"Green" Jobs

Solyndra, the solar energy company Obama touted at the beginning of his green energy / green jobs push, has now declared bankruptcy.  They received $535 million in government money and were "the future" according to our President, yet they still went under.  And folks like my roommate wonder why I look at them in disbelief when they claim the government should "invest" in green energy companies.

Yes, more taxpayer funded "investment" in companies like this is exactly what the economy needs, right?

Quote of the day - cancer within

"The nature of the encroachment upon American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer; it eats faster and faster every hour. The revenue creates pensioners, and the pensioners urge for more revenue. The people grow less steady, spirited and virtuous, the seekers more numerous and more corrupt, and every day increases the circles of their dependents and expectants, until virtue, integrity, public spirit, simplicity and frugality become the objects of ridicule and scorn, and vanity, luxury, foppery, selfishness, meanness, and downright venality swallow up the whole of society."

John Adams - February 6, 1775

If only Adams could see how this has progressed today.  He would be mortified.  One only need look at the vitriol hurled at the Tea Party to see just how right Adams was.

"I don't think you understand. These boys killed my dog."

The worst part about this story and others like it is that the perps didn't catch a group of jacketed hollowpoints.  I don't think I have to tell any fellow dog owners that your dog is more than just a piece of property.

If you have a dog pay attention to his behavior and trust his instincts.  They will often recognize a threat before you do.

It's just "common sense"

To arrest people for "lack of common sense."

I'm not going to lie, going rafting down Main Street in Manayunk when it's totally flooded sounds like awesome fun!  My sister lives within walking distance (thankfully on higher ground)of Main Street and said the bottom half of the street was totally flooded 3/4 of the way up the parking meters.

This is exactly  the kind of behavior I'd expect from the Philadelphia police department.

On the other hand, if we start arresting people for lack of common sense then liberals......err I mean "progressives" are in trouble.

Irene claims two lives

My sister texted me yesterday to tell me that her friend Chris was missing and that she and a bunch of other folks were helping in the search efforts.  He and a friend had been drinking early that night at my buddy Joe's and had decided to go walking out near Hoopes resevoir in the storm.*  I found out earlier this morning via text that Chris and his friend both passed away, apparently drowning in a flash flood in Mill Creek.

*This is a dangerous place to walk on a sunny day while sober, much less drunk and in a Hurricane.

I remember Chris hanging out at the beach with us. he was a good kid.  My thoughts and prayers go out to both families and to the families of all those killed in this hurricane.

Quote of the day - the hand of government

"We still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute."

Thomas Paine - The Rights of Man (1791)

The nature of government, which Paine touches on above, hasn't changed much in 220 years.

And they called Bush an idiot!

Any man who refers to Franklin D. Roosevelt as a "fiscal conservative" should be mocked and ridiculed.  This is why I have such a hard time respecting the opinions of "enlightened" liberals. I have a hard time believing that even Obama, as dumb as he is, could be so ignorant of history that he believes FDR was a "fiscal conservative" who cut spending. FDR presided over what was then the largest expansion of the Federal government in U.S. History No, I don't think Obama is that ignorant.  I think he's doing what liberals do.  He's blatantly rewriting history to fit his own political agenda.  He's allowing his beliefs to trump historical reality.

I wonder, if Obama truly does think FDR was "fiscally conservative" then just what does he have in store for us in his quest to ruin America?

I know one thing for sure.  If Sarah Palin or anyone not on the Left had made such a moronic statement the leftist MSM would ridicule them to no end.

Overblown

Irene was totally overblown. I didn't even lose power at the apartment. In fact, I've had stronger winds during thunderstorms this month. Hurricane Floyd in 99' was far worse.

We did have some bad flooding in a low area about 5 miles from my apartment. I've never seen it like that there.

Everyone was pulled over taking pictures so I stopped and took a few. As usual not a word was said about the P229R on my hip.

Taken from the bridge. The homes & cars below were partially submerged.

Unpossible robbery!

There was an attempted robbery at the Burger King on Kirkwood Highway a few weeks ago.  The suspect had a gun, which we all know is unpossible!  That Burger King is right next to the Pizza Hut I couldn't carry in because there's an elementary school right there.

Y'know, it's almost like criminals don't care about the fact that there's a 1000 foot "Gun Free Zone" around K-12 schools.

Hurricane update

Hurricane Irene is here! No big deal right now but there have been reports of tornadoes nearby. I'm a little worried about the beach house.

Keep your powder dry & remember, carry your damn guns!

Stay Safe!

Rock You Like A Hurricane

Irene looks like it's gonna be a direct hit for us.  Cat. 2 and 100 mph winds projected when it hits Delaware Sunday morning and we're square in the "extreme" threat level for this storm.

I had planned to go to the beach this weekend but that obviously isn't going to happen.  In fact, as of yesterday they'd already closed the Indian River Inlet bridge so there's no way I'd be able to make it to the house if I wanted to.

I guess I should decide where I'm gonna hunker down.  I'm probably better prepped at the apartment than my parents are at their house.

Stay safe everyone!

Bad Touch

Stop touching it.  Seriously.  Bad Touch!

Open carry as a conversation starter

Open carry can be a conversation starter, but sometimes those conversations just leave you scratching your head.  I'm not sure what else to say about this exchange Dave had at the BP station just down the road from my apartment.

Meanwhile, in gun free paradise

An old women gets dragged out of bed by knife-wielding home invaders who stab her and her dog.*

This is the world the anti-gunners want for us.  A world in which it is preferable that the elderly are defenseless when they get attacked in their own homes rather than a world where Ms. McConnochie avoids harm by way of a gun, calls 911 and says "Help!  A man with a knife broke into my house and I shot him."

*god help the person dumb enough to attack my dog.

Quote of the day - Business regulation

“I know there are things the government has to do. But they need to find a way to do them without people like me having to bump into a new regulation every time we turn a corner.... Government should act like my assistant, not my boss.”
- Small business owner referred to in this article.

RTWT!

Sadly I doubt government will ever act like an "assistant" to business owners.  Government is force and they damn well think they are boss, especially if they think you make too much money.

Interesting carry method

A review of The Versa Carry.  I've never seen anything quite like this before.  Very minimalistic.  I will say I really don't like the idea of stuffing a loaded gun down my pants with the trigger guard exposed.

Also, the barrel rod seems to be affixed to the rest of the "holster" by means of one screw.  Eeek.

If a Tea Party group had done this

A union organizer keys a derogatory term into the car of John King, a rival, non-union employer in Ohio.  He is confronted by the homeowner and responds by pulling a gun and shooting the homeowner in the arm.

As the article states, King owns the largest non-union electrical contracting company in the area and local unions have been unsuccessful in getting his employees to unionize. Clearly the unions are trying to strongarm and intimidate the lone major holdout.  Since they've been unable to get what they want through the legal process they're engaging in liberal mob violence.  Repeatedly vandalizing his shop, he and his employees cars, as well as stalking and death threats.

The whole point of union membership is so that you can bargain collectively under the idea that a group with mutual goals can have more influence than one individual, thus benefitting the group as a whole.  I have no issue with the concept of unions.  In fact, I think this is logical and makes sense.

What I do have issue with are the strongarmed mob tactics often employed by modern unions.  This starts at the beginning with mandatory union membership.  Freedom of association includes the freedom to choose not to join, but unions learned that compulsory membership would grow their ranks, individual choice be damned.  Besides, they're liberals, so compulsion and lack of individual choice are a feature, not a bug.  Having previously worked at a union job I've seen this first hand.  I had to join both the store union AND the meatworkers union when I started my job, yet they did little to nothing for me other than exact dues from every paycheck I earned.

So we have a pro-union organizer destroying private property parked in a man's driveway and then shooting the man when he went outside to investigate.  Where's the outrage?  Where's the media calling the Left "terrorists" or "extremists?"

How much do you want to bet union thugs wouldn't try that kind of shit in Texas?

How much do you want to bet the media would be screaming bloody murder if this had been a Tea Party supporter shooting a liberal union leader?

I mean hell, a Judge had to instruct striking union IBEW workers not to throw feces during their strike.  I am not shitting you.  That is the level of civility we see from the left, yet do you hear about it in the MSM?  No.  crickets.

How you know your sister is a nerd

She owns t-shirts from here.  I don't understand most of them.

Quote of the day - Doom

"Nothing says "Let's tour America and talk about jobs!" than a big, black, hearsemobile of doom."

-Dana Loesch (via Twitter)

Yep, especially a tax-payer funded campaign bus that costs $1.1 million and is made in Canada.  I mean it's ultimately a non-issue, but it is politically stupid.

Quote of the day - morals

"Even if the laws were changed tomorrow that all guns were illegal, I would not be morally a criminal for continuing to carry. You may demand I lay down my arms because you lack the conviction and the compassion necessary to defend your life and the lives of your loved ones and thus desire to bring all men down to your level and I will say “No”."

-Robb Allen

This goes to the heart of something that so many fail to understand.  All laws represent a choice.  "We the people" can be defiant in the face of unjust laws.  We can even refuse to enforce such laws (see jury nullification)  At the end of the day I can choose to abide by the law or break it.  Legislate away my right to self-defense and I may become a criminal, but morally speaking I am still in the right.

The rights of those in Baltimore, DC, or Chicago are currently infringed upon, but morally they are no more a criminal for carrying illegally than I am for carrying here in Delaware legally.  They are breaking an unconstitutional, immoral, malum prohibitum law, the violation of which imparts no tangible harm upon any one individual.

The right to self-defense is a natural right of men.  One is never wrong to defend and retain such a right, regardless of statutory language to the contrary.  It is not a right which may be stripped from me by legislative fiat.  As one of our second President's described it, self-defense is an indisputable right of nature not surrendered to society by individuals.

A new level of anti-gun stupidity.

Newark, NJ held a gun buyback........for toy guns.  Nope, this isn't a joke.

"Several dozen children clutching water pistols and cap guns were lined up to exchange their fake weapons for books and non-violent toys."

Somehow having little Timmah trade in his cap gun or super soaker is supposed to combat gun violence and violent crime?!  Well I guess we should be happy that a non-profit ran this one, although I could see The State of New Jersey deciding to waste its time and taxpayer money on something this moronic.

When did super soakers, water pistols, and cap guns become "violent toys?"

Question of the day

What caliber for ROUS's?  Those nasty buggers scare the crap outta me!

Quote of the day - "Borrowing"

"Copying and pasting an entire 10-paragraph post is “borrowing” content like that guy in the ski mask with a 9mm is “borrowing” your car, or like the kid sitting next to you in math class was “borrowing” your answers."

- Tam -commenting at PDB's

Look, you can defend it all you want, but in the end copy & pasting someone's entire blogpost without their permission is stealing, regardless of whether you say "Hey, I got it from here."  Quoting part of a post, commenting on it and linking back is one thing.  Ganking the whole damn post for your own gain is quite another.

Of course if you could write like Tam then you wouldn't need to steal other people's posts, now would you?

Linking, Whining, and a note on blogging

Ok, so I am apparently a little late to this whole kerfuffle, but I'll throw in my worthless two cents anyway since this is my soapbox.

A certain blogger is apparently unhappy and whining about being "blacklisted" by pro-gun bloggers.  He refuses to provide proof of said "blacklist" and for my part this is the 1st I've heard of any such thing.  I have my doubts that any such list exists.

Let me state that I do not regularly read TTAG and that some of what I have read I vehemently disagree with.  Mostly though, they're just not on my radar as a regular read.  That said, as someone who has had folks lift entire posts and pictures from my blog and post them on theirs I tend to have a low opinion of those who do it.  I expect anti-gun bloggers to do it, given their character.  It is not the kind of behavior I expect from those who are on my side.  TTAG has done so repeatedly to fellow bloggers.  That's an asshole move and I'm not going to sit here and defend assholes.

For the sake of this post let's assume that TTAG IS being blacklisted by what I'd assume is at most a handful of pro-gun bloggers.  So what?  So a handful of gunnies have decided they don't like you, think you're an ass, or just plain don't find your blog interesting and thus don't link to it.  Who cares?  Man up and don't get your panties in a bunch about it.

If I were in his place my attitude would be as follows.  Some bloggers don't like what I say here, or don't like me because I have CP, or because I like big butts and they don't, big whoop.  The reason is irrelevant, as is the fact that they won't link to me.

The long and short of it is this.  People don't have to link to you, especially if they don't like what you have to say.  People most certainly don't have to link to vile, bigoted, attention whoring anti-gun bloggers.  I understand TTAG feels differently, but I will not provide them a forum here and I absolutely will not link to those who "out" other bloggers.  Furthermore, TTAG's contention that refusing to link is a 1st Amendment issue is bullshit.  I'm not even going to bother to explain why, as I assume my readers are intelligent enough to understand.

I don't get linked that often here at Another Gun Blog, and that's fine. Sure, I appreciate links, but I blog for me.  If someone decides they're not going to read me that is their loss, not mine.  I'm certainly not going to bitch and moan about it and claim there's some vast "blacklisting" conspiracy against me. (while refusing to provide evidence of such)  If I did that I'd sound like a whiny bitch.

*You'll note that I chose not to link to TTAG.  I did that not because I've "blacklisted" him, but because he whined about being blacklisted and then refused to back up that claim.

Craft Breweries

I love craft breweries.  I especially love craft breweries with a sense of humor.  Here's what I saw when I went to Magichat Brewing Co.'s website.

"Your browser, Internet Explorer 6, is old and feeble. We had to create this primitive, low-fat, no-salt version, just so your crappy browser wouldn't freak out. Download one of these newer, faster, more secure browsers and see what you are missing. If you cannot upgrade your browser, call your system administrator and complain."

I laughed out loud.

I haven't had a beer all week.  Maybe I should pick up some #9.

"Just a goddamn piece of paper!"

This Realclearpolitics article says "Liberals are stumped by the Constitution" with regards to the Constitutional violations contained in Obamacare.

That's not it at all in my opinion.  Are Liberals generally ignorant of Constitutional Law?  Yes, but that's not the problem.  The problem is that they just don't care about the Constitution.  They don't respect it. (this applies to plenty of "conservatives" as well by the way.  See GWB)

I had a discussion regarding Obamacare some time ago with my Liberal roommate (who fancies himself a "moderate") his ultimate retort towards the end of our discussion was that if something is "the right thing to do for the health and progress of the nation, it should be done even if it violates Constitutional Law."  His contention was that we should not let the Constitution or Constitutional rights impede social progress.

It always irks me that the same people who think that "passing another law" will magically stop violent crime, or creating a "gun-free zone" will keep people with malicious intent out see no contradiction when they claim that the supreme law of the land should be violated in the name of "social progress."  If you have no issue with politicians breaking the law to get what you want what makes you think the average street criminal will respect the new laws you want to foist upon society?

If the Constitution is to be ignored whenever a politician or a majority of Americans feel something is "the right thing to do"  then the Constitution is a worthless relic and you and I have no true rights.  The truly scary thing is how prevalent his viewpoint is among ordinary Americans.

Folks going to the Northcoast shoot.

Is anyone who's going to the Northcoast shoot in two weeks interested in some 5.45 x 39 ammo?  I've got 300 rounds of this surplus stuff plus a couple Bakelite AK74 mags and a green surplus mag pouch.

If you'll be there and you want it make me an offer.

Perspective on London riots

Go read this post from an ambulance medic in the UK.  It succinctly describes the problem with the UK right now, all boiled down to one core concept, and I quote,

"What's mine is mine, and what's yours is also mine. "

It's the looter mentality.

Some of you might think "we don't have that kind of mentality in the U.S." or that we aren't a welfare state.  Oh yeah?  Think again.  the looter mentailty is alive and well in this country, fostered by liberal ideology.

H/T to Kevin for the video.

The One True Hope!

It has been discovered! The one true hope for the U.S. economy is..... a space alien invasion says Paul Krugman! Paul, Step away from the LSD tablets!

Thank god for Paul Krugman. Idiots like him are great for a laugh, though idiots like him should have no political or economic influence whatsoever. Krugman and Obama. There couldn't be better proof that the Nobel Prize has become a total joke.

Zakaria and Krugman seem to be of the opinion that paying people (with taxpayer money) to dig ditches and then fill them back up is "productive work"

I think Krugman is looking at this the wrong way. An alien invasion will help the economy, but not for the reasons he thinks. An impending alien invasion will be a boon for the gun and ammunition industry, which will create jobs.

Cringing in anticipation - ADE

We've all seen those "world's dumbest ____ " videos where you're just waiting, knowing there's going to be unbelievable dumbassery resulting in a faceplant or some horrific injury.

I got that kind of feeling as I watched this "safety video" of training put on by supposed "gun school" American Defense Enterprises.  Several times throughout the video I said out loud "holy shit!  Someone's gonna get shot!"

Teacup grips, ridiculous ninja moves, people getting muzzled left and right, live rounds going over the heads of other shooters.  The little exercise they started at the 1:13 mark had me convinced someone was going to get shot, and it got worse from there.  You couldn't make a better "What not to do" video if you tried.

PDB has a great play-by-play rundown, complete with screenshots.  It also appears ADE took down there vidoes.  Now if only further scrutiny would take down not only their vidoes but their business.

Truth in London

You are on your own.  The police can't and won't protect you.  Individuals and their communities must take action to keep themselves safe.  When shit goes bad and there's rioting in the streets the police won't save you nor protect your homes and businesses.  That is a simple truth.

"We have to do things for ourselves," said Huseyin. "We have to look after each other. If they come here tonight there will be a fight, a big fight."

UK subjects are just now realizing this, after a decades long erosion of individual rights and personal sovereignty and the growth of a coddling nanny-state.  Too bad they've already given up their rights and their arms for the illusion "public safety."  Oops.

I'd hate to repeat myself

When it comes to the anti's being proven wrong I have no problem repeating myself.  Sometimes it's "Shall-Issue" in Michigan not producing the problems the anti-gunners swore it would. This time it's another in a long line of states that allow CCW in places that serve alcohol concluding that, hey, this is a total non-issue!  Imagine that!

The anti's went on and on about how dangerous allowing CCW in bars / restaurants would be and they were again proven wrong.  Just like in Tennessee, a year later Virginia has had no problems with the increased level of individual freedom.  In fact, crimes involving firearms in places that serve alcohol actually decreased 5.2%.  Inconceivable!

Captain America

I saw it on Friday with my dad, brother and nephew.  The plot was a little lacking, but then that was to be expected.  All in all I found it entertaining.

One thing really irked me though.  Captain America fought some mythical, cartoonish group called HYDRA?!  I think I saw one swastika in the entire film.  I was expecting Captain America to do some Nazi-bashing.....and yet I saw no actual Nazi's.  Ah hollywood, always politically correct, unless they're trying to bash the Tea Party.

Quote of the day - Unconstitutional

"What Congress cannot do under the Commerce Clause is mandate that individuals enter into contracts with private insurance companies for the purchase of an expensive product from the time they are born until the time they die."

-11th Circuit Court of Appeals

Should this end up going to the SCOTUS, which I believe it will, it'll be quite interesting.  I suspect the Conservative members of the Court will find it unconstitutional, the liberals will find some inane, convoluted reasoning for why it's permissible, and Justice Kennedy will be the swing vote.

I can't think of anytime in U.S. history where Americans were required by law to purchase a product on the private market based on no condition other than the fact that they reside in the U.S.  The natural question, should this be ruled Constitutional, is, "what other products can the government compel me, under penalty of law, to buy on the private market?"

Quote of the day - spawning tyrants

“Tyrants are but the spawn of ignorance, begotten by the slaves they trample on.”

- William Lloyd Garrison

Look at most major U.S. cities to see this.  Many are controlled politically by the liberal elite and have been for decades.   The policies they put in place do not help the people, pull them out of poverty, keep them safe, educate them, or respect their Constitutional rights, yet those same people keep voting the same bums into power and expecting different results.

Violence

No guns necessary.  Nope, these "misguided youths" were just playing an innocent "knock out game" whereby they killed a man and seriously injured his wife.  If we just institute stricter gun control we'll get rid of such wanton violence, right?

Things like this are why it irks me so much to hear anyone claim we have a gun problem.  No, we have a violence problem.  Actually, it's not even "we."  The black community by and large has a cultural problem with predatory violence.

I've been called a "racist" more times than I can remember for stating the above, but it is nonetheless true.  Facts and violent crime data don't lie.  Hell, in Delaware the homicide rate from 99-07 among black males was nearly 8 times higher than it was among white males.  Homicide by firearm was nearly 12 times higher. (See CDC WISQARS)

The relative silence of the MSM in regards to these attacks is deafening.  If you had mostly white mobs attacking racial minorities, laughing and saying "black girl bleeds a lot" it would be on World News Tonight and everyone would want to discuss race relations.  When the roles are reversed we get silence, even though there's a clear racial aspect to many of the attacks.

7.62 X 54R

Nothing says "get off my lawn" like a Soviet Era Mosin capable of blowing big, nasty holes in criminals.  Of course you'd think the big Gasden Flag out front would be a huge "You picked the wrong damn house!" sign.

A man in Kansas City, Missouri thwarted a mob of teenagers who descended upon his home.  Once again we're seeing mobs of "youths" attacking white residents.  Now, this article didn't state the race of the offenders, but I'd be willing to take a guess that, in line with most of these mob attacks, they weren't the same pigment as Mr. Macbride.  (not that race really matters here, but the media would scream bloody murder if white youths were terrorizing innocent blacks.  It would be headline news)

I can't even imagine having your kid come off the porch to tell you there's a group of 40+ people marching down the street, screaming, yelling and headed for your house.

The sad state of the UK

With violence, riots and looting all over England, the UK's productive class are reduced to defending themselves and their property by employing human barracades, makeshift weapons, and tools.  Here in America, where people have rights and guns, we do things differently.

My dad was living in the city of Wilmington during the 1960's race riots.  He told me that those shops that didn't get looted were the ones where owners stood guard out front and on rooftops with rifles and pistols.  The UK's non-parasitic class doesn't have that choice.  They have chosen to deny themselves the right to self-defense, thinking it would create a "civilized society."  As Ayn Rand often noted, it created quite the opposite.  We are seeing the reality of that right now.

Ultimately, UK subjects did this to themselves.  Liberalism and their burgeoning Welfare State cracked, as all such "progressive" societies ultimately do.  As Margaret Thatcher warned back in 1976 at some point you run out of other people's money.  At some point there are enough parasites that they start to kill the host.  When the government realizes they must take measures to scale back the parasitic behavior to avoid collapse some of the parasites lash out in violence.

UK subjects have relinquished their right to self-defense and defense of property as well as their right to own the tools necessary for that defense.  Now business owners are dismayed and reality is biting them in the ass as they watch their businesses be destroyed by thugs. The police, the very people they trusted for protection stand by and watch it all burn.  Cops in L.A. did the same thing in 1992, but armed shopowners came together and defended their communities.  In the aftermath people woke up and started buying guns, realizing the police wouldn't or couldn't protect them.  Those in the UK have no such option. I wonder if they even have the individualistic, self-reliant mindset to take that option if it were avaliable to them? The community is at the mercy of the mobs and entirely dependent upon the State for protection.  The State, predictably, has failed them.

I wish that these tragic events would make UK subjects wake up and realize that they are responsible for their own safety, but I fear that ship has sailed.  Once you have relinquished your rights, once you've given up your guns, the government won't give them back.  No, the events all over the UK will be used as a reason for even more government control and less individual liberty.

Update - Oh lookie!  I wrote this yesterday.  Now today Roberta points out that I was right in my prediction above.  The UK government is already looking at cracking down on individual liberties by restricting access to social media.  They're also instituting a ban on masks, which no doubt will work as well as their ban on guns and knives.

Quote of the day - morals & rights

"Contrary to what the state would have you believe, you have the right to defend yourself and your property that morally supersede any law that would deny that right."

Perry DeHavilland - "Defend Yourself And Be A Vigilante."

If defending onesself and ones property means violating the law then so be it.  The State can tell people they have no right to self-defense and no right to defend their homes and businesses from the mob, and the people can ignore law and defend themselves anyway.  In fact, that's precisely what many Brits have done.  It's exactly what they should do.  Such laws are illegitimate, and when shit hits the fan people will pick up tools and engage in protective violence.  Such action is both natural and rational.

Update - See Joe Huffman's post as an example of this.

Bird Beak

This is, quite possibly, the stupidest and most pathetic rape prevention self-defense instruction I've ever seen.

Put your hands in an awkward, unnatural position and try to "peck" the rapists eyes out?  Moronic, but then these are liberal feminists in San Fran.  They don't exactly live in reality.

I know modern feminists hate to admit the truth, but generally speaking, women are at a huge physical disadvantage in hand-to-hand combat with a man.  The idea that a 100 pound woman is going to be able to fight off a determined 150-200 pound man with her bare hands is wishful thinking.  It's the equivalent of my thinking I could fight off an attacker my roommates size if he wanted to kill me.  My brother outweighs me by about 40-50 pounds and even now he can easily pin me down and keep me there.  Why?  Superior physical strength and a major weight advantage.

Listening to advice like this makes me angry because gullible women will see this and think it is actually a viable defense against a rapist when what it really is is feel good bullshit.  A gun levels the playing field and allows women the means to stop predators who are otherwise physically superior.  No other personal tool does that as effectively as a firearm.  Carry your damn guns ladies!

Just out of curiosity, have any of my readers taken one of those "Rape Aggression Defense" classes they offer on college campuses?  Are they as ridiculous and useless as the techniques in the video?

What good are family...

....If you can't make fun of them from time to time.

My sis is one odd duck.  Yes, she and her friends had an "old person party," yes, they went to Wawa dressed like that, and yes, that is my old walker.  I'm not posting the most embarrassing one.  This IS my sister afterall.

You wouldn't know it from all of the ridiculous faces she makes in pictures, but she's the smart one in the family.  I mean there's no way in hell I was going to be an engineering major and math minor with a 3.9 GPA.

Quote of the day

Too many on the left seem to think that keeping what you earn yourself is "greed", but stealing something that you didn't earn, is "charity".

- Seen on Facebook.

All one has to do to see this in action is to look at the entitlement mentality in this country or in most of Europe.  Hell, just look at what's happening in London.   It's a necessary belief of anyone who supports a massive welfare state.  It is the creed of looters.

London Riots

Here's a small photo album from the rioting in the UK, taken by an old buddy of mine who lives there now.  I was glad to hear he made it back to his apartment ok yesterday amidst the chaos.

No! Not the trouser monkey!

In the slightly modified words of Jules Winnfield,

"Holster, motherfucker, do you have one?"

I was watching Pulp Fiction on Sunday night and watched Jules & Vincent shove pistols down the front of their shorts at the end of the movie and couldn't help but think of this news story Brigid e-mailed to me.

I'm a huge fan of folks carrying in good holsters, be it one from Dennis, Michael, Comp-Tac or some other quality holster manufacturer.  That said, if some dumbass wants to shove a Glock or (insert pistol here) in his crotch and blow a hole in his trouser monkey that's his choice.  It sure solves the problem of someone that stupid spawning a bunch of little idiots.

Hell, maybe he can be a spokesman for the Brady Campaign once they're done with Plaxico.

Quote of the day - Character

"Character develops itself in the stream of life."

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Something a little different this morning for today's QOTD.

Your Stimulus Dollars

Being used to buy racist, Liberal indoctrination manuals to indoctrinate those who will teach your children.

If my employer tried to push this kind of blatantly racist crap on me I'd respectfully throw it in the trash, or maybe burn it.

"Only those educators who acknowledge the existence of white privilege in America, that “white” is a culture in America and that race “is a definer for social and economic status” can reach proficiency, the authors contend."

As for the School Board President stating, "The book is intended to open a dialogue" I call BS. I'm still waiting to see evidence of Liberals who are truly interested in "open dialogue."

If my forays into this kind of BS politically correct liberal indoctrination are any indication there will NOT be "open dialogue." Oh sure, there's open dialogue, as long as you don't stray from the assumptions put forth in the diversity / cultural sensitivity training. Try to challenge those blatantly leftist assumptions within the group and you will be silenced for daring to think outside the box and for holding up the indoctrination lesson. Again, I'm just describing the mandatory "diversity workshops" I had to attend in my college dorms.

"The purpose of providing this resource is to help staff see that people come from a multitude of different backgrounds which cause them to respond differently to the same set of facts, depending on their personal perspectives."

The above is indicative of the bigger problem. When people think that it is acceptable to respond differently to, or simply eschew altogether, a set of facts because they conflict with that persons personal preferences it is almost impossible to have a rational discussion. When schools are teaching "cultural sensitivity" and ensuring that it pervades the teaching system, infecting the teaching of true academics and accurate history, is it any wonder we turn out such blatantly ignorant students?

I see it with my liberal roommate all the time. He chastizes me for my over reliance on facts and rationality as if it is somehow it is a bad thing to rely on such concepts rather than what he calls the "moral / emotional aspect." My personal morals and emotions are virtually worthless in a public policy discussion, unless my goal is to enforce my morals against others. My emotions and morals simply do not change the facts, nor do they change the logical conclusions to be gleaned from those facts. A position which is tied only to my emotions and not grounded by rational, factual thought might be fine for a discussion of religion, but it has no credibility whatosever from a policy standpoint.

Monday Morning Musings

I'm not quite sure when, but something odd has started happening to me recently.  Kids are calling me "Sir."  It used to be if some pimply faced teenager served me while I was out getting food I was "dude," "bud" or "man" but now I'm "Sir" 99% of the time.  Either I'm getting old or today's teens are getting more polite (ha)

Carry your gun!

People sometimes wonder why I carry when visiting my sister in Philly.  Philly is not safe, especially when you add attacks like this into the mix.  These mob attacks are becoming more and more prevalent in the city, proving once again that people and culture are the problem, not guns.

Imagine you're just walking along on a sunny Saturday afternoon and a group of teens walking by you decide, for no apparent reason, to start happily beating the shit out of you.  Why?  Because they can and it's fun.

One of this man's attackers even had the gall to say to him "It's not our fault you don't know how to fight!"    Do you think he'd be saying that if he or one of his buddies had just taken a round to the chest?  I doubt it.

When a group of 20-40 young people, some as young as 11, are beating middle aged white guys unconscious just for kicks you have a serious violence problem that no amount of gun control will solve.  These victims got off lucky.  18 year old Carter Strange was nearly killed during a beating by a group of "ethnic" youths ranging in age from 13 to 19.

By the way folks, carry more ammo.  You've already gone through the hassle of strapping on a gun, so it's really not that much of a burden to throw an extra mag or two in your pocket before heading out.  I usually carry one spare mag if I'm carrying a double stack pistol or two spares if it's a single stack.  Maybe I should up that by one.

"A big nothing"

Michigan passes "Shall-Issue"  CCW in 2001 and 10 years later the verdict is, "A big nothing."  Those were the words of Robert Schaefer, President of Michigan's prosecutors' association.

Anti gunners scream about shootouts, blood in the streets, more accidental shootings, more violent crime, all manner of fearmongering and yet every single time we pass a pro-gun / pro-rights law reality proves them wrong.

Did you know? - Stupid gun laws edition

Now, you wouldn't think it'd be a violation of Delaware's CCDW laws to conceal a pistol in your own home or place of residence.  I mean hell, the State couldn't possibly reach into your home and tell you in what manner you may carry legally owned private property, right?

Wrong.

Nothing in the Delaware CCDW statute allows for any "private property" exception and the only case law I've been able to find says this.

"That the weapon was carried only in defendant's house held no defense. ‐ It was no defense to a prosecution for carrying a concealed deadly weapon that defendant only carried the weapon in the defendant's house. "

- State v. Gagliota, 32 Del. 360, 123 A. 183 (1923).

Even Maryland has an exemption for CCW of handguns at home, so Delaware is worse than Maryland. Eek!  Now, this is one of those things I doubt you would EVER be charged with, but it's still illegal, which is just plain stupid.

Quote of the day - unhinged leftists

"The tea party Republicans have engaged in economic terrorism against the United States -- threatening to blow up the economy if they don't get what they want. And like the al-Qaida bombers, what they want is delusional: the dream of restoring some fantasy caliphate in which no one pays taxes, while the country is magically protected from foreign attack and the elderly get government-paid hip replacements."

- Froma Harrop
One thing we consistently see with the left is this.  When they see a threat to their power and "progress" and they can't get what they want they simply throw tantrums and go apeshit.  Think my characterization is unfair?  Just look at how the liberal MSM has been acting in the wake of the debt ceiling crisis.

We engaged in the Democratic process the way a Representative Democracy does.  The Liberals didn't get everything they wanted (nor did the Tea Party) and now they're lashing out like petulant little children.

Of course Harrop also dishonestly claims that "The People Want Higher Taxes."  No, they most certainly do not.  Even according to her article and the polling she cites what they want to foist higher taxes upon "those other guys" (I.E. "the rich.")  Wanting to inflict higher taxes upon others is not the same as "the people want higher taxes."   What it is, however, is classic class warfare.  As we have seen throughout history those tax hikes will not increase revenue, particularly in an economic recession.

Babes With Bullets

The women of Babes with Bullets are educating women and fighting the good fight from within Mordor Illinois.  Winning over the female demographic is imperative to the future of the 2nd Amendment and the shooting sports.  We are winning.  This is why.

For you .45ACP fans...

I have a quick question.  How many of you use 185 grain .45ACP for either range or defensive use?  Surely I'm not the only one turning his back on JMB.

Quote of the day - Cougar

"I agree with the "Yell. Throw rocks. Fight back" theory of lion protection, My rocks, however, are relatively small and go really really fast."

- Michael Bane

It's always irked me that gun laws so often disarm us in situations where people are out in nature and vulnerable.  Not just vulnerable, but in a situation where the men with guns are going to have a hell of a time getting to you if you need them.

I went and walked the dogs with a family friend recently.  It was dusk and we were in a State Park, which meant I couldn't carry even though there have been cougar sightings not too far away.*  Hell, Fair Hill in Maryland has a sign warning of cougars and illustrating what to do if you encounter one.  Sadly it does not depict shooting the predator in the head, which you couldn't do anyway since you can't carry in Maryland.

*Not that I expect to get attacked by a cougar. Your chances of being attacked by violent 2-legged predators in the park are quite a bit higher.

Then again, being pursued by a cougar might not be a bad thing, but I'm 25 so what do I know ;)

Today is International IPA Day, so make sure you imbibe in your favorite India Pale Ale.

Not Bacon

Bacon is bacon. Bacon in a tube is not bacon!  Are we Americans really too damn lazy to cook our own bacon or hire someone to cook it for us?  Filling your house or apartment with the delectable smell of bacon frying is part of what makes it so awesome.

Damn, now I want some bacon, but I already had two slices today.

H/T Nerdalicious

Safe places

We are always told that certain places are "safe places" and are hammered with the inane question, "why would anyone need to carry a gun in insert place here?"

The reality is that there are no safe places.  A man tried to rob two women on the sidewalk in front of a police station.  The man threatened to kill them but was unarmed.  If he hadn't been bluffing and had decided to make good on his threat the police sitting inside a few yards away wouldn't have stopped him.

You are on your own.  You and you alone are responsible for your own safety.  When the shit hits the fan make sure the person with a gun & capable of stopping the poo is you. Remember, there are no safe places.

Stimulating education

Kevin links to a truly disheartening article referencing a government study  which found that over 14% of U.S. adults are illiterate.  I wish I could say I'm surprised, but then I remember that Detroit Michigan has a 47% literacy rate despite spending significantly more per pupil than the national average.

"about one in seven — are saddled with such low literacy skills that it would be tough for them to read anything more challenging than a children's picture book or to understand a medication's side effects listed on a pill bottle".

So we have spent nearly $100 Billion under Obama's stimulus for the Dept. of Education even though one in seven American adults cannot read and yet nothing the Dept. of Education has done in the past 31 years has increased nationwide literacy rates.

Given that basic literacy is the most obvious and simple indicator of whether a person is "educated" why are we throwing money at the Dept. of Education if they are demonstratively failing their most basic mission?  If evidence shows we are getting no return on our "investment" then why continue to fund the Department of Education?

Quote of the Day - Newbies

"Taking a new shooter out is one of the best things we as gunnies can do..... When some anti tells them guns are evil and only meant to kill, they will know better. I think if we all commit to taking just one new person shooting a year and making it a fun experience, it will be the best insurance we could have in protecting our Second Amendment freedoms."

- John Richardson

John couldn't be more right.  I'm not going to come out and say that bringing someone to the range is going to turn them into a full blown 2A activist, but it sure as hell will tear down some of their fears and preconceived notions about guns that they've learned from the anti-gun liberal media.  It's even more effective if you're bringing kids, since they're more likely to have an open mind and less likely to have been totally indoctrinated into the "guns are bad" culture.

the little econobox that could

Tam has a post up about CAFE standards and econoboxes.  CAFE standards are moronic for reasons far more numerous and complex than I'm willing to get into here.  As for fun, fuel efficient econoboxes, give me a Mazda 323GTX and I'll be happy.

As for increasing mileage standards, the 2nd comment to tam's post pretty much sums up my thoughts.  I mean, if for $25K a car company could make me a 700 horsepower Toyota Supra Hardtop that retains the bulletproof drivetrain and the ability to run around a road course like a bat out of hell and gets 50MPG I'd buy it in a heartbeat.  There's a reason no such thing exists, and no amount of wishing it into existence will make it so.

Civil Discourse

So a bunch of liberal politicians and liberal pundits are talking about how the Tea Party are "Terrorists." Even Joe Biden got in on the act. Great!  First it was "extremist" then "racist" now "Terrorist."  This is what the left does.  They know they have nothing to counter the message of the Tea Party folks, so they define their own terms by which to attack and smear.  Once one pejorative has been overplayed and lost its punch they simply invent another.  Why, it's easy to do when definitions have no relevance in your world.

Think about it for a second.  The left are deriding Tea Partier's as "Terrorists" and accusing them of wanting to blow up the country and economy when all that was accomplished was a raising of the debt ceiling and virtually worthless spending cuts.  These "cuts" represent a slight decrease in the rate of spending increase.  This "compromise" doesn't even begin to lessen the scope of the problem or stop the spending orgy, much less actually do anything to pay down the debt.

Sarah Palin had this to say, and I have to say she's spot on given my experiences with Liberals.  Remember that these are the same Liberals who wanted those they disagree with to "tone down the rhetoric" earlier this year.

"I think we're getting kind of used to being called names - racists, inciters of violence, being accused of things we have nothing to do with. ... I suppose it's a bit more appalling to have been called acting like terrorists by he who is second in command of the most powerful office in the world. It's quite appalling. It proves how out of touch this White House is."

Republicans, even Tea Party Republicans are really just moderates.  They're preferable to liberals or to Establishment Republicans, but what we need are true libertarian solutions and a huge slashing of the power and scope of the Federal government.  I have no illusions about that actually happening.

This bill changes nothing except for political posturing.  We're still headed full steam towards insolvency that can't be solved by tax increases.  This bill wasn't a "solution."  It was no more than a bandaid on a gaping chest wound.

I was going to blog

I had planned to do some actual blogging today but as they say "Shit happens." I'm currently stuck at my parents house with no car, no clothes* and I'm typing this on a laptop purchased in 2002 that's got a Pentium 4 processor and 448MB of ram.

I just hope the Mazda and whatever is in it (including a bag full of ammo) is still there come morning so I can get it towed.

I had a wedding to attend in MD over the weekend, which is why there was no blogging. It was a beautiful ceremony out on the Chesapeake. I still can't believe my college roommate is married to the girl he was dating back when I was a teenager. That's just flat out awesome.

*seriously. The only pair of underwear I have are the ones I was wearing and had to throw in the wash.

Slashing

Slashing. Good for debt, not so good for booty.  Carry your guns ladies! Remember, always protect the booty!  Arrrrrr!

U.S. healthcare changing lives

Remember this story of the little girl with dreams of dance who had neurosurgery in the U.S. to alleviate her spastic diplegia?

Well there's another 5 year old boy in Britain with cerebral palsy who is coming to the U.S. and paying out of pocket for surgery so that he can walk.   The operation is of course not avaliable under Britain's socialized NHS system despite the fact that it has been performed in the U.S. for the past 23 years.   Families of kids with CP in the UK are trying to change that, though it's going to be an uphill battle.

Despite all the people trying to destroy it I still love this country!
