunpoint. If someone kicks in my door at o' dark thirty I'm assuming they are there to do me harm. Any rational person would make the same assumption I believe.

Open carry at lunch
At the food court I sometimes frequent for lunch I'll often see folks open carrying in a polo shirt and khakis. They're usually carrying either a Glock or Sig of some sort.
Oh wait, they're plainclothes cops, with a snazzy little badge they can show you if they feel like it. Funny how that puts the sheeple so at ease.

Quote of the day - mindset
"The bad men who roam the world are not the Boogy man. Cut them they bleed. Shoot them they die. They have nothing on you other than whether you allow yourself to be mentally beaten from the start.
When the feces hits the impeller (and it does constantly in life). You are the motor to the fan. You either shut down or you speed up.
Speed up."
- Matthew of Straight Forward in a Crooked World
I've read him many times before and yet somehow I missed this post. I'm not quite sure how that happened. This post is excellent! Take Breda's advice and read the whole thing.
The bad men of the world aren't looking for a fight. They don't want you to fight back, nor are they expecting it. Fight back! I read a piece several years back which made the case that the appropriate response to a violent assault should be to fight back with unbridled rage. I wish I could remember what it was I read.

Hey Obama! That ship has sailed!
The Obama campaign is selling T-shirts with his birth certificate printed on the back, presumably to counter the whole "Birther" movement.
This is beyond stupid. First off, Obama already lacks all credibility on a whole host of issues, like say, everything he campaigned on. Second, not only is he an arrogant, contemptible, pussified asshat, he's also lied to just about everyone. Does he really think a damn T-shirt is going to make people, birthers in particular, believe him?

Random thoughts
1. If you OC while taking out the trash the shady looking loiterer now headed your direction will stop & turn around upon seeing the Sig on your hip. Good! I need beggar / panhandler repellant.
2. A beer that's damn near 20% ABV will get you drunk just sipping it.
3. 120 Minute IPA is like 90 Minute on steroids, only a bit sweeter. Even the smell is phenomenal.
4. Great beer is even better when paired with beef, bacon & beer battered onion rings.
5. I brake checked a car full of teenagers in a Grand Am who were riding my ass. I shook my head and thought "damn kids!!". This is a sign I'm getting old.
6. If I jump in the left lane to pass a long line of slowpokes do not flash your highs at me! I'm already going 25 over the speedlimit.
7. Only in Dewey Beach can you see a drunk guy in a kiddie pool in the middle of the street one afternoon.

Quote of the day - killing
"Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to kill anybody. I just realize that some things call for it. And that is what makes me a gun nut."
- Sayuncle - 1/11/07 - One of his best (and longest) posts.
When you pull everything else away that's what gun ownership is all about. Individual autonomy and the ability of the individual to say "NO!," emphasize it, and definitively and decisively enforce that "NO!" when absolutely necessary under dire circumstances.
This is also why, when someone 1st considers buying a firearm for self/home defense, it's important that they engage in a little introspection. If you want to own a firearm specifically for purposes of self defense it behooves you to be honest with yourself about your personal morals and willingness to kill a man if need be.

Neck Knife Carry
Any readers / fellow bloggers carry a neck knife? Any of you carry one openly? I'm going to start doing some cardio training at the State Parks around here since the weather is nice and treadmill running is just pissing me off. Since I'll be out on the trails by myself I'm thinking a neck knife might be a good idea.*
* No, I can't OC a firearm in State Parks, nor can I conceal a neck knife under my shirt legally. Also, I still have to double check State Park regs regarding knives, but I don't recall seeing any prohibition of unconcealed knives.

Friday Nostalgia
"Yesterdays". One of my favorite songs from Guns & Roses. Slash wasn't half bad in the short lived band "Velvet Revolver" either. I'll definitely have "Use Your Illusion II" in the CD changer on the way to the beach tomorrow night.* "Don't Cry" is pretty badass too.
*Yes, I'm oldschool and still use CD's in the car.

Get fit!
First it was Jay G., then me, then Breda, and now Laura's getting on the "kick my own ass*" bandwagon. This is a trend I can get behind. Gunnies kicking ass! It has certainly worked for Jay & Breda. They both look great!
*As Jim Carrey would say "I'm kicking my ass! Do ya mind!?"
Me? I'm one of those odd ducks who working out and packing on the calories so I'll finally gain some weight. I know you all hate me, but trust me, it's hard!

Quote of the day - obeying laws
" I will say this much: no one will be permitted in my home without either my express permission, or a warrant. Period. Private property is private property, the Fourth Amendment remains on the books, and just as no one is bound to obey an unconstitutional law, no one is bound to obey an unconstitutional court ruling either."
- Linoge
Linoge is spot on here. The recent Indiana Supreme Court ruling stating that I have no right to resist even unlawful forcible entry into my home by law enforcement is an affront to the supreme law of this country, the Constitution. Had such a ruling come down here in Delaware it would not change the manner in which I chose to defend my home. I am not engaged in criminal activity and, as such, have no reason for anyone, cops or otherwise, to be breaking down the door. If armed, masked thugs kick in your door at 2AM you react accordingly, not in accordance with what some pompous judge thinks.
If the Delaware Supreme court ruled that it was legal for the police to confiscate firearms from lawful owners without due process I would ignore that ruling as well. My rights are my rights. I retain them even if some moronic liberal judge concludes that, through "modern interpretation" they no longer exist.

Fear and progress
My officemate here at the firm is afraid of guns. A few days ago she comes into work and says to me "Mike, you're gonna be proud of me!" Well it turns out that earlier this week she bit the bullet and handled a firearm for the first time ever.
I was happy to hear that the 4 rules were discussed and the firearm was handed to her unloaded with the action open. The next step she says? "A trip to the range to get over my fears." She recognized her fear and was willing to take steps to eliminate it. I'm proud of her. We're winning, one person at a time.

We need dangerous victims
As I mentioned in a post earlier this month, anti-gun folks want to keep the most vulnerable members of society disarmed, while doing nothing to combat predatory violence.
Men like Antonio Smith, a paraplegic who was murdered in Wilmington don't matter to anti-gunners except as a statistic they can trot out as a victim of "gun violence." Gun laws didn't make one bit of difference to his killer, already a felon who surely had a long rap sheet. All gun laws accomplish is to sway the balance of power in favor of these scumbags who have no regard for human life.
Imagine Delaware had constitutional carry. The lowlife scumbag Mr. Holmes would still be armed, yet now Mr. Smith wouldn't have to jump through any hoops to keep a pistol in his pocket. Anti-gunners would never stand for that. They'd rather see Mr. Smith dead than see men like him free to carry tools necessary for self-defense.

Open carry and Wilmington Police Department
From this account over at Delaware Open Carry it sounds like certain members of the Wimington Police Department think they're Philly cops or something.
Here's an excerpt from the incident,
"they did not charge me with any crime. Instead, they cited a belief that armed citizens should always have proof of ownership of their firearm on them. They said that they also reserve the right to detain and disarm anyone in order to prove that the firearm is not stolen.....they explained that my firearm would not be returned to me until I could appear at the police station with sufficient proof that I own the firearm."
So, first he's stopped without cause, then detained without cause, then asked for things which do not exist or which he could not possibly be expected to produce. Then, to top it all off the Wilmington Police Dept. steals his property after they'd clearly run it and had it not come up stolen.
That said, I've heard many things about the Wilmington police from people I trust and whom are in a position to know. None of what I've heard has been good. Let's just say that the department has "issues" from the top down. It sounds to me like Wilmington cops are in need of a refresher course about what is and isn't legal, even if that means they've got to learn in the hard way. I swear, it pisses me off to no end that "ignorance is not excuse" applies if I break the law, but ignorance of the law is perfectly acceptable when said ignorance results in civil rights violations by police.
I very much respect the policing profession as a whole, but I have absolutely zero respect for police officers who will willfully and wantonly violate the rights of Delaware citizens. What a shame that Delaware is a two-party state for audio recordings, because I'd love to have audio of the Wilmington cops (err thugs) telling an OC'er what was said above.

Holsters - no lefty love
While at the NRA Convention in Pittsburgh a month ago I got to check out Breda's snazzy new holster for her Bersa Thunder .380. * I had purchased two JBP holsters on Breda's recommendation some time ago and wasn't very impressed. The one for my Sig P6 didn't hold up well, felt, floppy & unsecure, and I quickly switched to a Comp-Tac MTAC dedicated to that gun. After seeing the Galco rig I figured I might want to try that out for my .22.
I was impressed with the MX7 Matrix, especially for the low price, so I decided to buy one for my Firestorm FS22. (you should have a holster for every gun you own, right?) I checked Galco's website and didn't see any lefthanded M7X Matrix holsters for the Bersa/Firestorm Thunder .380 / .32 / .22 line of pistols.
I contacted Galco and received a very prompt response. Sadly, the response was what I'd thought it'd be.
"Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, the M7X for the Firestorm FS22 and Bersa Thunder .380 is currently offered in a right hand model only. Demand has not been sufficient to date for introduction of a left hand version. "
Sigh. I guess this is what happens when you're left-handed. I have to say I'm a little bit surprised they don't offer a lefty model, given the popularity of the Bersa / Firestorm Thunder line of pistols. They do have a product request form, which is great. Also hats off to Galco's customer service. I do wonder though, how the MX7 Matrix might hold up when carrying something big & heavy in it, like my Sig P220ST or DW Heritage?
* Yes folks, I was checking out the holster!

Illegal ordinances
Having read Robb's post I am jealous of Florida. Their new, revamped state preemption law actually has teeth should government officials choose to ignore it.
To quote Robb,
"Now that their pocketbooks and their own asses are on the line, look for more and more of these laws to magically disappear."
Some of you might remember this post. Well if we want to get into the technicalities of it, I was "breaking the law." New Castle County has an ordinance on the books prohibiting the carrying of firearms in county parks. Carousel Park where I OC'd that weekend is a county park. Technically, since there's an ordinance on the books saying carry is prohibited I was breaking the law.
The County ordinance states,
No person shall carry a knife upon his or her person having a blade three (3) inches or longer in length or have possession of or discharge a BB gun, air rifle, pistol, firearm, paint ball gun, bow and arrow or any other type of lethal weapon in any park.
(Ord. No. 98-050, § 1(24-14), (5-26-1998)
The ordinance in question is outright illegal. It was passed in 1998. The State AG's office knows it is illegal and could not charge anyone arrested under it. The NCC County Council knows it is illegal. How do I know this? Because they have been contacted by Delaware Open Carry regarding it and acknowledged, in writing, that their County law violates State law. That was over three years ago*, yet the statute is still on the books. They have been contacted again but have yet to respond. The state of Delaware passed statewide preemption on July 4th,1985. Any local firearms law enacted after preemption was passed is illegal and unenforceable. In fact, the reason permitless open carry is banned in the capital of Dover is because the city ordinance predates the state preemption statute.
There's the rub though. The ordinance is illegal, those in County government know it is illegal and those who would charge me under it know it can't be enforced. Still, having it on the books leaves me and every single Delaware citizen who OC's in county parks open to arrest.
Apparently this is a problem in PA as well and as Sebastian notes,
" I never recommended people obey these ordinances, because hey are illegal."
Well, I wasn't obeying the illegal county parks ordinance, however my "lawbreaking" wasn't intentional. I simply assumed that the matter had been resolved. Silly me, I should've assumed that those who work for us would simply break the law and ignore us. It's a little disconcerting given the contents of the most recent letter sent to county council states that the NCC Police know the ordinance is illegal yet have been instructed to arrest anyone open carrying. It's almost as if some in Delaware law enforcement want to emulate Philly cops.
* I can't seem to find the original letter sent to Tackett back in 2008, so a DELOC press release will have to do.

A very merry un-event
Breda and Nancy contacted me with the idea of promoting an "OC Day" in the gun blogosphere. So, if you can you should open carry on June 5th. Call it an "Open Carry Un-Event" or "Open Carry Non-Event" if you will. That is, afterall, what OC usually is, uneventful. Normal (and sometimes awesome) people going about their usual daily business with nothing out of the ordinary happening.
So, will you be OC'ing on June 5th? If so, don't make a big deal about it. Remember, it's a non-event. As the Nike slogan says, "Just do it!" Word has it there just might be some T-shirts in the works too. Perhaps there should be OC day pants made instead, lest people start OC'ing their bare butts around in public?
(Please keep in mind that pants and shirts are still generally required in public even if you're not "nekkid" per se.)
Sadly "The Pantsless Wonder" can't participate in this, but I know he's fighting the good fight in Florida! Maybe one day Robb will be able to OC a 10mm Glock in a shoulder holster, sans pants.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to post today, and I have nothing scheduled to go up, so here are three old posts of mine I think you should read if you're not a long-time Another Gunblog reader.

Angry gimp
Somehow I don't think I should wear this T-shirt while open carrying. Someone might get the wrong impression.....
More on the Philly Police & Open Carry
Read this article in the examiner. I'm glad someone gets it. Wanton violation of civil rights is no laughing matter.
Philadelphia Police, stupidity and a lawsuit
I'd say the title of my post is accurate. According to this article the Philadelphia Police Department is literally asking to be sued under current Federal Civil Rights statutes.
Chapter 18 section 241 of Federal statutes states the following,
Sec. 241. Conspiracy against rights
"If two or more persons conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or because of his having so exercised the same.....They shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both."
The Philly PD are stating outright their intention to prone out, presumably at gunpoint, anyone who chooses to lawfully exercise their 2nd Amendment rights in the city. The entire Philly police department has now stated that they fully intend to "oppress, threaten, or intimidate" citizens solely for the act of exercising a Constitutionally protected right.
Now, I'd love to be the test case, since I have family living in Philly, but I'm a coward and I'm not keen on getting shot. My only encounter with Philadelphia police was one in which the officer in question was a rude, antagonistic, condescending bitch who had an attitude with me immediately because I was a well dressed young man driving an expensive car in her city. She then proceeded to refuse to answer a simply, politely asked question AND call me a liar in front of my parents, who took great exception to the false accusation.
Given that experience and the manner in which the Philadelphia Police treat open carriers you'll have to excuse me for having little / no respect for the Philadelphia Police Dept. as a whole. I have to say it's a good thing the police are this goddamn stupid and arrogant, because it'll make our case that much easier when the do get sued.
I have three words for these thugs with badges in Philadelphia. Go Alan Go!

A beautiful day...
Today's a beautiful day for petite, Irish librarians to open carry. Go Breda! Hell, it's a beautiful day period. In case you were wondering, yes, I'm open carrying and no one batted an eye when I stopped for lunch in Hockessin. I did avoid taking the dog for a walk here since the park was crawling with families due to about 4 concurrent baseball games. What can I say? I'm a coward.
Now I think I'll go outside, take my shirt off and get some sun on this great day! Oh my god! Shirtless man with a gun! Run for your lives!

The other day a liberal and I ended up briefly discussing open carry. I mentioned that, by and large, most folks don't care, don't react, or react positively to open carry. I pointed out that I consider this a net positive, since those folks see a normal person being friendly and affable and going about his daily business.
I shit you not, he actually said to me that people are probably afraid of me and are only polite because of fear. He then claimed that I am "oppressing" people by open carrying because the fearful reaction it elicits restricts their behavior and speech. I think I offended him when I asked if a black man in the south who sat peacefully at a lunch counter with his newspaper was "oppressing" whites, and if, given this, the man should refrain from going about his daily business. *
You can't make this crap up. Nice enough guy and all, we get along just fine, but damn if this isn't why I have trouble having political discussions with liberals. The reliance on emotion and the complete lack of rational thought backed by facts & logic really irks me.
* I find folks sometimes hate the analogies to blacks because "being black and owning / carrying an object aren't the same" True, they are not, but then that's not the point of the analogy. The fact that race is a immutable characteristic while RKBA isn't doesn't change the validity of what are logical analogies. I also find the same resistance to the "interracial marriage" comparisons because "you simply can't compare the two. One holds far more value than the right to carry an instrument of imminent death"

Rapture
I've got beer in the fridge, a bottle of booze, a ton of full ammo cans in the closet and last but not least, teepee for my bunghole. Bring on the Rapture! I'm all set!
Sumpin' Sumpin' Fail
I tried three different liquor stores near my parents house trying to find some Sumpin' Sumpin' to try and had no luck. Not only did they not have any, two of the three had never heard of Lagunitas Brewing Co. and none had any of their offerings. I figure if Breda recommends them they're probably pretty good. Perhaps when I head to Newark to pick up my computer I'll broaden my search. Surely in a college town with a million liquor stores I'll be able to track a little Sumpin' Sumpin' down, right?
All was not lost however, since I did discover that the liquor store near my parents carries a few brews from Shipyard Brewing Co. Shipyard is a Maine based brewery and comes highly recommended by Weer'd. I'm not a big fan of summery brews, but I do enjoy a lighter summer ale from time to time. I'll say one thing. I prefer this Shipyard Summer Ale to Sam Adams Summer Ale.

Quote of the day - Progressivism
"Historically, those whose ideals proved a threat to progressivism found themselves in mass graves."
-Tasso Rampante - Commenting at Uncle's
That, my friends, is why gun ownership and the carrying of arms is so opposed by "progressives." One of the key tenets of progressivism throughout history has been to force others to live under their utopian ideals. Control is essential to the progressive notion of "progress" and thus, the autonomy, self-reliance and freedom of individual gun ownership is the ultimate threat to their stated goals and their ability to gain and retain power. This is why "progressives" have historically disarmed the people.
It's a hell of a lot harder to force people to do what you want when they retain the ultimate means of saying "NO!," the ability to kill your ass if you fuck with them bad enough. A "NO!" carries far more emphasis when there's a rifle in hand to back it up. The British learned this first hand, and even the most intellectually challenged anti-gunners understand it at some level.
H/T to Sean for providing the impetus for this post. Make sure you go read.

Arguing with anti's
Lately, you may have noticed a conspicuous absence of posts where I'm arguing with anti-gunners. Maybe I'm just getting older and mellowing out? More than likely it's because there simply aren't many anti-gunners on the intertubes.
Furthermore, those who are left usually fit into one of three categories.
1. They don't blog anymore, don't blog about guns anymore, turned off all comments, or ban all dissent. One particularly nasty anti actually set her entire blog to "invitation only." Frankly, if calling them out and exposing their lies causes them to stop spewing their bigotry I see that as a win for the pro-rights crowd.
2. Their level of demonstrated intelligence and logical reasoning ability is so abysmally low that I could have a more engaging discussion about guns with a 5 year old. You can only go so long before an anti's demonstrated lack of a capacity for rational thought makes your brain hurt. (Think "Billy Madison" academic triathalon)
3. They engage in a level of personal attacks and "outings" so despicable, so vile that I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire. Hell, I doubt even R. Kelly would piss on them.

Guns & booze - blogger edition
If you read my blog you're probably familiar with Laura & Chris, who blog over at "Insert witty title here." What you might not know is that Chris also has a blog devoted to booze reviews. Check it out if you're so inclined.
Guns & Booze! Oh noes!

NRA Convention moments
One of the funniest parts of the NRA convention for me was watching Laura's gigglebox get kicked over....repeatedly. I'm sitting there next to her and I'm now laughing my ass off because she's laughing so hard her chest hurts. I've known her a long time now, so I've heard the gigglesnorts before, but damn, I haven't seen her laugh like that in quite some time. It was hilarious!
I'll admit though, Weer'dy had me in fits a couple of times too. Good times, good times!

Beating down bigots
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has, like so many anti-gunners have before them, taken to outright personal attacks and "outing" of pro-gun bloggers. You'd think that anti's would learn that not only is such behaviour despicable and totally unacceptable, but also that they are completely outmatched by us.
They've been "outing" pro-gun bloggers all over Twitter and Facebook, posting full names, states of residence and places of employment. Well, they did it to Linoge and he opened up a can of whoopass on them.
Update - Via Sebastian, apparently the folks at the CSGV are used to getting their asses handed to them and, predictably, acting like petulant little children once that happens.

Things I hate
I hate it when I write posts that are such pieces of crap that they just sit, languishing in the draft doldrums because they're not worth posting.
Taking after Philly
Delaware man open carries. New Castle County officer pulls up, gets out of car with his gun drawn.
"I walked all of the west C-section of Brookside, and was working my way through the east section when, lo and behold, up comes the boy in brown to save the day. Gun drawn, he orders my arms out as he approaches me gun drawn." *
When you open carry you hope not to be accosted by the police in any manner, but you sure as hell don't want some cop running up on you, gun in his hand, simply because you're carrying. I'm interested to see what comes of the complaint he filed with the NCCPD. It seems they need a reminder of what is appropriate and exactly whom they work for.
*fyi, the thread kind of veers off track after page 1.

Not the gun
A 23 year old Wilmington man gets shot during a basketball game in a shady area of Wilmington. There are no suspects and no one has come forward with any information for police. That's SOP for most shootings in the city.
Of course the News Journal's Ira Porter has to throw in something about homicides and the State's efforts to "strengthen gun laws," as if there's some connection there.
Wilmington City Councilman Kevin Kelley seems to think it's the guns that are the problem
"Kelley said guns are a common factor for all crime in Wilmington and there needs to be a way to solve this issue."
There's not a legislative fix for this. It's a cultural problem. The gun laws are fairly uniform statewide here in DE, yet our murders and overall violent crime remain largely a Wilmington problem. That tells me the problem lies with Wilmington, it's people, criminal culture, corrupt citiy government and inept police force.

Dogfish Head Open Carry
Open carry at a Brewery?!! Oh the horror!
I'm glad to see my favorite brewery is cool with open carry. Who says guns & alcohol don't mix?

My First Time
I was thinking today about the very 1st time I carried a gun in public. I'd just gotten my permit and was meeting my dad in PA for dinner. I met dad in the parking lot*, we headed into this little italian restaurant, sat at the bar, ordered pizza and I bought him a beer. There I was, Sig on my hip, spare mag in my back pocket and a cold one in a frosted mug in front of me yet I somehow avoided getting wasted and shooting up the place.
*No worries about being made giving dad a hug. Most of the time us dubya men don't hug eachother.

Behold the goofy
I love goofiness, and with my family there's no shortage of goofy. Whether it's my little sis making faces that make you wonder if she's even human, silly string fights even at my age, or my sisters walking round with massive artificial badonkadonks and purposefully knocking em' into things, there's usually some kind of antics happening when everyone's back home.
Over Easter we thought we'd turn the tables on Mom & Dad and throw them an Easter egg hunt filled with clues, plastic eggs and "prizes" The image of my mom, in the yard on all fours, looking for eggs had me absolutely cracking up.
Anyway, here's a small sampling of the clues we made up. Yep, we're definitely oddballs. The 1st was my contribution. My dad is a bit of a cookie monster, so growing up I'd hide cookies & sweets I didn't want to disappear in the back of our liquor cabinet.

Quote of the day - laws
"The house of representatives can make no law which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as the great mass of society. This has always been deemed one of the strongest bonds by which human policy can connect the rulers and the people together. It creates between them that communion of interest, and sympathy of sentiments, of which few governments have furnished examples; but without which every government degenerates into tyranny."
-James Madison - Federalist No. 57
Ah, if only Madison could see the contemptible authoritarians we have in government today.

Inspiration?
"We think people are inspirational when they do things we didn’t think they were capable of. People tend to think I’m inspirational because they don’t have high expectations of people with disabilities. They say I’ve accomplished so much on crutches, and I have to wonder, if I wasn’t on crutches, would people say what I’ve accomplished is really mediocre?”
- Cort Schneider
Exactly. You make due with the hand you've been dealt and simply live your life. Is that really "inspirational" just because you happen to have a "disability" or is it just you being yourself?
or, as Breda said in comments to this post,
"I never understood the praise either...people saying,"Oh, I admire you so much."
And I'm always like, "For what? For just living my life?"
If you're going to admire someone admire them despite their disability, not because of it.

Quote of the day - freedom vs. authority
"Most men, after a little freedom, have preferred authority with the consoling assurances and the economy of effort which it brings. "
-Walter Lippmann
That's a sad truth, but as those of us who truly value liberty know all too well, most people don't want it.

Coonan 1911's
One of my favorite products at the NRA Convention in Pittsburgh were Dan Coonan's .357 Mag 1911's*. (not .357 SIG!!) I'd heard of Dan Coonan before but had always assumed they were at a premium price point above what I could ever afford. At the Coonan booth I spoke with VP of Coonan Inc. Dave Neville. As it turns out Coonan makes a beautiful entry level .357 for about $1200. Not cheap, but the piece I handled was nice and tight, the trigger was crisp, and of course it was pretty.
Personally I love Coonan's disclaimer on their website, which reads,
"Please Note: This firearm is NOT for beginners! If you are looking for your first firearm, don’t buy this one"
Hey, it may not be a good first gun, but it's 1911-esque and sure as hell looks like it'd be a blast to shoot! As Mr. Neville explained, the gun can shoot both .357 Mag and .38 using the same magazines provided you swap out the recoil spring for a lighter, factory supplied 10 lb. spring. This is good, considering factory mags are $60 direct from Coonan. I suspect the gun might be somewhat finicky with certain .38 Spl. loads since it's designed around .357 Mag, but of course I can't verify that until I've got one in my hands.
*1911 style would be more accurate, since not all parts are interchangable with a standard 1911.
Sometimes you want a gun that you have absolutely no practical use for whatsoever. For me, this is that gun. I want it and I don't even own a single firearm in .38 Spl. or .357 Mag.
I will defer to the talented Oleg Volk for pictures of this fine pistol. Go click and look at The Precious.

Status Report
It looks as if blogger has permanently eaten at least one of my posts. I've got it backed up on a thumbdrive at work, so I'll get that post back up soon.
Sorry the free ice cream machine has been on the fritz a bit lately folks. I've been a little "bleh" with a case of writer's block. I might get a post or two up tonight, might not. If not, well go peruse the archives or click on over on the right side there for your free ice cream fix. There are plenty of great writers on my blogroll.

Sex & Booze
Uncle links to an opinion piece in which the author opposes campus carry because it would "give guns to young students largely interested in sex & booze." Look, I'm 25, which some folks would consider "young" and I'm also largely interested in sex & booze (beer counts right?)
So, If I prove I'm a young student largely interested in sex & booze will someone give me a gun? I can always use another. Damn, where's that old University of Delaware student ID? Oh wait!? You mean they don't actually hand out brand new 1911's to 21 year olds upon passage of "campus carry" legislation? Boy, it's almost as if anti-gunners are lying. I have to give them some credit I suppose. They're probably somewhat accurate on the "sex & booze" part of the statement.

Dude, I'm cutting you off!
If you're so wasted you're calling 911 to ask the operators to go on a beer run perhaps you should call me instead! Hell, I'll gladly grab your favorite libation, though I do charge a modest fee and I'm not responsible for where you pee.
No one cares about Delaware
Hell, not even the late Osama Bin Laden cares about Delaware. Apparently he didn't think that Mr. Gaffe machine himself, Vice President Joe Biden was worth trying to assassinate. I mean if you're a foreign terrorist organization you want your adversaries to be incompetent fools, right?
Disobedience
Any court of law which rules that I may not forcibly resist an unlawful entry into my own home has abrogated its judicial duties and violated its oath. As such, no such ruling should be obeyed by the people.
Imagine this scenario. A cop gets hammered and gets into an argument with you at a bar. You, being the better man, remove yourself from the situation and drive home. The cop follows you home, breaks down your door and comes after you. According to the Indiana Supreme Court you have no legal right to resist such an assault on your home and yourself. Such reasoning is unconscionable.
I say this as someone who knows plenty of cops and has several in his family. When a police officer comes to your home, especially in any official capacity, he is NOT your friend. If he unlawfully breaks into your home he is nothing more than a common home invader with a badge and should be treated as such.
Unlawful entry is unlawful entry. Period. What this ruling says is that there's one rule of law for cops to abide by while they're committing a crime and an entirely different set for the rest of us. Bullshit. A thug with a badge is still just a thug. My rights, particularly my rights to defend my home, do no disappear because of what that thug happens to be wearing and they do not disappear because of what moronic judge rules.
"the Indiana Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Hoosiers have no right to resist unlawful police entry into their homes.Excuse me? Indiana residents have no right to resist unlawful entry? Ones right to resist unlawful entry into his home has been a tenet of the western legal system for a millenia. The fact that the Indiana Supreme Court now says this is not so doesn't actually change anything. I would hope that not a single Indiana resident will abide by this ruling. I certainly would plan to ignore any such ruling were the Delaware Supreme Court to adopt a similar view. At that point it becomes a moral imperative of every freedom loving citizen to disobey such law.
In a 3-2 decision, Justice Steven David writing for the court said if a police officer wants to enter a home for any reason or no reason at all, a homeowner cannot do anything to block the officer’s entry.
“We believe … a right to resist an unlawful police entry into a home is against public policy and is incompatible with modern Fourth Amendment jurisprudence,” David said. “We also find that allowing resistance unnecessarily escalates the level of violence and therefore the risk of injuries to all parties involved without preventing the arrest.”

A Little Sumpin' Sumpin'
This is a Little Sumpin' Sumpin' I need to try if I can find it. A name like that and a pinup girl on the packaging? Made of Win!
Also, it's odd that they list it as a "seasonal" but then don't list what season it's avaliable in.

Penis Compensation
If, as anti-gun folks are so eager to point out, guns are a means of compensating for a small penis (or lack of one) then how do you explain the itty bitty miniature guns at the NRA Convention?
I mean sure, for pocket-sized folks maybe those are adequate compensation, but me, I want a hunk o' steel. ;)

Ohio, guns in bars! Oh no!
The Ohio house finally got Ohio in line with the rest of the country and got rid of their ridiculous law prohibiting CCW in "bars." Keep in mind that "bars" for the purposes of "guns in bars" discussions actually means "any place that serves alcohol." Delaware has no such restrictions. I could head down to Iron Hill Brewery in Wilmington with a 1911 on my hip. Hell, I could even have a pint of Raspberry Wheat while there, though I'd personally choose to forgo the beer.
Imagine if there was hysteria because people were *gasp* allowed to drive a several ton vehicle to and from a place where alcohol could be easily consumed. Oh wait, you mean people already do this everyday and 99.999% of them don't suddenly feel compelled to get smashed & drive drunk anytime they enter an establishment where they can buy a beer?
Guess what? CCW holders aren't getting smashed and shooting up bars & restaurants just because it's legal for them to walk in while carrying. It's been legal to carry in places that serve booze for as long as I can remember in Delaware (and PA) and we haven't had any issues. None! Anti's talk about the potential for bad things to happen, yet as is always the case they are engaging in nothing more than fanatical fearmongering. They're using scare tactics on what reality tells us is a complete non-issue.
Truth be told I can't recall a single news story of an OC'er or CCW holder getting hammered and shooting up a Delaware bar or restaurant. You'll have to excuse me for having no respect for some commenters at the news story link who think this is somehow a bad idea. I especially love the idiots who say they want to leave Ohio now, clearly not realizing that it's already legal in most of the U.S. If guns in bars is clearly a non-issue in my state why would it be a problem in Ohio, Tennessee etc.?

Winning
More and more women are putting aside their trepidation and fear of firearms and are buying guns and learning to shoot. We are winning, one enlightened, empowered woman at a time! Speaking of that, I think it's time for me to get a few ladies out for their inaugural range trips.

Use your noggin'
Whether you live in a state where you carry or one where the serfs have been disarmed, keep one thing in mind. The most important weapon at your disposal is that squishy mess of grey matter between your ears.
Situational awareness is key. It can get you out of bad situations and ensure that bad situations don't turn into really bad situations.....sometimes. I'd rather not hear of something like this happening to a good friend, but I'm glad nothing else came of the situation and that Laura's OK.
Also, her story illustrates once again a truism that all of us gunbloggers understand. If bad shit goes down the police will NOT be there to save you. Laura had a cell phone. She called the police. They didn't even show up. Had this man decided to attack her she'd have been on her own, disarmed of an effective self-defense tool because in MD the lives of mere serfs like you and I aren't worth much.
Keep your head up & always pay attention folks. Stay safe!

Tastes like chicken...
So I'm walking from the ghetto to my office this morning and what do I see but a sign offering an ingenious idea for getting rid of your pesky hobo problem. Hell, anyone who reads Breda's blog knows those smelly hobos can be a nuisance.
They're holding Hobo Dinners! I don't know if Wilmington has a sizeable enough cannibal population to address the problem, and I'll bet hobos aren't all that tasty. That said, it's worth a shot, right?

Inspiration and competitive drive
Sometimes I read an article and it puts me at a complete loss for words. This is one of those times. Go read the inspirational story of Cross Country runner Daniel Reed. There's also an article on him from his middle school running days. Read them both, you won't be disappointed.
I used to jokingly tell people who'd ask "how do you do it?" that "I put one foot in front of the other as fast as I can for 3.1 miles." Daniel's feat gives words like that a whole new meaning.
Speaking of running fast with CP, check out this guy trying to run a sub 6-minute mile mark after having had achilles tendon surgery two years prior.*
*He likely had the same surgery I had on my right achilles. It's no joke. I never regained anything near full strength in that foot.

The only good Hippie...
....Is one that gets you buzzed.

Hippie IPA, given to me by some guy from Ohio. It wasn't bad, but I think I'll stick to my staple IPA. Dogfish Head 90 Minute. I've yet to find an IPA I like better than 90 Minute.

Anti-rights not anti-gun
Almost invariably we see that anti-gunners are really just freedom hating bigots. They're not just anti-gun, they're anti-rights.
We see yet another example of that from the bigots at the CSGV. We don't like your free speech or the manner in which you exercise it, so you shouldn't be able to keep & bear arms either. I can't say I'm surprised. It's exactly what I'd expect from anti-rights bigots.

Quote of the day - pricing
"If something is priced too rich for your blood, don't buy it. If it's too rich for everybody else's blood, too, then the seller will drop the price or starve. If other people are buying it but you think it's too expensive, then you just can't afford it. Hey, sorry 'bout that.
But the minute you decide that the government can tell a man how much he can charge for his goods or services, you're not one bit better than Karl goddam Marx."

AMEN Tam! Thank you!
Now, regarding the article she links to how about we apply some commonsense. You are in a disaster zone. Certain products have become both scarce and incredibly valuable overnight (things like guns, generators, gas etc.) The fact that a $400 generator is being sold for $1600 isn't gouging, it's simply the manifestation of the reality of the economic market at that time and place given the new relative value of said generator. Furthermore, if demand for a certain product rises due to outside factors (I.E. natural disaster) and sellers do NOT raise prices accordingly then demand will exceed supply and you'll see a shortage. Shortages are a bad thing folks.
There is no such thing as gouging. Unless you are being compelled by force to purchase said product you have a choice not to purchase it at a particular price. I recall during the ammo drought stories of .380 going for $20-$25 / box at gun shows. It was selling at that price because idiots were obviously willing to pay that much. If someone sets a price and you freely choose to pay it that's not gouging, no matter how ridiculous the price happens to be. No one's putting a gun to your head.

What really happened to Bin Laden
Chuck Norris, with a Judge, in Pakistan.... I always knew Chuck Norris was a badass! Also, I will never again question the stopping power of .410 out of a tiny little barrel. ;)

Man with a gun!
Oh no! A man with a gun! Run for the hills! A man with a gun ran a few errands and then brought his mom out to lunch as an early Mother's Day gift. Then, a man with a gun walked around in the park this afternoon with two labs, two mom's, a baby and a tiny young woman who makes pocket sized folks like Breda look giant.
He passed by couples, women & children, families, joggers, walkers, and teenagers playing frisbee golf. Despite this, the most interaction he had with any fellow park attendees was when a young man and his girlfriend who stopped next to him to "awwwww" at the families of geese and goslings and discuss whether or not they were ducks or geese.
Freedom, fresh air, pups, and a little quality time with my mom* this Mother's Day weekend...all while exercising my rights in the purest manner possible. Ain't freedom grand?
*Mom was behind the camera of course.

We are winning
I love capitalism. Apparently, Walmart loves it too! After phasing gun sales out of many of their stores Walmart is now bringing them back.
Why? Because they realize they're missing out on a cash cow. They're doing it because gunnies will spend money at their stores. Anti-gunners have nothing to compete with us on that front. The dollar is king and the gun owning community is a force to be reckoned with. The anti-gun crowd had best not forget that.

Friday Funny
If I weren't completely opposed to putting bumper stickers on my car I'd totally buy this one! Brilliant! Also, that's one ass I don't want to see.

Gimp Hate
Another blogger has written a post expanding upon Mr. Boyd's "Disabled in the Bullseye" article in Shooting Illustrated.
I particularly liked this bit, and I quote,
"Disabled people have real deficiencies that they struggle to overcome. That shouldn’t be ignored or swept under the rug. But at the same time we must be careful not to overestimate their effects, either, or underestimate the quintessentially human ability to devise ways to overcome those shortcomings. For instance, one cardinal rule I teach others is never to assume a thing cannot be done by a handicapped person until you talk to a person with that handicap who has had some time to put some thought into it. If I am typical (and in my experience, I am), disabled people think about how to get around their disabilities all the time, habitually, and we become much better at forming solutions than a person with no disabilities."
This is absolutely true. When my roommate and I hit the gym he'll often have me try different exercises. Sometimes this works out well and I've found something I can use to switch up my routine. Other times we find that I can't do a particular exercise, or that I have to tweak it a little to suit my needs. You never know unless you try.
One thing that really irks me about anti-gunners is their insistence on disarming the most vulnerable Americans while dismissing the consequences that doing so would have for those people. You hear it all the time from anti's. They tell victims of violent crime to "run away" or "don't hide behind a gun. be a man and use your fists." They use all manner of variations of such statements.
The practical application of such statements would leave the disabled without recourse, as if they were expendable, no more than food for the wolves. Anti-gunners, who will talk about "morals," "compassion," "human rights" etc. are full of shit. Telling the most vulnerable among us that they must walk amongst the wolves without the benefit of an egalitarian, equalizing tool is the antithesis of morality, compassion, or human rights.
If you only have one leg how the hell are you supposed to run away? If you're wheelchair bound how are you supposed to duke it out with someone ablebodied? Anti-gunners don't care. In their world perhaps Americans with physical impediments don't exist or don't matter, but in the real world those people are frequently victimized.

Thank Yous
There are plenty of great folks who need to be thanked publicly for making this years NRA Convention awesome.
First off, thanks to the NRA. Without them this event couldn't happen.
Second, thank you Laura & Chris for putting me up for a night, loaning me a laptop, and for tagging along with me even though it meant I'd be the 3rd wheel. Also, thanks for dinner, getting me to try tasty brusselsprouts, and of course delicious, nommable baked goods.
Third, thank you Breda for organizing yet another great dinner / shindig. I hope it continues as an annual event.
Fourth, thank you Old NFO for picking up the tab for all of us at Breda's shindig at Lidia's. I know I thanked you before but it deserves to be repeated here.
Fifth, thank you Brian from Luckygunner for buying lunch on your tab for a bunch of us gunbloggers. Remember, any ammo you see on their site is in stock and ready to ship!
Sixth, thank you Lars & Jim Supina for allowing a handful of us bloggers to get our sweaty mitts on some awesome historical 1911's!
Seventh, thank you Breda's Mike for bringing me beer. I've still got one bottle left to try.
And of course thanks to all of my fellow gunblogger attendees. The guns are always fun, but all of you are what make the NRA Convention worthwhile in my mind. Thank you for being yourselves, a truly great group of folks whose company I always enjoy.
Also, to anyone else I'm forgetting, thanks to you as well! I'm sure I forgot someone.

Cinco de...
Yeah, today is Cinco de Mayo, the day where college kids everywhere use a non-native holiday to drink shitty Mexican beers.
It's also a double birthday day in the W. clan. Happy Birthday Dad & Happy 88th Birthday Poppop! Maybe I'll take you out for a spin in the Mustang tonight. Yes, my 88 year old grandpa drives a V8 Mustang.

Pictures from Pittsburgh
Here are a couple. More real blogging to follow. I meant to blog last night but was dead tired and crashed early. I must be getting old.
At the Coonan booth with their .357 Mag 1911. More on that later. I have no clue what I was doing with my face...

Me and the pocket sized deathstare machine. Posted because I'm actually smiling for a posed picture. Who knows when that'll happen again.

My Gunnie Family
I missed my nephew's 3rd birthday party to hang out with a bunch of crazy gun-toting bloggers, that's how much I enjoy hanging out with all you crazy folks. Maybe I should sell all my guns and become an anti-gunner. It is "for the children" afterall, right?
They had guns at his party too, but they're the kind that are fun to shoot at people. Looking at the pictures reminds me of Super Soaker parties I had as a kid that turned into "everyone run around and shoot at Mike's Dad" events. Then, after he was good & wet we'd cover him in shaving cream. Good times, good times!

Gah
You know what's annoying as a blogger? When you want to write a post on a particular model gun you saw at the convention and then realize you didn't actually take a picture of said gun. Oh well. I guess I'll write it anyway and use a picture of one of my guns in a different caliber or just put up a stock photo. I must've had a brainfart at the Bersa booth.

The same thing we do every night, Pinky
Try to take over the world!....
Have you ever noticed just how many of your fellow gunbloggers are left-handed. Either there's something in the water, Lefties are smarter, or we're poised to try to take over the world with the help of two mice.

New Shooter!
My little Sis's best friend is in Arizona for college and just went shooting for the first time..... with an AK clone to boot! She had fun! Chew on that one anti's!
She lost her mom recently, so I'm glad to see she had fun, got her mind off of things and got in some much needed recoil therapy.

Small World
What are the chances of running into your boss / Partner at The Firm at Lidia's italian restaurant where the Breda / Old NFO* gunblogger shindig is being held? And yet there I am, finished my first Yeungling and chatting with William the Coroner, Laura, Chris & Old NFO and I see my boss walk up. Good thing I wasn't doing anything stupid or embarrasing or making off-color, inappropriate jokes.
It's times like these I really wish I'd been carrying the 1911. At least he'd know I have good taste, right?
*Thanks again Old NFO!

Poppin' that open carry cherry
Weer'dy, Jay G., Dennis, and Nancy popped their open carry cherries at the NRA convention this weekend and Alan OC'd for only his 2nd time.
I think Jay G. summed it up nicely in comments over at Alan's
"Y’know, before this weekend, I really didn’t *get* open carry..... That’s all changed.
It’s liberating..... It’s simply indescribable how open carry is synonymous with freedom."
Amen brother! Open carry is the very epitome of freedom. Freedom, it's a beautiful thing! I'm still annoyed at myself for not carrying.

Government Shutdown
If you had any doubts as to President Obama's lack of respect for the U.S. Military his recent OMB directive should tell you all you need to know. Here's the Obama Administration's OMB directive M11-13 (PDF warning) which freezes military pay. A previous OMB directive had been in use since the Reagan Administration said that military personnel were to be paid in the event of a government shutdown and even Bill Clinton made sure to broker a deal with Republicans so that the military would get paid.
Obama? Oh he's choosing to cut off military pay and use it as political fodder against those evil Republicans. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Obama can issue an Executive Order to make sure the military gets paid. Instead he's using this against the Republicans when this whole thing has always been on him.
What's worst about all of this? The liberal media will surely side with Obama and claim that the Republicans are holding military pay hostage. This shutdown is only supposed to impact "non-essential" funding. Given that military spending is one of the few Federal expenditures for which there is Constitutional authority I find it reprehensible that Obama would use military members as political pawns for his out of control spending. Reprehensible, but entirely unsurprising.

From Ohio no less. Thank you Breda & Mike. Mike, by the way, is even bigger in real life than he looks in pictures.

1911's Ooh Shiny!
Not that I don't love my DW RZ-45 Heritage, but this is the gun I wanted to buy but couldn't afford. The Dan Wesson Valor. Unfortunately they run about $1400+, which is roughly $300 above the already high price I paid for the RZ-45.
Still, it is one damn sexy gun.
Speaking of 1911's, I stopped by Tactical Solutions to fondle their .22lr 1911 conversions. They offer a full upper with options for standard, fiber optic or mounted holographic reflex sights. They seem to be much better quality than the .22 conversions from Sig. I'm seriously considering picking one up for the Dan Wesson for cheap practice with a full-sized, full-weight gun. Tac Sol also makes integrally suppressed pistols, which I didn't bother to photograph, since Delaware says we can't have NFA items.
